Paul Thurrott has done a nice overview and preview of Microsoft Office 11 on his site.

He discusses what will be new in Office 11, and the four major design goals for Office 11, which are :- Security, reliability, mobility, and ease of use.

An overview of XML, Office 11 and SmartDocs follows, with most of the Office 11 applications having XML enhancements added to each.

Microsoft Outlook 11 appears to be the most significantly improved product in the suite. New column views for most aspects of Outlook. Outlook 11 won't display HTML content by default any more. One annoying feature is that Microsoft has significantly changed the menu structure in Outlook 11, some keystrokes that worked in 2000/XP now don't work in Outlook 11.

Microsoft Word 11 appears to be less updated in this release, with some new Reading Layout view, and the ability to mark a portion of a document read-only.

Microsoft Excel 11 appears less updated than Word 11, with some additional controls of smart-tags in cells added.

Microsoft PowerPoint 11 now has the ability to be more flexible for distributing presentations, with a distributable viewer application, a Package to CD feature, and now has integration with Windows Media Player, allowing for full screen video playback or streaming audio or video.

Microsoft Access 11 has the usual XML updates, now has autocorrect and a nice new database backup feature.

Microsoft FrontPage 11 has quite a few updates, with a new text editor, supports HTML/CSS/.ASP and the usual scripting languages and with a new split pane view for WYSIWYG code design. Support for multiple testing of browsers is now included, as well as the production of clean HTML from the design view.

Microsoft Publisher 11 has numerous updates, which includes many web site creation-related improvements, and the ability to have multiple master pages.

Microsoft OneNote 11, codenamed "Scribbler", is the "new" appliation in the office suite. At its simplest level, OneNote is a note-taking application. OneNote was designed to accommodate any style or note taking. "You can take notes via typing, handwriting, drawing, or even audio and OneNote links it all together."

One final new application is Microsoft Picture Library application, offers an interesting array of imaging-related functionality, including resizing, cropping, red-eye removal, rotating etc...

How come whenever i post news to the back page news it gets posted but i never get any credit?! Oh well thats life i guess. I hate the new office 11 interface, Office XP was the nicest, i was praying it would be in Windows XP for all the menus, etc. but sadly it wasnt, i wish microsoft would keep things constistant through there applications. There are 3 different types of menus in Windows XP, the normal explorer menus, Office XP menus and the MMC menus (the MMC are pretty nice also). I am praying the final version of Office 11 wont look like the previews, however my prayers dont seem to be answered when it comes to applications

I like the idea of the UI changing with the Windows VS, but they should stay consistent with the rest of Windows: if its not a Windows UI widgit, it doesn't go in Office. And another thing: What about our "third-party" VSes? (Enabled either through StylesXP or the uxtheme.dll patch.) Will they also skin the UI? I know that MS doesn't want to supprt them, but they do exist... Can any beta testers answer this question, with screenshots? (I can't wait for a Watercolor Office! )

I too am a beta tester and am very impressed with this beta 1 build. It is very stable, not had it crash at all yet. Apart from the minor bugs like options not fully doing what they should, this is a very solid build for beta 1. Oh and it loads fast too!!!.
