Promising to open the floodgates for media content delivery, RealNetworks is releasing a digital rights management platform that supports both standards-based and Internet media formats, such as RealAudio, RealVideo, MP3, and MPEG-4.

The company's Helix DRM platform, announced Thursday, is meant to solve the conundrum faced by content providers and device manufacturers over having to support a hodgepodge of DRM platforms.

"We feel like we've broken through a logjam, offering a single format for a pipeline of content," said Dan Sheeran, RealNetworks' vice president of media systems.

The release of the DRM comes as part of the company's new Helix strategy, announced last year. Helix is both a platform and a community for the standardization and expansion of digital media. Through Helix, Real offers source code for media creation, delivery, and playback, which it calls Helix DNA, so that community members can build media-capable products, intellectual property, and user interfaces."

Thank you RealNetworks for giving in to the overwhelming consumer demand for DRM. Your support and development for end users is simply stunning. I'm excited that a company such as RealNetworks has implemented such often "cried-for" features such as spyware, background executables that sit in memory without explanation, and demanding an email address on every install or upgrade. Please continue on your current path for as long as possible. And may you fade into irrelevancy in the process.

Real Networks and Real Player are nothing but pure crap! Anyone who encodes anything into real media should be hung!

I also got the latest free version real one player and get this, when I play a streaming file, if that file has low bandwidth available, ie it buffers a lot, real player shuts down all connections to the internet. I'm not able to connect using any program to anything on the internet unless I reboot computer/modem. I've tried this several times and it only happens when using their program, sh*t and they want money for this?!?
