Software giant Microsoft is planning to set up a global product support services centre in India's technology hub of Bangalore.

The centre, which will employ 100 software professionals initially, is part of the $US400 million investment announced by Microsoft chief Bill Gates during his visit to India last November.

Rajiv Kaul, managing director of Microsoft India, said: "Microsoft product support services support 54 million customers globally on an annual basis."

"In order to continue its efforts ... Microsoft is announcing a pilot programme in Bangalore to support select Microsoft professional products," Mr Kaul said.

About 250 additional software engineers from Microsoft partner firms such as Infosys Technologies, Wipro Limited and Tata Consultancy Services will also work with the professionals in the centre.

Mr Kaul said Microsoft is also ramping up its development centre in the neighbouring state of Andhra Pradesh's capital Hyderabad.

Microsoft will employ 300 new professionals and build a $US100 million campus in Hyderabad.

- Please understand that this is still beta stage software and it's only meant for testing purposes.

Oh jeezus... as if it wasn't hard enough trying to decipher an indian accent from an American office...

How about we send every job to India that the US has to offer so this country can be completely unemployed. Man, it seems like the latest trend is to send all the work there to get off cheap. I know of so many companies that are doing this. *sigh*

For some reason this didnt show on the frontpage for me so accidentally duped it in BPM - oops. Anyway, if you're in outsourced tech support for MS better start checking out the job market!

I actually one of those targeted by this move. Recently, we moved our Windows 2000 Server support over to India (Professional Support only). From what I've seen, they have not been supporting the product that well (I would DEMAND to speak with an American employee if I had to call in at this time.). However, they are just learning the ropes, so they might actually turn out to be good. Their accents (for the most part) are not that bad. I have to speak REALLY slow when training them to take over my job. However, I find it highly amusing/concerning that Microsoft would deliver such high end support to IT professionals who are losing there jobs to India. This is pretty much as unbiased as I can make this post. I am very upset about this trend to export IT (and other professional) jobs to other countries. For IT companies, it really doesn't boost the bottom line to outsource to a another country if a majority of your revenue is coming from your own country. Who the hell is going to buy your products if they are not employed? (rational comment - please excuse).

If the trend continues then I will also be affected tho not for a year at least I shoudl imagine. Will have to make sure I get my Win2K3 MCSE done before then.
