TWO OF THE BIGGEST motherboard companies in the world are in preliminary talks to merge, the INQUIRER understands. MSI in the UK officially denied the possibility, when we asked for a comment earlier today. The two companies have already had preliminary merger discussions but those conversations are continuing, we have learned today.

Both MSI and Gigabyte are extremely big companies but they don't always compete head on in the same areas.A merger would make some sense as Gigabyte is big in the channel and retail business and at selling ATI graphics cards, MSI is an Nvidia premium partner and resells to companies including Creative. MSI is also very strong in the system integrator and OEM business, an area where Gigabyte is much weaker.

Thats a real shame. Gigabyte makes nothing but crap MBs; however, I hear good things from MSI. I dont think it'll go very well.

Uhm I contend otherwise. MSI's mobos are bad and Gigabyte's are good, but that's my experience and I don't expect anyone to take it as fact.

Perhaps Gigabyte finally got their act together, but their last KT33 board, the VRXP, was arguably the worst board---ever. It would crash if u had a GF4, Samsung RAM..pretty much even looking at the motherboard would make it crash.

[/neoquote] Well actually, Guru3d.com recently reviewed a Gigabyte mobo, and results are good. same for MSI mobo's...I still think ABIT is the best though, but maybe thats why these two want to merge?

:disappoin hey gigabyte may be not good @ amd boards but definitely one of the most reliable intel mb producer. i know that their products are no OC'er board but even with OC they're stable as rock (better than other e.g. asus) and merging with MSI is not a good idea. Until new 875p NEO series MSI boards aren't good as rivals (e.g. 2 phase power system, etc. whereas others 3)

Great, now they can make even CRAPPIER boards!

You know, I mostly try to be positive and informative with my posts here, but sometimes it gets really tiresome listening to some of you rubberheads spouting off like you actually know something. If you had a brain, you'd be incredibly embarassed by how pathetic you sound. Gigabyte makes "crap" motherboards, eh? If this is so, maybe one of you geniuses can explain how it is that Gigabyte has received 576 specific motherboard awards from virtually every computer magazine and hardware review site worthy of the name since 1999--116 of them in the first four months of this year alone? And this doesn't include frivolous awards such as "Most Colorful Motherboard" (1 award). How do I know this? I actually used my computer for something besides a gaming console and did a little research before doing my own spouting. Just for once, why don't you guys try actually using your head for something besides a hat rack? My previous comments notwithstanding, I know most of you actually do have a brain or you wouldn't be here. Try putting it in gear before engaging your keyboards. And before you turn the flame thrower back in my direction, don't just call me an idiot, tell me why I'm a idiot.

That is a load of crap. So now because a motherboard has ten billion awards its the best thing since sliced bread? I think not. I have actually USED the motherboard so I KNOW what its like. I didn't have the need to go research how many awards it got, because the truth of the matter is reviews mean nothing if it can't perom once a consumer buys it.

Uhh, Octol.... maybe I can offer a few pointers on WHY you might be an idiot... 1. NEVER ever try to rant off idiots in here... you'll never win in any cases. I agree with what you have to say, but it's rather pointless when you're batting against a group of teenagers that can't control what they're going to say in here and spewing useless and blank comments about something they don't know anything of. Save your dignity while you're ahead - I've been there before and it's no fun when you have to argue with morons with no conscience at all. 2. Just because. I have a Gigabyte mobo here and I love it, even though it's an AMD based board (7VAXP) - it has worked great for me and as I see this with the talks going on of the merger with MicroStar International, this should be better for everyone who buy motherboards from those two companies. Let's hope they officially merge sometimes in 2004, no later than 2005 (you know how long mergers do take!)
