Thanks Khujo for the heads up

Thats right folks, just like Windows XP SP2 and Longhorn a few weeks back another build of Windows XP SP2 has found its way onto the internet. Holding the build number 5.1.2600.1185 (xpsp2.030313-1931) there are clear indications that SP2 is progressing in it's development and might well be ready to go into its beta stages sooner than we expected.

From what we can see there are no major changes to SP2 apart from hotfixes included, no WMP9, Windows Messenger 5/MSN Messenger 6, DirectX9, or three degrees.

mm, will it include the new dx9 and wmp9?, if so great slipstream here we come it a pain to add those man.
#3.1 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 13:47
You don't get this sort of things in Service Packs. Like companies are going to add a service pack that adds DX9 and WMP 9.
#3.2 creamhackered on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:40
I don't hold out for DX9 myself as it has no major aspects about it that mean people must have it. However WMP9 I am expecting Microsoft will push it into an SP or its codecs so that XP is compatible with Windows Server 2003's Media Services

You could always use steganography to embed the url into your sig.
#17 Makki on 28 Mar 2003 - 13:18
hmm kinda makes the post pointless but i can understand why seeing the hassle Microsoft gave Neowin before. So im cool with that.

Hey Z3r0, whats the name of the file? "xpsp2_2.002_usa_x86fre_upd.iso"? thats what i'm downloading 70% done what sp2 version is it 1185 ?
(5 replies) #19 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:00
Service Packs will never come with the below items: WMP9, Windows Messenger 5/MSN Messenger6, DirectX9, Movie Maker 2 or three degrees. Companies want bug fixes not these sort of things, maybe there should be a bug fix SP and a consumer version with all the extras.
#19.1 creamhackered on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:09
Thats funny, SP1 included Windows Messenger 4.7. There are already rumours of plans to intergrate 3 degrees into SP2.
#19.2 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:21
3Degrees is aimed at teenagers, why would they add that to the service pack it makes no sence.
Service Packs will never come with the below items:
Would you mind pointing me to a quote at Microsoft that says this? Otherwise I think I'll just wait for them to decide. Windows XP is not just for companies, and since things like DirectX, Movie Maker, etc. are already integrated into the OS to start with wouldn't it make sense to include updates for them in the service pack?
#19.4 MZatko55 on 28 Mar 2003 - 18:34
How about a service pack to take them out, please. The 2 gig install footprint of xp is rediculous, especially when all those useless extras are forced into it. Whatever happened to a customized Windows install?
#19.5 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 18:58
Since Microsoft said they will not add new features to Service Packs.
(1 reply) #20 Edge on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:10
I'm just happy that development is under way. I mean it really gets annoying downloading the same poop from windows update when I can grab it all in a nice SP package.
#20.1 leebobs on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:30
I know what you mean.... 17 Critical updates on a fresh install!!! What???
(2 replies) #21 Avenger on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:31
Hmm. I still haven't downloaded and installed XP SP1 yet. I was going to order it on CD. Sucks to have 56K. Guess I should just wait for SP2 then. Any info on the completion date for SP2?
#21.1 creamhackered on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:34
I think everyone is guessing a beta in june or maybe around that time and completition before the end of the year. Now Windows Server 2003 is finished they can focus more on security and sorting out hot fixes for Sp2
#21.2 Avenger on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:36
Hmm, longer then I thought. I'll wait, I've waited this long after all. Thanks.
#22 naap51stang on 28 Mar 2003 - 14:36
Heck, I just installed SP1 last weekend. I never ever install SP's until they've been out a while........XP was and is the most stable OS I've ever had, going all the way back to windows 3.0, which crashed every other reboot, not to mention the hassle of assigning IRQ's LOL........

This is build number 85 of SP2, it is still missing IE SP2, IPV6 & Windows Messenger 4.7.2005. All of which should be included with SP2..... I doubt it will include DX9, WMM2, WMP9, Win Messenger 5 or 3Degrees

#24.1 creamhackered on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:10
Its build 85 for a start. WMP9 or its codecs have to be included to support Windows Server 2003's media services. 3 Degress is a rumour and like 4.7 before it in SP1, 5.0 is likely to be included. DX9 and WMM2 and merely mentioned to squash rumours that they will be in SP2.
#24.2 leebobs on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:14
[neoquote=#24.1 by creamhackered]Its build 85 for a start. [/neoquote] Thanks, 1 out as usual
#24.3 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:22
IPV6 was added with SP1.
#24.4 leebobs on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:28
Why did I have to download a beta update before I could use three degrees then??
#24.5 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:31
Go to TCP-IP properties choose install - Protocols and then IPV6.

Just go to the command prompt and type "ipv6 install".

