JOHN CARMACK - Mr Doom - has passed some comments about the performance of the forthcoming GeForce FX (NV30) technology versus the ATI Radeon 9700 Pro (R300) graphics technology on the Clanbase web site.
In a message there, Carmack said that the NV30 technology is slightly faster on most Doom scenes, but sometimes the R300 technology pulls ahead.

It's complicated, he said, because of the different way cards using these graphics chips run the game.

He said that NV30 runs Doom in five different modes, while the R300 runs the game in three different modes.

Using an apples-to-apples comparison makes it look as if the R300 is twice as fast, but using vendor specific paths gives the NV30 GPU a clear advantage.

He also says that taking up two slots is a disadvantage for a GeForce FX and the cooling fans are VERY LOUD (his caps).

Vodafone, meanwhile, will now be able to tempt its 13 million UK subscribers to engage in additional wireless data activities, from which the company is looking to draw 20 percent of its revenues by next year. Vodafone already offers IM and e-mail services through Vodafone Live, but the company has admitted that its e-mail service pales in comparison to Hotmail. Microsoft and Vodafone have already teamed up in the UK to give business users access to e-mail.

In the UK, Microsoft says it has 7.4 million active Hotmail users and 4.6 million active users of the MSN instant-messaging service, which allows users to see when contacts are on-line. Microsoft and Vodafone will share revenue generated by the new messaging service.

The whole card is a joke.... nvidia skipped a production cycle for this and it's barely faster then the R300. I think that ATi will give nvidia a big blow when it turns out that the R350 will crush the GeforceFX.

I agree, keeping in mind that nv30 is a sizable jump from nv25 performance, but thats not making the card look any better when up against the r300. I for one was hoping for a monster card in the nv30. While i have liked ati cards for a while. I love to see competition and this is definately not even 30% faster that nvidia was promising. r350 I'm waiting for you!

That thier FX would be 30% faster then the 9700PRO.

Anyone here know if the 9700 pro will support 144 refresh rate? If so my next card will be built by ATI.

Man.. I can't believe what a huge dissapointment this FX card has turned out to be.. I have never been biased to any particular brand, so I am not really fussed.. but the Nvidia fans really dont have a lot to sing about right now do they Loud, underperforming, power hungry, and freakin expensive. Not exactly a master stroke by Nvidia

i have to agree with you there... This card is gonna be a dud once people buy it and hear its noise problems and see that there is nothing special compared to a Radeon 9700 Pro

wait till the gainward card is out .. the noise level will be nothing compare to the cards released now.

The card is a total joke. It is "kind of" a step in the right direction, but it should not have been released so soon. Maybe more refining would have done them good. At any rate I have no interest in the card. I already have an ATI Radeon 9700Pro. The combination of already having spent over four hundred dollars, the extra slot needed for it to install, and the loud noise of the fan is enough to do me in on not purchasing this card.
