Me too... after you!
This new PowerBook should be considered as a desktop computer too. Imagine its keyboard with backlit light, when you are online at night! How romantic
PC Laptop industry is going to steal this technology soon. Believe it or not!

- I believe Safari is based off of KHTML, not the mozilla (geko) engine. KHTML is the same base the popular linux web browser konqueror uses

- Indeed, timdorr must has made the mistake. Apple improves number of thing in the KHTML, so they will (have to) release the source code of it.

- Isn't titanium stronger than aluminum? I kind of fail to see reason why replace from aluminum to titanium. Maybe, price? Can anyone clear the cloud for me? I am glad that they don't choose the gecko engine (must be due to license?), I never like it. Hey, no flame war, it's my opinion.

- I sure hate to sound like a troll here, but how does Apple stay in business? $1800 for a laptop with an 867 mhZ processor and a 12-inch screen?! You can get an Inspiron 8200 with a 15-inch screen and 2 Ghz P4 processor for less than that. Way to knock a dent in that 2% market share, Mr. Jobs. Remind me again how he keeps his job.

Remind me again how he keeps his job.[/neoquote] well in Apple's defense. most people who buy laptops don't play games on it so they could argue that point. also the powerbook is very light (4.8 pds??) but think about it like this, the ultra light weight laptops that only come with an 800 P3 that PC companies are selling 1.8 thin, 800 mhz chip, i don't think it has a video card at all, and at the smallest 3 lbs is priced at most places starting between $1699-$1899. and they only have a 12.1 inch screen. so compared to those the Apple 12 inch is a DAMN good purchase. if i got one i'd probably get this one, no more ibook for me. i still think the 17 inch is overkill. personally speaking, as much as i like the cool factor of the new laptops i probably wouldn't get one, because i don't mind the weight of a PC laptop...seriously now are you going to carry it all day?? no, you're going to carry it to like a table or something and set it down on something, so weight is irrelevant. I PLAY GAMES. this is why i have a super desktop, if i get a laptop it would be nice to have that option of knowing i can play my games to. another thing, they better hurry up and update the 15inch, cause i don't care if it does have 1mb of level 3 cache. it's still using pc133 ram. the 12inch and the 17inch use ddr (266 and 333 respectively). i can't wait to see benchmarks cause the 15 inch is going to get ate alive. on the low end i would just opt for the 12inch, better performance. and on the high end of the 15 inch i would just opt for the 17inch for the same reason. if Apple is trying to clear inventory of the 15inch they're doing a bad job.

- actually yes the inspiron does come with 266 ddr memory. it's had it for at least 6 months now, Apple is finally catching up. oh yeah it has a bigger screen and a higher resolution. 40gb harddrive?? no i think it has 60 lol, and once again the PC laptop has had ata 100 for the longest. combo drive? you bet it does nvidia geforce 4 420?? naw you can CHOOSE from the g4 440 or the radeon 9000 (64mb ddr) plus it has MORE GAMES to choose from. firewire 400?? yes airport extreme ready??? well since airport is just 802.11g the dell will get this eventually, but for now i think it does have the B version. bluetooth?? give them a month, don't have it now. VGA..S-video out?? of course small factor?? not even close, but refer to my previous post about that. you can check out this link for yourself to. http://www.dell.com/us/en/fss/products/model_inspn_3_inspn_8200.htm#tabtop here's the question does Apple have a notebook that has a 2Ghz chip in it with a 400mhz system bus???

- he said 256 not 384. and i always include the education price for both systems. but let's see the price difference between both the systems with 384 memory. let's not spread fud cause you now that price is wrong for higher education systems. you must have forgot the FREE upgrade to 384 memory that Dell is offering now and free display upgrade. and the $150 off the system price. oh yeah both systems have 3 year warranty. the apple doesn't have any office suite at all, i choose the simplest one for the Dell. which probably adds $50 looking at the Dell system the price is $2238 specs: 2.2ghz P4 60 gig harddrive 384 ram radeon 9000 (yeah it's not the same, but just to prove a point) combo drive no floppy drive and the internal wirless option they have the Apple system and price: $2220 (12inch model) all the base specs and 384 ram 60 gig harddrive 3 year warranty. now tell me how you came up with 2373 for the 8200??? his point was that spending all this money he'd just get a system like the 8200 that could play more games, having a better video card and running windows allows him to do that.

