Sun plans to get Java on PCs

Sun Microsystems expects major PC makers soon will begin bundling Sun's software for running Java programs on their computers, Sun executives said Friday. If successful, the move would bypass some of the legal wrangling between Sun and its arch-rival Microsoft. Microsoft has been variously adding and removing Java from Windows throughout the course of an antitrust suit Sun brought against the software colossus.

"The PC OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) are all looking at this point at licensing Java," said Jonathan Schwartz, Sun's executive vice president for software, in a meeting with reporters Friday. "We hope to have some progress on that soon."

Sun executives didn't reveal details, but Schwartz said one likely partner will be a "media company who happens to be a PC supplier," a likely reference to Sony. Java is a collection of software components that lets programs written in the Java programming language run on a variety of devices without having to be changed for each one. There are different categories of Java, the three broad ones being Java 2 Micro Edition for gadgets such as cell phones, Java 2 Standard Edition for desktop computers and Java 2 Enterprise Edition for servers.

this is what they should have been doing in the first place when Java was brewed. Instead they are trying to ride the coat tails of software companies. If they did this from the begining they wouldn't have had to worry what MS would do with it, water it down, add too much sugar, or spill a little here or there, all of this could have been avoided. This is the foremost reason that MS should win any case against them regarding Java. Becuase Sun let their coffee get cold waiting for someone to drink it now they have to warm it up in court or MS should provide the flame.

Man on my ole POS box a p3 733 256mbs ram thier own java web start crap takes forever to load and while it loads for a second takes like 100% cpu. This really sucks! Sun guys go home, let M$ rule the roost with the JVM.

The Microsoft JVM is the same speed as the Sun JVM on my PIII 650Mhz laptop, both takes at least 5 secs to load.

AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with 640 MB RAM, and JVM loads up at least twice as fast as JRE.

Microsoft JVM loads a lot faster in comparison with Sun Java on my P3 733 Mhz 512 Mb box. Plus Sun Java has this tray icon thing, and that's just very annoying because it uses tons of resources. It even breaks the Java applet on certain web pages.. Sun Java is crap Well, crap it is..but it runs quite well in Linux

I happen to know many of Sun's own engineers refuse to run Sun's jve. That says it all. It takes forever to load unless it is already memory resident. ONLY at that point does it load in the browser as fast as MS java VM. Sun can't even make up their own damn mind. First they sue to have it removed from Windows. Then they sue because MS removed it and then started their own runtime. Sun is run by a bunch of business retards IMO.

I totally agree #6 << Sun if you're listening to this I hope you burn in h*ll >>

They need a support group for you fools. (They call it college) I can imagine not needing Java if the most productive thing you do on your pc is post to forums and watch goofy flash videos, but for business its absolutely mandatory. As far as the 'ages to load' argument, you guys must have some pretty lousy machines. JRE has pretty transparent load times. And after it loads, it stays loaded for a while. I guess you would prefer Java to hog your resources when its not needed ala windows messenger and ie. And just remember, MS JVM isn't a real JVM. It is the one that is 'breaking' whatever you are trying to run. And remember, web start is a tool for launching remote applications. As far as Sun engineers not using its own jvm is bullshit propaganda and absolutely impossible. MS JVM isn't up to the Java2 standard. Even if you don't want to use Sun's own, use IBM's then. The MS one is an abomination. Ever use Mozilla or Open/Star Office? Thats JRE right there. Stop being foolish and making stupid arguments.
