Thanks to bryce_56 for supplying these

We've got hold of a few screenshots of the latest update to the Office 11 beta. From the screenshots below you can see there are a lot of icon improvements. It finally looks like Microsoft has decided to sort out the icon consistency in its products.

According to sources the beta update is to be released to testers soon and for download only.

We hope you like the screenshots and there should be more to follow.

Microsoft has touted Passport as a technological centerpiece in the company's Web services future. Passport accounts are central repositories for a user's online data and can include personal information such as birthdays and credit card numbers as well as acting as the single key for the user's online accounts.

Microsoft moved quickly to prevent online vandals from exploiting the issue. The advisory was posted just before 8 p.m. PDT, and by 11:30 p.m., the software giant had essentially turned off the vulnerable feature. "We have shut down all ability to reset passwords," said Sean Sundwall, spokesman for the company.

The flaw allowed a single Web address--or URL--to be used to request a password reset from the Passport servers. The URL contains the e-mail address of the account to be changed and the address where the attacker would like to have the reset message sent. By entering the single line into a Web browser an attacker can cause the Passport servers to return a link that allows an account's password to be reset. By following the link returned in the message, the attacker can change the password for the victim's account.

Danka claims to have found the issue after a friend's account had been hacked.

"Later, my friend gave the 'attacker' my passport address as a challenge, and mine was compromised as well," he wrote in the e-mail. Not long after, he figured out how the attacker had compromised the accounts.

The security consultant also said that he had repeatedly sent e-mail warnings to Microsoft's abuse and security addresses at Hotmail.com to no avail. However, he didn't send an e-mail to Microsoft's standard security contact point, secure@microsoft.com.

It wasn't clear Wednesday night whether the flaw affected all Passport accounts, or a smaller subset of accounts. Several security experts confirmed that the flaw could be exploited in the manner described by Danka.

"I tried it on my own account and I tried it on my friends' accounts, with full permission; it worked on all occasions," said Wayne Chang, a student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. "This is definitely a big security flaw."

The issue couldn't be confirmed by everyone. In some cases, security experts didn't get an e-mail back from the server.

"I just tried again, and have not yet received an e-mail with the change password link in it," Marc Slemko, a Seattle-area software engineer, wrote to CNET News.com in an e-mail. "That either means it is much slower now or has been disabled."

The engineer believed Microsoft would rally the security teams to handle the vulnerability, as the issue had enormous implications for customers.

Looks better than the ugly blue colors there used to be. Icon consistency is good, but an easier way to change them would be better. Look at how nice GNOME does its icon theme.

It still is blue if Windows XP is blue.

What's the point of showing screenshots if the stupid about screen is covering most of the screenshot? WHO CARES ABOUT THE ABOUT WINDOW??? Show us some functionality! If I wanted to see an about window, I'd go to my notepad, help, about and stare at it. The about window is completely useless, they are not screen shots, they are about shots! Show us some REAL screen shots.
#1.3 CoCoLUS on 08 May 2003 - 15:37
i guess the author of the shots just wanted to confirm the authenticity of the shots... my guess is he's used to doing shots of longhorn or xp sp2, where it's normal that people don't belive you the shots are real
#1.4 flonda on 08 May 2003 - 15:44
Well first of all, even the authenticity can be faked by anyone who knows how to use photoshop or similar program, so I feel there's really no point in seeing the about shots. However if they still feel compelled to include the about shots, perhaps they should put the about shots as seperate shots from the functionality shots. Just an idea.

[neoquote=#1.2 by flonda]The about window is completely useless, they are not screen shots, they are about shots! Show us some REAL screen shots.[/neoquote] Yea, I'm not sure if this is a step up from showing shots from installation
#1.6 flonda on 08 May 2003 - 16:15
Oh yeah, I forgot about the installation shots! I love being reminded about the endless staring at the progress bar as something I'm excited about using installs.
#1.7 chorpeac on 08 May 2003 - 20:16
Here we go again. More and more screenshots of versions and abouts. The actual product was minimized and almost covered up. Come on guys, if you are going to show credible screenshots, please show the product. The about, install, and status screens are not worth posting.
#1.8 creamhackered on 08 May 2003 - 20:32
They were the only screenshots we recieved, would you rather us not post them at all then yeh?
#1.9 flonda on 08 May 2003 - 20:51
Personally, if you're not going to show credible functionality screenshots, then I'd rather not waste my time viewing the about and install screenshots thinking they might show functionality. So yes, it would be of service, if they don't show functionality, to just not post them in the first place. BTW: LOVE the site!
#1.10 pctuk on 08 May 2003 - 21:09
Ever thought that some people might want to view the pictures? How about thinking of others?
#1.11 flonda on 08 May 2003 - 22:43
You are right, but the source should still include both the nonfunctionality pics as well as funtionality pics. That way everybody is happy.
#1.12 JaggedFlame on 08 May 2003 - 23:28
What's the new functionality? We don't even know that it exists, so how can we expect it? For all we know, it could just be bug fixes and icon updates. In that case, the screenshots show everything they can as they are.

