Microsoft keep going on about piracy and wanting to stop it and then they go and release something a VLK edition of software which to be honest doesnt really need it. VLK is just to speed up mass deployment, something that isnt going to be a huge problem for companies as, if they have a decent sys admin, they will do a rollout of the new server OS and not upgrade them all at once, which means not having to activate will cause no real benefit. Just my 2c. Before anyone asks or calls me an idiot I work for a large corporation and although I am not the system administrator I have written guidelines for systems deployment within the business. So anyone saying companies will be upgrading there servers in one big server deployment has no idea of how a company goes about deployment or works at a company whos sys admin is a 16 year old kid with an MCSE who wants to setup a Windows 2003 Server as soon as possible! (no flame way please).

I do understand your point of view and I share it too. However most of Microsofts customers for Windows Server 2003 at the moment are large scale corporations such as intel who were testing alongside Microsoft in 2k3's development stages. For there not to be a corp version for large clusters of servers is not a good idea for such corporations and its always good to offer a Volume Licence version as an option.
#11.2 y_notm on 07 Apr 2003 - 00:51
you also have to take in the fact that VLKs aren't just for a way around activation. A company needs a license for every computer that uses the software, and for companies with dozens of servers a VL is much cheaper than buying dozens of licenses for windows. Corporate/VL was around long before XP, it just didn't get as much recognition because there was NO difference on products like Windows 2000 that didn't require activation
Corporate/VL was around long before XP, it just didn't get as much recognition because there was NO difference on products like Windows 2000 that didn't require activation
Yes I know the licenses are an issue for companies and that it is cheaper for them to buy a VL than say 500 retail licenses, however my point is that automatic activation is not needed, basically it is helping to promote piracy, how much news coverage has there been on a VLK in the past day or so? LOADS, it is promoting it to people who did not know about it before. If Microsoft want to stop people pirating their software they shouldn't enable things like automatic activation, like you said a VLK doesn't mean it just bypasses activation it means you have a Volume License, it doesnt (well it isn't ment to but this is what most people think) mean that you have a copy of Windows that activates itself!

so much for the people who swore that MS wouldn't do this for 2003 server. guess this kinda flies right in their faces!
#13 Michael Lerner on 07 Apr 2003 - 00:24
hehehe defeats M$'s 'strategy' of keeping down piracy, they may as well remore wpa from future version.
