Following on from the Exclusive info Neowin posted yesterday about Windows Messenger 5. We are now able to bring you the download thanks to Winbeta & ieXbeta

Windows Messenger 5 is part of the Greenwich beta released by Microsoft about a week ago. Windows Messenger 5 supports 3 instant messaging services: MSN .NET, Exchange IM (part of Exchange 2000), and RealTime Communication Server (RTC, codename Greenwich). RTC uses an Internet-standard IM protocol called SIP (Session Initation Protocol). This client also supports Ink messages for tablet PC's. Simply install this leaked build on any tablet PC to send Ink messages. For those without a tablet PC, you can still receive Ink messages from your friends with tablet PCs.

This is BETA software!, please use caution when installing it on your system

According to the report, illegal stickers have become an eyesore in recent years, with China's coastal and urbanized areas blighted with a blizzard of advertisements.

This is because the postcard-sized stickers, which promote everything from fake identity cards to counterfeit academic certifications, are cheap to produce and offer some anonymity.

The new system rings the mobile phone numbers of illegal advertisers at 20-second intervals, said the People's Daily.

Upon answering the call, the wrongdoer hears the pre-recorded message--"You have broken the law by posting illegal ads. You must immediately stop this activity and go to the Hangzhou Urban Administrative Bureau for punishment."

Those who prefer to change their "poisoned" number rather than face punishment incur the fees and inconvenience of switching, and also lose any business their ad might have generated.

The system also dents the advertisers' bottom line as ad respondents are unlikely to get through, thanks to the mobile barrage. As the anti-sticker scheme is newly launched, results have yet to come in, said the report.

Ordinary folks need not worry about being spammed by mistake as the phone numbers are taken from photos of illegal advertisements, said Wei Yunxiang, an official with the Hangzhou Urban Administrative Bureau.

The numbers are also checked manually and require the approval of a senior official before the bombardment can begin, he told the People's Daily.

Pros: No ads Opens Outlook Express instead of the hotmail web-interface No clunky interface like MSN5 Ink (even though I havn't tried it) Support for more services Cons: Same spy-ware as discussed about MSN Messenger 5 Mysterious Extra spaces on the sign in screen and under the recipent in a convo No add-ins / Not many tabs, although tabs can be selected Messenger Plus! incompatable Can't view profiles Conclusion: Basically a slim-downed version of the current windows messenger, MSN5 is clunky and under-intergrated, WM5 has a lack of features- but is probably designed to be good in a business enviroment I wouldn't jump onto the Windows Messenger 5 Boat just yet, not until it's at least a more developed version. And if WM5 were to be released like this tommorow, I'ld stick to 4.7!

#9 Skerit on 25 Mar 2003 - 13:06
Only thing I can come up with is that they just released the wrong one, cause the screenshot is totally different and bink uses it. Maybe this was an older version...

Wonder what Paulio boy said? Wishing he got the exclusive
#11.2 JaggedFlame on 25 Mar 2003 - 19:14
Not like it matters that much who gets the exclusive, but getting in petty fights about it like word fights and comment moderation is a little childish on both parts.

does this work for win2000 ?

I just wish Windows Messenger could be uninstalled completely, and MSN Messenger take over totally. None of this half ass compatibility between the 2, lol.

[neoquote=#17.0 by net-cruizer]I just wish Windows Messenger could be uninstalled completely, and MSN Messenger take over totally. Creating a System Restore point on XP before making any changes makes the whole thing pretty much fool proof in case you screw up. In this case you boot into 2000, delete the Messenger directory from your XP Program Files directory, boot back into XP, remove all registry references to Windows Messenger (Norton WinDoctor is quick and effective for this), then install MSN Messenger. Works like a charm.

I guess they think it's okay and alright to do because they're not going to take the whole site down. Whatever.
#20 blowdart on 25 Mar 2003 - 20:13
Wonderful idea. Install leaked beta software ... that has to login to Microsoft servers when it starts. And polls them as it runs. And the grand prize for IM stupidity goes to ....
#21 ChiefWahoo on 25 Mar 2003 - 20:21
what about UPnP, is it still there or they finally got rid of it?
#22 MxxCon on 25 Mar 2003 - 21:19

#23 hodgear on 25 Mar 2003 - 21:41

#25 Darkness2k on 25 Mar 2003 - 22:42
Shame the INK feature requires a "TabletPC".... wanted to draw with the mouse Anyway, saw this in the help file : - "Requirements for using INK: You need a computer running Microsoft Windows XP or Windows 2000 with Windows Messenger version 5.0 (or MSN Messenger version 6.0). The latest version of Windows Messenger can be downloaded from the Windows Messenger site. " MSN Messenger 6? Getting ahead of themselves!

Well after a long time in waiting and with much anticipation, I downloaded Windows Messenger 5.0, and it's ... well ... crap ... I say that you should all stick with Windows Messenger 4.7 and using Plus! 2 by patchou.
