Microsoft Corp. and Gateway Inc. have joined forces to offer MSNŽ 8 Internet Software and MSN 8 dial-up access preloaded on all Gateway consumer PCs. The relationship between the two companies makes Gateway the first computer manufacturer to offer both MSN 8 Internet Software, which can be used with any Internet service, and MSN 8 dial-up Internet access. Consumers also can sign up at Gateway stores to receive a CD to download the software, which includes advanced communications, browsing and enhanced online safety features.

"The boom in broadband Internet usage increases the need for software that allows consumers to more easily and effectively communicate, browse and help protect their PCs and families while online," said Richard Bray, vice president of MSN. "We teamed up with Gateway, a company that consumers trust and appreciate, because it can help us reach and demonstrate to millions of consumers that there is a better way to get more from their high-speed connection: It's via MSN 8."

This might not have been the right time for Gateway or Micro$oft to mention this, in the midst of their (MS) blunder and potential class-action lawsuit against them and Worst Buy.

Many retailers already do this. Best Buy for example tries to push a MSN subscription with every purchase and throw in a MSN CD with purchases. (There's actually a class action lawsuit against Best Buy right now for pushing the subscription a little too hard--like by not telling the customer they were purchasing a subscription).

This is so true i work for best buy and i hate the place (i work in the comp department) i think it suck show they push us so hard for it and that almost 90% of the people dont even want it

FWIW...Best Buy is by far the best in the "industry" at selling those type of come-ons to consumers. For Microsoft, so far, Best Buy has been an indispensable partner. From what I have read of this particular case, it seems this employee was simply sloppy. I hope this employee got his legal breaks when it is required by law...if he claims he was tired cuz he didn't get a break...utoh for Best Buy.
