AMD 'evaluating' 400MHz FSB for Athlon XP

AMD has said it is at least thinking about upping the Athlon XP's front side bus speed to 400MHz. An Athlon XP with a 400MHz FSB appeared on an AMD roadmap described by Japanese web site PC Watch last week. The site claimed AMD will launch an Athlon XP based on the Barton core, with 512KB of L2 cache and a 400MHz FSB late April/early May. Performance ratings, it said, will range to at least 3200+.

AMD, not surprisingly, doesn't comment on this kind of speculation. However, Ace's Hardware, speaking to an AMD operative, asked whether the company would increase the Athlon XP's FSB to 400MHz the better to compete with Intel's upcoming Canterwood chipset and its 800MHz FSB. The AMD guy admitted that the company is "evaluating the possibility of moving Athlon XP to a 400 FSB".

Cool should give intel a run for their money, and a nice upgrade path for people with nforce2 boards.

By this time, P4 will be at 800Mhz

Im not sold on the 800Mhz FSB. Give me bechmarks, not meaningless specs/numbers

[neoquote=#1.6 by RobertH]Im not sold on the 800Mhz FSB. Give me bechmarks, not meaningless specs/numbers [/neoquote] 23 Percent on Memory. 15-25 percent on software. Use The Forum Search "Canterwood" You'll see many threads.

23 Percent on Memory compared too? the 533mhz FSB? same for the 15-25 percent on software? But then considering the Athlon's postition id like to see how this 400mhz fsb increase would affect performance too...

how do you "evaluate" a decision like this, Either Incorperated it or Not. Yes Or No. lol

AMD are a bunch of freakin morons. They used to have a huge grip on Intel and now they are falling really short, because they are not staying up with the compitition. There is no compition until they try to compete again Intel like they did about a 2 years ago. Come on AMD. Make the AMD fans happy so we keep buying.

You got that right. I really love my AMD, and I'll buy a new Barton too. But after that I'll change to Intel, I really think AMD is falling behind.

falling behind is an understatement....The core had been out for 5 years (5 years for such an technological advance industry!!), and AMD is sure milking out for all it worth :p , look at Nvidia, they dont spend that much time on a chip because they actually put money to maintain their maket position. Athlon max out a long time ago...anyway AMD had done it again (and again and again) to milk out blood out from a stone
