Advertisement (Why?)
Continuing our Exclusive coverage of MSN Messenger 6.0 we bring you new screenshots of every single new feature in MSN Messenger 6.0. We got our grubby hands on a copy and have had the chance to play around with it and get well acquainted with everything new.

Here's what we have found out:
• XML Chat Logging
• Individual chat backgrounds for each contact
• Array of display pictures for "My Display Picture"
• File sending improved
• Availability of Virus scanning for recieved files
• New file transfer interface
• And even more emoticons!

All in all this MSN Messenger is a great improvement from MSN Messenger 5 and previous versions. The interface is clean and yet allows customization per contact, the audio/video capabilities and file sends are the best yet in any Messenger version I have used - allowing the user to not worry about XP's or even Windows Server 2003's inbuilt firewall. The only thing we were unable to test was the games side of this new Messenger, we recieve an error message when trying to start a game - obviously the servers aren't ready yet.

Although we're not sure on when MSN will launch their preview site for Messenger 6.0 we've taken every screenshot we thought was worth taking and now you can see exactly what MSN Messenger 6 will look like and function. Enjoy.

I'm in luv too, there are so many new features in this new version, that staying with MSN Messenger 4 or 5 would probably make it hard to communicate with MSN6 users This certainly is making such a bigger gap between Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger, the problem is that half use WM and half use MSN Messenger, so it's just deviding the users into two services (so now there's MSN Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, ICQ Messenger, Yahoo Messenger and Windows Messenger), I'm not quite sure how to explain what I mean right... kindof like MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger are no longer the same thing Of course I would like MSN Messenger to be like this, and then Windows Messenger would be the lightweight version of MSN Messenger, w/o skins and other useless features. For those who want leaks, I'm sure the beta testing program will start in a few weeks so I can wait And I have a question for creameister, does this work on longhorn?

Me wants...(drooling) What really interests me is how well it integrates (or doesn't) with Windows Messenger...(we all know how crappy the integration between MSN Mess. 5 and Windows Mess. is). Creamhackered - can you share your experience with this issue & the new version? Many thanks!

#17.2 slang123 on 21 May 2003 - 14:46
I thought this initially with the interface of msn messenger 5, but its not that bloated. i never thought i see a messenger like this from microsoft, its actually a response to what people want and im very impressed

Man one thing that is missing from MSN, Windows Msgr, MSN Plus is the ability to show timestamps... Im sure its not that hard a bloody task to make. And anyone who uses IRC would surely appreciate them.
#21 Dark Vageta on 21 May 2003 - 14:44
SCREW THEW SCREENE SHOTS WHERE CAN WE DOWNLOAD !!!
#22 Relativity_17 on 21 May 2003 - 14:48
I don't think these new features make it all that. First, buddy icons are already present in AIM... New emoticons...blah, who really uses all the ones that are already present? There aren't any real good features added, especially not custom away messages/statuses, and people have been requesting those for years. So all in all, it looks nice, and you'll love it for a week before it gets annoying.
#23 kljs on 21 May 2003 - 14:51
now all we need is to wait for a download link....

And people have the nerve to say ICQ is bloated, lol.
#33.1 Daffy_Duck on 21 May 2003 - 16:25
How can you speak about software you have only seen screenshots of? I like ICQ but it is bloated. We will just have to try this one to see if it feels slow.
#33.2 net-cruizer on 21 May 2003 - 16:46
Hmmm, I never said anything about MSN Messenger 6 being bloated at all, lol. All it's features seem pretty cool going by the screenshots. But right now I'm liking Windows Messenger 5 and Microsoft Portrait.

Creamhackered ? from where did you get it ? i mean you work at microsoft ?
(1 reply) #46 supreme_fool on 21 May 2003 - 16:59
Will anyone actually ever use the Umbrella emoticon? Or the Pizza one? or that illedgable black square that follows the Umbrella? They really are about as pointless as the (~) filmstrip emoticon that is underused now. MSN should wake up and add more face emoticons. I mean, if the Neowin board can have groovy emoticons like and Then why can't a big company like Microsoft get some decent ones?
#46.1 Phoenix_25 on 21 May 2003 - 17:13

I can still think of things I want that it doesn't offer...some have been said here in the comments already. 1) Timestamps. Maybe it does offer it and creamy didn't have it enabled in the shots. Who knows? I just sorta doubt it. But they're such useful little things, especially when, you know, you're away. 2) Custom aways. Not sure if it really doesn't have this, but someone else mentioned it, and if it doesn't, then I agree that it should have it. 3) Enough with the website-oriented profiles already. They suck. I don't need a full browser window loading just to read someone's profile. This also means you need to load the browser to edit your profile. I think AIM still beats all the competition in this department. 4) Those buddy icons ("Display Pictures", pfff, hehe) take up a lot of space in the interface. My own icon doesn't need to be shown at all times. Is it hideable? I'd like the conversation box to take up the full width of the window whenever possible. Saves desktop space while requiring me to scroll less in the event of a conversation more eloquent than WTF LOL AHAHA WORD. And I think that's about it. My only impossible gripe about Messenger is how much I hate the custom screennames people use. Crap like /~~~~~~~~~~~--==XaViErInDaHaUs==--~~~~~~~~~~ pisses me off to no end. Not to mention, they're called screennames, not screensentences. I don't need to see what your plans are for the weekend in my buddylist window.

#51 AshUK on 21 May 2003 - 17:32
Bye bye Messenger Plus! I only used it for chat logging anyways...
#52 vetToxicfume on 21 May 2003 - 18:00
These are the features I have always wanted: 1) Signing in with different statuses, not only online. Eg, logging in with Away mode already on. 2) Editable nicknames for contacts, so you can put in like a small name or a keyword that can help you remember 2 or more people who happen to have the same nick, etc.
