Above is part of the email to alert testers that Microsoft Windows iSCSI 1.0 Beta 2 has begun. Essentially the iSCSI standard approved by the IETF (Internet Engineering Task Force) allows connections between data storage and facilites not physically connected but connected by LAN/WAN and the internet across long distances. It enables companies to quickly retrieve massive amounts of data stored at distant locations.

WiNBETA have provided screenshots of the installation process and we have mirrored them below.

Also note that the iSCSI driver itself is complied from Windows Server 2003 build 3788 which is currently in escrow.

Note: I have no affilication with the company - I'm just a user who thinks it's the the right direction for the future of the Internet.

Right, is it just me or is does this seem like a waste of time??? it's not going to make transfers any faster from what I can see! Ok so the software/standard is not designed to do this, but to make it easier to accomplish. But I still don't see the point. Plus unless this is a free product, I can't see many companies actually buying this software. Just my point of view.

I mean what would you have to do to beta test it, once accepted. I didn't apply just curious what you test, do you need iSCSI hardware ?

Well yes you need an iSCSI compatible device to test this on. It's mainly for developers but the feeling among many is that its pretty useless anyway.

It is like a Winodws version of AFS space or Samba.. so #1, why don't you keep your opinion to yourself? Besides, Intel is the one that started it, and already on Sourceforge, people always started writing codes to support it on Linux/BSD.. Windows is actually behind Linux right now.. #2, it is easy to test. set up a server.. and then.. access your files remotely with command line. I will probably test it sometime this weekend.
