'Star Wars Kid' Gets Bucks From Blogs

A couple of webloggers are raising money for an unfortunate teenager humiliated worldwide after a private video of his energetic lightsaber moves was leaked to the Net.

Webloggers Andy Baio and Jish Mukerji launched a fundraiser Friday for the young man they call the "Star Wars Kid," whose home video has been downloaded millions of times and watched by people all over the world.

The video shows a lone, overweight teenager fighting a mock battle with a broomstick lightsaber. In the two-minute video, the teenager twirls the broomstick ever more energetically while generating his own lightsaber sound effects. The video, which is obviously not for public consumption, is amusing and excruciating.

Baio and Mukerji, who linked to their video from their weblogs, identify the Star Wars Kid as a 15-year-old French Canadian named Ghyslain. Because Ghyslain is a minor, the pair is protecting his identity. Ghyslain couldn't be reached for comment.

By Friday afternoon, the webloggers' fund had received more than 100 individual donations totaling nearly $1,000. The pair also has received donations of software and a T-shirt. They plan to buy Ghyslain an Apple iPod and some accessories.

CAUGHT OFF GUARD

The International Federation of Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the global trade organization that represents the music industry, was caught off guard by the launch. An IFPI spokesman said they were reviewing the site, but had not decided if they would be taking action against it.

Puretunes will sell subscriptions allowing consumers to download songs by virtue of licensing agreements it has struck with various Spanish trade associations that represent performers and recording artists.

Puretunes will compensate the artists and labels from subscription proceeds, Siguenza said.

The site carries thousands of songs from Madonna to the Beatles. Consumers can download songs in hourly blocks.

Eight hours of downloads cost $3.99 while unlimited downloads for a month cost $24.99, a steep discount from industry-sanctioned services such as Pressplay and those operated by Britain's OD2.

Siguenza said the new service does not need individual authorization from the major music labels, a point the industry is likely to contest as they have insisted Web sites wanting to sell downloads secure the appropriate licensing contracts.

In fact, a number of labels have sued another Spanish firm, Weblisten.com, that has been selling music online.

Adding to the intrigue, Puretunes has signed Grokster, the free file-swapping network that won a recent U.S. legal decision against the music labels, as a marketing partner. Grokster will get a cut of sales leads it brings to Puretunes.

"We've been doing everything we can to sell authorized music and basically this has been our only option," said Wayne Rosso, president of Grokster. "We're out to prove a point: we can sell the music."

The moral of this story: don't make any pictures/videos that you wouldn't want other people to see

Why? He is getting free money and an iPod

LMAO, note to all: If you want to act like an idiot who can twirl a broomstick with th most intense constipation-esque expression on your ace... then dont film it

wasnt that funny. whats the big fuss about?
(1 reply) #7 Xab on 21 May 2003 - 01:55
um, really this is just weird to me. Ok so he embarrassed himself, but from the conversation and such it doesn't sound like hes too upset. On that transcript it says hes interested about all the popularity surrounding his movie. I don't know it just doesn't seem like this makes much sense. He could have just as easily put it online himself, and what is money going to fix? Just seems pointless to me.

echo that. he will probably be on another retarded mtv series next.
#8 robbear7 on 21 May 2003 - 02:19
Let me just say this is one of the funniest dang video's I've seen. I was casually eating pizza at my computer when the video started and nearly choked on it. Not thinking it could be even funnier, the remix made me double my laughter. I'd feel guilty, but the boy is getting a new Ipod and $1,000 for the ordeal, wiping away all guilt on my end. Funny.... still laughing.
#9 Scorpio on 21 May 2003 - 02:24
I don't think it's funny at all. Humilation isn't something anyone ever wants to go through, especially on a global level. It's good to see that some people have a shread of humanity, however, in that they're at least trying to give this kid something in return for the humilation he's encountered.