In regard to MSN Messenger/Windows Messenger, why doesn't Microsoft just merge the two versions of Messenger into one mature product, instead of having two products that essentially do the same thing. Microsoft needs to to do this in my opinion, as having two distinct versions of essentially the same chat program is just plain confusing, for the delevopers and for the end users.
#25.1 Jerichohol on 28 Mar 2003 - 15:33
Yes i agree, they need to do that. Use the best features of msn and windows messengers and merge them together. So SP2 already, thats good to hear
#25.2 params on 28 Mar 2003 - 17:58
don't forget, the reason they had to split windows messenger and msn messenger is because of all the DOJ. they CAN'T merge the two by law!
#26 Trust on 28 Mar 2003 - 16:07
I was wondering how slow will load now the apps when this sp2 is installed... and as soon as time will be available a patch in order to solve this problem lol j/k

The moment it includes 3 Degrees, it goes to hell. I'm happy with Windows Messenger and everything, as I can just uninstall that, but I hate that MS-P2P crap.
#29 Yakkob on 28 Mar 2003 - 16:47
They had better not put windows media player 9 in.. They can shove that POS software up their a$$. I want the right to decide if I want applications.. And I have decided NOT and also to NEVER install Windows Media Player 9. I just want security fixes and bug fixes..Thats it.
(1 reply) #30 rseiler on 28 Mar 2003 - 17:01
Incidentally, SP2 is not due until Q1 2004 (I wonder why such a large gap since SP1?), so anyone installing the alpha now would not only need their head examined but probably their PC as well. Good site to keep up with what's coming in SP2: http://www.ethan-c-allen.com/xpsp2
#30.1 leebobs on 28 Mar 2003 - 17:22
2004 WTF?!?! Well time to move my system to Win 2k SP4 I think, some security, stablility and relyability there
(1 reply) #31 Ishmael on 28 Mar 2003 - 17:05
wel yakkob, you have Media Player 8. It is twice the POS that 9 is, as well as it being only half as bad as Windows Media PLayer 7.1. Stuff your attitude because you don't have a leg to stand on in this example. Windows MEdia PLayer 9 just sucks a little less than the version before which sucked a little less than the one before it. Noone is stopping you from using Windows Media 6.4 until you die. Ishmael
#31.1 Yakkob on 29 Mar 2003 - 10:41
Stuff my attitude? Got out on the wrong side of the bed or summat? read my comment again...you plonker...Did I say I used Media player?..Err no..I dunna think so....

i had sp1 installed once... had it on my compy for about a week or so, before I kicked it of with my steel nosed sneakers omg, what a piece of junk that was... and besides that, it also put hick-ups to the sound, and terribly slow! so, I'll think more than twice, before installing any of this crap again!
#37.1 Jason on 28 Mar 2003 - 20:08
IBK errors obviously
#37.2 madjo on 28 Mar 2003 - 20:10
No I backtraced the problem to my realtek network card... but I couldn't understand why, so I removed the main cause of the problem
#37.3 PeterTHX on 29 Mar 2003 - 01:35
Put a "real" network card in, like 3Com or Intel.
#38 Krux on 28 Mar 2003 - 22:02
so you took the pos network card out?

Can someone explain to me why they would possibly want to install a BETA SP? I mean aren't service packs supposed to fix problems? Beta's are beta's for a reason. They still have problems.
#39.1 User on 29 Mar 2003 - 00:49
I LOVE BETAS
#39.2 btallack on 29 Mar 2003 - 00:51
Don't get me wrong, I've worked with a lot of beta's before, but those were generally new software or operating systems. It was a thrill to have features that no one else had. I've beta tested several microsoft products including windows 98 and 2000, but i did that to try out all the new functions. With a service pack there really isn't any significant new functions, just new bugs until the final comes out.
#39.3 DJ^TuRKiYe on 29 Mar 2003 - 00:52

so what so much fuss is about, like there would be any other interface. why post some lame screenie
#42 cvose on 29 Mar 2003 - 18:20
Why would anyone want to install an alpha SP? -Because we're bored, because we like reinstalling windows, because somebody has to test it, because most of us have more computers than things to do with them. Why does it not look differant? -Because it's a service pack, it fixes things rather than making them prettier. If you want prettiness go get the Plus! Pack. Where do you get these things? -No specifics, but there are circles of people out there who distribute this sort of thing, we get them second hand through them. On a side note though, I'm pleased to hear that SP2 will include IPv6, I'll be interested to see it in action. And I agree about downloading service packs later than when they're first released. An SP usually has a lot of testing behind it but the average Joe Admin waits and reads the reviews of it first to find out if it'll mess up their systems. Never install something you don't know much about on a production machine.