I have been using Office 2003 for about a month now and i'm very pleased with the new features. Especially in outlook. When you recieve a mesage, the first few lines of the email fade in on the lower left corner of the desktop. From there you have the option to delete, read or mark as important. Also when you shutdown your pc, you don't get the "Please close all Microsoft Office application". The inbox is self managed, what I mean is that all the email are sorted, depending on how you want them, in the inbox itself. Then those managed email can be minimized for easier and faster retrival. When you minimise Outlook you have the option to send it to the system tray instead of the task bar. One thing I don't like is the fact that if you right click on the icon in the system tray, you can't shutdown outlook. I have already submitted this suggestion to Microsoft. As far as word and excel, well i haven't done much with them. I don't know if this feature was available in word before, but they have a reading layout that is simillar to a PDF file. They also have a plugin for PDF --> DOC and DOC --> PDF. Very resource intensive, minimum requirement 256 MB ram. It use to crash a lot, but since I have done the windows update for XP, it has been very stable.
When you recieve a mesage, the first few lines of the email fade in on the lower left corner of the desktop.
That feature isn't working too well in Beta 2. I have mine turned on, yet it still doesn't show up. Beta 1 worked fine.
#2.2 Eversurf on 08 May 2003 - 21:21
Yeah I guess I'm using Beta 1

I had to manually set one up for my IMAP account, because it was only working for the default Inbox. But now it works fine.

It's a little hard to see what Outlook looks like with the About dialog in front of it -- i'm not interested in what that looks like, I am however with the program itself...

[neoquote=#14.0 by acbd]its the first version since office95 (i think ) that has new icons i hated the old ones they arent perfect now too, but they're a lot better [/neoquote] Actually, this is incorrect. Office 95 and Office 97 shared the same icons, and Office 2000 and Office XP share the same icons. Office 2000 introduced new icons for the Office family by starting the tradition of having the program letter (or picture) identifier placed inside a colored frame. Office 95 and 97 did not have this. They looked different from this. Publisher's icon changed a lot since then. It looks like the new icons are indeed 32-bit icons created for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. They seem to be a slight update to the Office XP icons.

[neoquote=#14.2 by Hawkeye]Office 2000 introduced new icons for the Office family by starting the tradition of having the program letter (or picture) identifier placed inside a colored frame.[/neoquote] He was probably talking about the toolbar icons And actually, if i'm not wrong older versions (such as office "94" -i dont remember the version-) had some icons that were exactly the same to those of now. Office 97 (or 95?) just made the toolbars flat.
#15 reaper1576 on 08 May 2003 - 16:25
well looks like theres gonna be a new build sooner than thought
#16 Paladin732 on 08 May 2003 - 16:41
hopefully when they email that these are downloadable they will reemail the newgroup passwords, i lost mine and i have no idea how to get it back, i went to the newgroups once lol
(1 reply) #17 Zyphrax on 08 May 2003 - 16:52
The new icons are nice. But I still don't like the raised buttonbars Are they only raised when they are unlocked? And maybe with this release it WILL be possible to add 2 hotmail accounts to Outlook using 1 windows profile.
#17.1 y_notm on 08 May 2003 - 19:23
the bars can't be locked and you can have way more than 2 hotmail/msn accounts in outlook
#18 Discoradio on 08 May 2003 - 17:34
In Outlook Beta 2 I use 5 Hotmail accounts.... the wallpaper can be finded in ice plex style.
#19 pei_boy on 08 May 2003 - 18:31
Can someone "please" email me the background used on those pic's? Thanks!!! pei_boy@hotmail.com
#20 Phasma on 08 May 2003 - 21:15
the wallpaper can be finded in ice plex style.
Can you be a little bit more specific? Searching for Ice Plex here at Neowin (incl. boards) and using Google produces no results...
#21 creamhackered on 08 May 2003 - 21:20
The wallpaper is available Here
#22 Angel Blue01 on 08 May 2003 - 21:54
I like the icons! They're not as abstract as I has feared... But I can't see the toolbars... Are these any good in this build?
#23 robo555 on 08 May 2003 - 22:32
With all the things in Office 2003, all of the screenshots takes a pic of the About dialog box?? We only need to see one About box, if any
#24 Phasma on 09 May 2003 - 20:28
Thx Creamhackered for the link.
#25 wrex on 12 May 2003 - 08:44
I think people are too busy trying to prove they have the correct build number rather than showing us what the program actually looks like. Thanks for the shots anyway. I am really looking forward to Outlook though. The old icons just have to go, and I'm glad they have.