heh I was wondering what that was.. feel sorry for the kid but seriously how did it get leaked!??
#10.1 robbear7 on 21 May 2003 - 03:05
Check out http://www.waxy.org/ to get the full scoop on how the video was leaked as well as an interview with the boy.
#11 s0ldats on 21 May 2003 - 03:17
well i'm glad the kid is getting the recognition he deserves... that video was never meant for anyone else to see. good to see that he's getting paid for it.
#12 Reapah on 21 May 2003 - 03:25
brb, I'm going to go get naked, play Star Wars and prodeed to post it on the net.
#13 NeoMayhem on 21 May 2003 - 03:27
LOL, there are some pretty funny things I have found on tapes in our schools studio, some of them I helped make I think I am going to leak them onto kazaa so my friends get free ipods
#14 Spike101M69 on 21 May 2003 - 03:28
it all depends if ure easily embarresed . . i'd make a video lyke that cause i don't mind making an ass of myself . . for ipods or no ipods ... .
#15 NeoMayhem on 21 May 2003 - 03:36
How did they add the star wars effects in to the remix? I want to know howto do that
#16 King_John on 21 May 2003 - 03:54
They have $4000, and I'm sure it will be near $6000 by tomorrow.
#17 vetmalebolgia on 21 May 2003 - 03:55
I must admit I feel sorry for this kid a little bit, but the remix is just so funny. Funny thing is my friend and I experimented with the lightsaber technique a few years back. All I can say about that experiment is that PVC pipes sure do break easy. In answer to NeoMayhems question the technique to do the Star Wars lightsaber effect is called rotoscoping. Here is a link for anyone else who wants to learn about it click here.
#18 Scorched on 21 May 2003 - 04:08
I think it's getting blown way out of proportion. I have no problem with him getting money and an iPod, but the video wasn't that embarrassing. Of course the countless insults on weblogs and boards is another story.
#19 drewster2100 on 21 May 2003 - 04:51
what?! that was my video, now wheres MY ipod and ibook with the 3900 raised??

wtf? why are ppl giving this kid money and things? there are much more worthy causes to give ur money to then some stupid kid who twirrled a broomstic in a video imo

[neoquote=#20.0 by Ji@nBing] wtf? why are ppl giving this kid money and things? there are much more worthy causes to give ur money to then some stupid kid who twirrled a broomstic in a video imo[/neoquote] Exactly my opinion. Who cares if he gets humiliated - I did all throughout gradeschool because I hit puberty faster than others. Should I collect $1K and a new Ipod for that? No. If his lard ass is so humiliated tell him not to make videos and put them on the Internet. What would have been worse is if he was in his underwear...now think of that I've seen stuff like this happen before...in 3 days noone will remember this kid.

Give the *kid* a break, ILM has seen this and uncle George might contact him. He's a lonely puter geek who got shoved into the spotlight not by his doing, at least he's not in some thread ripping someone else apart.

"The kid was humiliated by a video, and now people are trying to make him feel better. Here's a link to see the video for yourself!" Ah, reality.
#28.1 JaggedFlame on 21 May 2003 - 13:55
Looking at his interview, it doesn't look like he's humiliated or embarrassed at all.
#28.2 Joshie on 21 May 2003 - 20:33
No no, I agree. I'm just saying, that's what the article looks like it's saying. Pity him, now laugh at him! Yanno?

I never laughed when I watched either the original or remix video. It just wasn't funny to me.
#33 Groovedude on 21 May 2003 - 09:57
heard about this a while ago on local news lol
#34 ComaBlack on 21 May 2003 - 10:43
We came across this video about a week or so ago and I don't know about you guys but the general consensus shared amongst me and the other guys in the office is that this kid is a God! We have never laughed harder in our lives. He should be given the cash as a prize, not to make him feel better. Star Wars kid is a champion.
#35 MikeStammer on 21 May 2003 - 12:06
First of all, the kid on the video didnt add the effects. Someone else did after the fact. The first version was just him jumping around all crazy. Someone else then added the saber and intro stuff. The site where I got it from is http://www.waxy.org; it has the whole story and both versions, which I DLed and watched. Check it out!

#37 bangbang023 on 21 May 2003 - 15:59
it was leaked to the web by kids trying ot make an ass out of him. he never intended for it to be put out and have millions of people laughing at him. i'm sure you guys have all been in spots where you've been ultra embarassed by a few people, never mind millions.
#38 chorpeac on 21 May 2003 - 18:20
Ok I just saw this....this is hilarious. I had 5 officemates in here who all like Star Wars and we were all rolling. The funny thing is that I think we can all connect this to something we have all done before....practicing the saber battles..
#39 paustin on 21 May 2003 - 18:27
hey if Lucas can sneak NSYNC or Backstreet Boys (lol i forgot who it was) into the background as jedi's....he should throw this kid in the background in the next crappy star wars film and make his pals that posted it all jealous. Hell ill admit it , to this day, just about every time I get into an elevator alone i say "Bridge"
#40 djlethal01 on 21 May 2003 - 19:48
WTH? If i do something embrassing in a public place people wont start giving me money to wash away the pain, on the other hand you gotta feel kinda sad for him.
#41 vetmalebolgia on 21 May 2003 - 22:36
Now if you want to see a good fan Star Wars flick check out Duality.
#42 DrunkenMaster on 22 May 2003 - 00:30
Oh... that's so kind. To save from him from the embarassment they're offering him money. Meanwhile, a news release on Wired has been publised to advertise to all Wired readers that some kid recorded an embarring video with a link to download it. How I love the media. This will probably make it into the Reuter's database to boot. He'll probably end up in some newspapers. Brilliant. Sorry for the bold. Just making my point clear.
