The next update to Norton Anti-Virus 2003 has begun external beta testing this week. Beta testers are slowly recieving their copies of NAV2004. And from the various options displayed in our screenshots it looks as though Symantec have noted that adware and spyware do pose as a threat to computer users. Additional threats such as Dialer.exe programs, remote access tools and joke programs have also been identified and combated by NAV2004.

Thanks to JnCoKiLLa we've managed to take a sneak peek at Symantecs up and coming NAV2004. The most obvious changes are noted above but currently there is no support for MSN Messenger 6. Maybe Symantec will keep up to date and update it's client during the beta phase to ammend this.

Interestingly for all, Symantec are adding "Product Activation" to NAV2004. Some might say too little too late but it seems one of the top anti-virus companies is following in the path of Microsoft. Expect a lot of software to follow this step from now on.

Enjoy the NAV2004 screenshots and don't expect the interface to change too much from now and when it's released later this year.

lol that auto-run made me laugh..
If thats the real picture from the beta... even Microsoft spend time on making everything look professional for abeta, not just cross out XP and write Longhorn on top

Check out the 3 degrees installer then

They all do it for beta applications @ some point

Its not actually a beta too. Even though its meant to stay inside MS, it looks nice.

Quote this comment #11.1 Posted by daveoc64 on 27 May 2003 - 18:20
2003 has activation in it too!
Quote this comment #11.2 Posted by jkuy9 on 27 May 2003 - 18:50
no it doesnt. It has registration not activation. Until now Symantec has not had any anti-piracy measures in its consumer software.

Do they need release one every year? Or is this a money grab.

HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO USE A WAREZ'D COPY IF IT NEEDS ACTIVATION. STUPID INSENSITIVE SYMANTEC

Haha.. I love that AutoRun screen hahha.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #15 Posted by rseiler on 27 May 2003 - 18:09
Folks, uh, that AutoRun casualness is something you see in the first beta...maybe subsequent betas, but obviously not the final product. It's sometimes done in betas when work on the trivial stuff like opening graphics hasn't been done yet in favor of working on the guts of the program first.

i Think everyone is aware that its only temporary however it would take like 1 minute to use photoshop to change the 3 to 4 believably.

Great ... one of the world's worst virus scanners NOW WITH PRODUCT ACTIVATION ´

I'll never let this crappy software on my computer again ...
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by Night Prowler on 27 May 2003 - 21:26
Why would make comment like that? If you were driving a SL450 and I made a comment hat the SL40 was the worlds worst car then you would want to know why, especially if you've had owned it for several years and have had absolutely no problems with it. You might think I'm some sort of idiot for stating that.
Quote this comment #17.2 Posted by Dale on 28 May 2003 - 01:33
if its sooo bad.. why do you bother to even get it?... lol..
Quote this comment #17.3 Posted by kirupa on 28 May 2003 - 13:45
I have used NAV for a few years now, and I'm not having too many problems with it. It's personal preference really. Although numerous computing magazines rate NAV toward the top.

ggyy, i hate product activation...
is there a volume licence copy?
but i guess not cuz they got coporate version but corporate version always gives me problem

Go here for a newer version of your detection engine!

NAV gets worse every year
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #21 Posted by mipra on 27 May 2003 - 21:40
hmm..I dont see anything new in the interface itself...anything new in the engine?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #22 Posted by Pzaga on 27 May 2003 - 21:59
That auto-run screenie is just hilarious.

I don't think there's anything new in the engine, probably just tweaks and fixes.
(1 reply) Quote this comment Reply to this comment #23 Posted by DrunkenMaster on 28 May 2003 - 01:01
LOL. I'm still using the 2002 I bought. Unintstall and re-install. Then the registration gets extended. Mine expires in Mid-2004. What do I care... I get the AV updates. I don't care about the updated anti-virus engine which will probably run slower anyways.

Vader76> Its both and update AND a money grab IMO. The interface doesn't change so noobs don't revolt. As I said above, people get suckered into buying new versions because the "license expired". That's what the activation is for I guess. Forces more people to upgade the program EVERY year.
Quote this comment #23.1 Posted by ben_b on 28 May 2003 - 02:04
Thanks for that little tip. I will be having to do that oh about mid summer when my subscription runs out. I think that I will be buying the 2004 version when it comes out though, or maybe I'll wait tell 2005 or 2006 version so I can run it on longhorn and their bond to add some stuff with a new operating system out.
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #24 Posted by Dale on 28 May 2003 - 01:23
i think that the Spyware Scanning will be useful.. i hope they will make it easier to patch the MSN Messenger Scanning.. so they can update it when there is a new version of MSN Messenger

and of course there isn't anything "that new" its in beta testing lol
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #25 Posted by Quick Reply on 28 May 2003 - 03:49
I'm LMFAO at that autorun screen.

I'm really glad that Symantec is introducing new features, but that interface is horrid! Apart from my personal dislike of skins, they shouldn't be using IE to display it's interface because it makes it so slooooow!

And please stop whining about activation, for god sakes, you've got to be pretty stupid to warez an antivirus, because a virus could be included in the iso for all you know

Go for the corporate version. No activation, no subscriptions.
Quote this comment #28.1 Posted by rseiler on 29 May 2003 - 06:30
Not for home/standalone machines you shouldn't. It's several generations behind; it doesn't even handle email!
Quote this comment #28.2 Posted by wd40 on 02 Jul 2003 - 05:00
Corp version is way better than that cheesy home edition. Who cares about e-mail thing. Corp will catch anything. That's just a "feature" of the home edition to make it more appealing to home users. So should all companies use the home version for their computers because of the email "feature"? Don't think so.

Where can I sign up for this Beta testing?
Quote this comment Reply to this comment #30 Posted by Webgraph on 29 May 2003 - 01:12
Not the activation crap! Damn that Microsoft and their ideas! Also, when will they ever consider protecting ICQ against these attacks. If you're a Symantec beta tester, please tell them to implement ICQ protection because ICQ's the most popular IM program out there!

Just tried to download the latest beta, but Symantec has closed the beta run. I'll guess it hits the streets soon... does anybody know?
