In order to comply with a preliminary injunction forcing the company to include Sun Microsystem's Java in Windows, Microsoft is preparing two updates to Windows XP Service Pack 1.

An initial update dubbed SP1a is expected early this month and will be identical to the currently available SP1, but stripped of Microsoft's Java. SP1b will follow in June, featuring Sun's latest Java revision and meeting the timetable established by the court.

As part of the injunction, SP1b will be made available on CD as well as Windows Update. Sun's Java releases will also be added to Windows Update for users to install independent of the service pack.

Microsoft stressed that the updates are intended only for new installs of Service Pack 1 and will not impact customers.

Windows XP Service Pack 2, slated to enter beta testing later this year, will additionally feature Sun's Java technology.

I assumed something like this would happen. I think they should make a service pack which will prompt the user which version of the JAVA VM they want to install. This would cause no problems that I can see and would be the best decision as it would not mean 2 SPs have to be released in a space of a few months!

And then we'll be screwed when SP2 comes out. Nah, it's pretty unavoidable.

I hope Sun's happy. Sun has to understand, it's not Microsoft that has caused the lack of adoption for Java(in fact, much of the web uses Java and even javascripting, but soon moving to xml). Java2 never caught on because developers didn't bother writing for it. Much of Java2's modern commands in fact invalidate older ones and can make older java applets to cease functioning. Of course, they don't tell users this. So it ought to be fun

I think the Microsoft VM has always run so much nicer than Sun's Java on any of my systems. This is a pretty bad thing.

To A-KO: I guess you really dont know too much about java then 1) Microsoft has done a lot to make sure Java doesnt succeed. Just as MS does in almost everything: they take a standard, modify it so its incompatible, then release their own version. Microsoft has included this botched version of their own java implementation for years. Having a widely spread incompatible run time included on a great precentage of machines does alot to hinder the accpetance of a language that is supposed to create a platform independent base. This is exactly what the judges agreed upon, hence the settlement in the first place. 2) Java is it NO WAY related to javascript. the only thing they have in common is word "java" in the name. Additionally, XML is not a programming or scripting language at all! 3) Every language eventually makes changes so that old code is in compatible. This is nothing new and is part of the cost of progress. The great thing about java applet portablility is I can still compile old jars with and an old java 1.1 sdk if I wish and then simply make the applet tag denote that this applet is only java 1.1 compliant. Then the JRE will run it in older 1.1 mode. So before you start making blanket statements, try doing some research.

I Respectfully disagree on Number 2. Lots of Java syntax and javascript synatx are the same, for you to say they're not related is incorrect.

To koan: 2 or 3 years ago i think, java took MS to court because they wanted their runtime out of windows, thatīs why ms made their own version. now java is demanding to re-include their runtime. itīs a sad day for justice.

If i do remember correctly m$ did brought licence from sun & relesase its own vm. I think this licence thing is shit in the end m$ still has to pay for new licence or include java as part of its os.

I want to see Microsoft in court making SUN have the .Net Framework in their OS. Lets hope it runs as a service and can be disabled.

Microsoft appears to have updated their site already with SP1a (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/servicepacks/sp1/default.asp). Not available on CD in the UK yet though so several more hours on 56k modem spent downloading it i suppose.

Then force the installation of the .NET Framework too! Whats fair is fair! You'll notice even a Slipstreamed SP1 Install, you still need to go to Windows Update for .NET Framework! Windows XP Service Pack 1a Microsoft continually works to improve its software. As part of this effort, we develop updates and fixes to recognized issues and release them for customers. On a regular basis, we combine many of these fixes into a single package and make the package available for you to install on your computers. These packages are called Service Packs. Windows XP Service Pack 1a (SP1a) provides the latest security and reliability updates to the Windows XP family of operating systems, and includes Internet Explorer 6 SP1a. Windows XP SP1a is designed to ensure Windows XP platform compatibility with newly released software and hardware, and includes updates that resolve issues discovered by customers or by Microsoft's internal testing team. To determine whether to install Windows XP SP1a, we recommend reviewing the Windows XP documentation and information below. If you have already installed Windows XP SP1, you do not need to Windows XP SP1a. For further information about the specific difference between Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 1a (SP1a) for Windows XP, see article 813926, Differences Between Service Pack 1 and Service Pack 1a

Suns JRE rules! You guys don't know anything about Java - its sooooooooo obvious! Java does a lot more than just running applets - There are virually no developers left writing Java 1 code!!! I'm one of many writing Java 2! Java 1 technology is 8 years old - how behind are you guys???

It may do more than "Just run applets" which is true, the average consumer, only sees what the Swing Package or GUI's they don't give a rats behind about what java does for backend. I am taking Java in school now, its a great language, but i'm going to play with C# .NET after i'm finished with it. Java is Slow IMO.