- lol you're such a liar. i didn't even include the superdrive cause it would add $200 to the price. anybody can configure the higher education price for the Apple and come up with the price i did. i see you continue to ignore the 3 year warranty for the Apple to make it look cheaper, when i included the 3 year option for BOTH the systems. and this is ordering it online, just like ordering the dell. and it still doesn't include tax or shipping. i also notice that you seem to have forgot the airport card, well i forgot it this time to.
APP for PowerBook (w/ or w/o display) - Enrollment Kit M8853LL/A 7-10 days Remove $332.00 $332.00

[/neoquote] Where's the superdrive in your Dell? Bluetooth adaptor? Wireless internet? How about weight? Since it is a laptop, weight is VERY VERY important. How much does your dell weigh? why don't you compare it with Dell's slim laptop model, since they would be in the same class. The 8200 is a desktop replacement. The 12" AlBook isn't. Dell can't compete in the laptop area. Since we're using education prices, you can get the 12" AlBook (with Superdrive, Airport extreme card, 384mb ram, 60gig) for 2107 including your precious (but unnecessary) 3 year warranty with the Student Developer discount.
-
#22.9 Posted by macrosslover on 08 Jan 2003 - 21:10
- well once again i gave my reason for weight in a previous post about the Apple and Dell.
superdrive?? i didn't include it in either of the first config, it's included in this one cause he asked for it. i can ask where's your 64mb video card??? bluetooth, i said my peace about that previously.
why not compare it with they slim laptop model?? because the person was talking about the 8200 model, refer to a previous post.
dell can't compete in the laptop area?? well they seem to be doing a good job at #1
3 year warranty unnecessary?? lol have you ever had a computer that didn't have a problem in 3 years??
and now you're trying to add a new dimension to the price, student developer discount. well i don't know if Dell offers that, but since everybody isn't a developer, we have to go based on the price that regular students can get.
but it's still amazing how you Mac fans beat around the basic argument. his argument from the start (if i haven't forgot by now) was that paying all this money, he'd just get a Dell.
before you all have a heart attack. nobody never said the Mac notebook wasn't bad, i said (i believe he did to) i wouldn't get it. there are many different types of users, i'm a gamer and i could care less about the weight of a laptop, i want the best performance, and none of the Apple notebooks can meet my needs. they may meet yours, but they don't meet mine. but you must have ignored my previous post defending the Apple laptop, you should go read that.

I have applecare, i got one year free and when i signed back up at the end of that year I got another 3 years.
The trick is to renew at the end of the first year.
As far as the dell, YOU might get the dell but most people in this topic if the price was the same would get the tibook

You do realise you're wrong. 867MHz is a G4 chip. These G4 chips are 4 times faster than any Pentium today (including the 3.06GHz cpu).
G4 is 128-bit (so is Mac OS X).
P4 is 32-bit (so is crappy WinXP).
Normal laptops don't even compare, not only the hardware but the Operating System, laptops have more of a reputation of being faulty than Apple's, and laptops use Windows (yuk).
But anyhow, Apple rocks and these new laptops rock even more.
(considering purchasing a 17" TFT seperately costs a hell of a lot, (the same for the small HDD [physically that is] and fast ddr memory - the price isn't too bad), but yes it's still a lot of money. But I'm still planning on purchasing one

- DjmUK..I think you need to stop listening to Apple's marketing dept. That and double checking your facts would be nice. The new laptops are sweet. Can't say I really like Safari though. Keynote looks promising.
