CHIP GIANT INTEL will release a version of the Itanium in 2005 that includes two processors in the same package – confirming reports from last year. And, apparently, according to Mike Kanellos at news.com it will up the level three cache on Itanium Madison processors to 9MB next year. That's not shown on current Intel roadmaps seen by PC manufacturers so far. Madison and Deerfield are launched in the middle of this year, and the cache for the former is as much as 6MB and will run at a speed of 1.5GHz.
According to the Kanellos piece, the Intel Montecito Itanium will have the dual processor cores. Recently we reported that AMD could scale its future Hammer technology to a two core model too. Montecito will be made on a 90 nanometer process. It is this chip that is the first to be likely to include elements from the Alpha processor that Intel magically swiped off Compaq before HP bought it.
