Judge-dread becomes reality

Ever see judge dread? They had these cools guns which only fired if your finger print was authorised; film just became reality.

"Pretoria inventor Nic van Zyl has developed what may be the world’s first "intelligent firearm", a handgun that can be operated only by its rightful owner. It could make criminal abuse of firearms a thing of the past.It looks like a cross between a sci-fi raygun and an industrial high-pressure cleaning device. Bulky and block-like, it displays none of the black-metal menace inherent in most civilian firearms, and frankly, it is not a thing of beauty.

The IFA, as it’s known, uses a biometric sensor located just above the handgrip to activate its firing capability. The sensor is encoded with the thumbprint of an authorised user (or users): unless it recognises the imprint, it remains inoperative. As Van Zyl says, an unauthorised person could use it to clobber someone over the head, but that’s about it.

“This is the first firearm to enter the electronics age in terms of authorised use. It could be used for personal protection, or in a responsible peacekeeping role. There is a real need for a gun like this.” In conjunction with the biometric sensor, the electronic chip located in the gun’s pistol grip will be encoded with a range of additional information regarding the user’s personal details, including fingerprints, identity number, and licence status (that is, whether the firearm is for personal protection, hunting, police or military use). "

Just make sure you don't have an evil twin brother :D.

  • Fixed improper disconnections from the game lobby. You should no longer see the "Lost connection to Generals online" error when your connection is still active.

  • Fixed language filter stability.

  • Added a new command line for mod developers that lets Generals run user-created content. Simply add the "-mod" command line after the generals.exe target path, followed by the name of any user-created .big file or user-created directory. The correct path would like this: "C:Program FilesEA GamesCommand and Conquer Generalsgenerals.exe" -mod MyGeneralsMod.big. All user-created content must be placed in the "Command and Conquer Generals Data" folder within your "c:Documents and Settings" directory.

  • Fixed the missing artwork for the "random private" rank in Generals online.

  • Fixed the rank hack where some players appear to have a higher rank than they should.

  • Increased the allowed time for game to negotiate matching between players.

  • Fixed some instances of the "serious error" crash.

  • Added a new 4 player Multiplayer Map: Rogue Agent

  • Implemented the following balance changes:

    • Tunnel Network build speed increased from 5 seconds to 20 seconds.
    • Marauder hit points increased from 430 to 490.
    • Stealth Fighter hit points increased from 120 to 140.
    • Explosion damage done by Chinese Nuke Tanks when they are destroyed is reduced from 25 to 10.
    • Nuke Cannon changed so it moves the same speed when damaged, not faster.
    • Aurora speed increased from 90 to 120 after it drops its bomb. Damaged speed increased from 60 to 120.

If you read the article, you'd see that the expected cost is only 50% over a similar 'dumb firearm.'

Neat! This is pretty cool!
#7 CheeseCow on 15 Mar 2003 - 17:19
Yup! I'm sure it would help making the streets safer too

Interesting, but totally unnecessary...
#8.1 nacs on 15 Mar 2003 - 19:09
That's a bit short-sighted I think. It has many potential uses once this technology gets reliable enough. Such as for cops to prove that the person they were shooting at really was hostile (because it takes a photo every time a shot is fired).

[neoquote=#8.0 by harleydog]Interesting, but totally unnecessary...[/neoquote] Unnecessary???? I think it is an awesome step in the right direction. If someone broke into my home and stole my arsenal, they could do A LOT of damage. A LOT. It could also prevent the countless accidental shootings from kids playing with guns. Not to mention the unfortunate incidents like Columbine High School. It would never completely stop unauthorized use of guns, but it is a sensible step in the right direction. And I have been a card carrying member of the NRA for 7 years. I like my guns....A LOT, but I also feel it is our responsibility to be as safe as possible.

They arent identical if they have different fingerprints

you can crack fingerprint identification with £50 of equipment and a pc with scanner, printer & adobe photoshop and also a copy of course the original fingerprint that you are cracking
#15 valhalla on 15 Mar 2003 - 21:53
lol . So what next? Laser gunto shoot down BlackHawk? btw that gun look ugly. They should improve the design
#16 [f] on 15 Mar 2003 - 21:54
you can crack fingerprint identification with £50 of equipment and a pc with scanner, printer & adobe photoshop
, lol "gimme all yer money, but first help me find a place here on the street where I can plug this scanner in...."
#17 [f] on 15 Mar 2003 - 21:55
if this fingerprint scannign system for guns works, it should be mandatory on EVERY gun manufactured for civillian sales.
#18 [f] on 15 Mar 2003 - 21:56
you can crack fingerprint identification with £50 of equipment and a pc with scanner, printer & adobe photoshop
and isn't that be more like £3000 worth of equipment?..lol
#19 valhalla on 15 Mar 2003 - 23:53
I think this will become the next INFAMOUS GUN hehehhehe.
#20 chilliadus on 16 Mar 2003 - 01:50
What if in an extreme emegency the chip fails to recognize that you're the legal owner? It needs not to be a flaw in the design or implementation, maybe you just cut your thumb and applied a bandaid. Unless another (and different) machanism is developed to backup the fingerprint recog to make it absolutely reliable (at least as reliable as the current gun), most ppl will avoid the gun -- it provides no befinits to its user in most situations, and it can be circumvented in a lo-tech way which I don't want to elaborate.
(2 replies) #21 aleks on 16 Mar 2003 - 03:01
damn now we have to cut off a finger of the owner if we want to steal his or her gun.
#21.1 destrox on 16 Mar 2003 - 03:35
you are exactly right
#21.2 nacs on 16 Mar 2003 - 19:24
I think you mean to actually use the gun. Stealing the gun just involves picking it up and running. But even with the owner's severed finger, it'd be pretty tough to aim since you have to stick the finger in the trigger and pull on that finger.
#22 skaife on 16 Mar 2003 - 03:38
and they should make it so they guns can be 'disabled' then a peacekeeper hacker comes along and disables every gun on the planet
#23 RogueJawa on 16 Mar 2003 - 04:51
no more shooting guns with gloves on
