By the end of this year, Microsoft would like you to see a pop-up menu linking all the devices in your home when you switch on your living room television.

The PC could eventually be replaced by a TV
It has designed a Media Centre-equipped PC which will store digital pictures, home videos, and music, act as a digital video recorder, and play DVDs in a living room friendly package.

Microsoft Windows XP Media Centre Edition has been available in the United States since late last year but adapting it to work with European television standards is taking time.

The company promises a launch in the UK, Germany and France this year.

if my home is all going to be integrated, let me assure you, I will not use microsoft products! (I do not trust them with my home, especially with the talk of TCPA -- "Sorry, you are not licenced to use more than two lights simultaniously" ) that reminds me of this: [*] You now pay a yearly fee for each switch in your home. [*] You are prompted to accept a licensing agreement before making coffee [*] Patches for your toaster control module come out weekly. [*] You were forced to upgrade the driver for your bedroom-ceiling fan twice last week. [*] You can't legally use all of the lights in your house concurrently. [*] A virus has taken over your controller and is using it to turn on and off the Christmas tree at the Whitehouse. [*] Your home automation protocol is "Like X-10, Only Better!" [*] Your new garbage compactor requires you to throw everything away twice. [*] You replace every switch, outlet, module, and controller in your home every two years. [*] At least once a day you are force to stop your current task, close all of your windows, and shut down and restart your home." ahh... classic I found the full SCP (remember? Simple Control Protocol) thing here: >> Here <<

Microsoft is never really going to get into the home market like the living room, simple because other companys will lock them out, they arnt going to take the risk of Microsoft having control over them, which in the long run is what will happen, the only way we'll ever get the computer connected up to everything else in the house is when windows is not the OS, in otherwords, it will only happen when something like Linux takes over, simple because they don't have to fear that, it's open, free and not controled, and best of all, any of the companys can alter it to what they need.

If you don't want to wait a bunch of people already figured out how to build your own and get them running in Europe on PAL. Home Media Center or whatever. They used the same slogan when they were pushing Microsoft TV or what was it called WebTV? I remember seeing those vcr like boxes with Microsoft written on them a while back.

Wait until your toilet gets a blue screen and you can't open the lid.

It's more of a mix really, the tv will be the PC in the future, likely to be terminals around the house to the main box.
