Seagate denies Taiwan hard drive recall claims

Seagate today damned as "inaccurate" a report that the company has begun taking dodgy 40GB and 80GB hard drives off Taiwanese distributors' shelves - a move alleged to be taking place by local channel sources. The report, published by DigiTimes yesterday, alleges that 12,000-15,000 defective drives, produced in mainland China, have been shipped to Taiwan with an unknown number shipping to other locations around the world.

However, a Seagate spokesman said there was no substance to the claims. The manufacturer isn't recalling 40GB and 80GB hard drives - or any other for that matter. "It's ridiculous to claim that all the four major hard drive vendors have been hit by the same problem," he said. In fact, only three of the four - Seagate, Maxtor and Hitachi Global Storage - were alleged to have been hit. The fourth, Western Digital, was said to be unaffected by the problem since it doesn't manufacture drives on mainland China - its manufacturing facilities are located in Malaysia and Thailand.

Very true, I have no idea, I just know about the Seagate side... (and yes Seagate Sucks, hate Seagate too, but they pay the bills )

In October 2002 a bought a 40Gb Seagate HD, 3 months later... Surprise!!!
BAD SECTORS! Returned the HD to shop.

After 4 Months I received a NEW HD! Guess what??? BAD SECTORS too!

Not only their Hardware is crap as well as their Software (Seatools) and Tech Support.

I was trying to diagnose the new HD, then I looked after their diagnose software, Seatools. It's available in 2 forms, Internet Explorer plugin or Standalone. Guess what? The Online version didn't worked with my IE6 and the Standalone version only runs if you have a floppy drive to generate a boot disc. I don't have/use a floppy drive since 2000.

Guess what? Their technical support is too stupid and couldn't do nothing in order to help me run their software. I asked if they could send me the files generated in the boot disc and they said: The diagnostic tools will only run from a floppy, there's no other way!

I asked for a friend to run their lousy Seatools, generate the floppy boot disc and send me the files. Guess what? I've booted from CD, ran their software and it WORKED. AMAZING.

I don't know what's worse, Seagate's Hardware or Technical Support!

Adding more proofs: This the e-mail i sent requesting support and their brilliant answers!

One way of solve this issue could be the following: YOU run the seatools
desktop version, let the software copy the required files to the floppy
and send me this files ziped to my e-mail address. Following this
directions i'll be able to boot via cd-rom and run the required files to
check my hard disk!
 
BTW, if there's any other way of troubleshoot the seatools online version,
keep me informed. I've just uninstalled it, rebooted, installed it again,
but it keeps crashing Internet Explorer.

drive into the system longer enough to run the test.

Ouch!

And here I thought I was alone in detesting Seagate Drives! As a PC Technician, I can tell you from personal experience that I've REPLACED a lot of them!

I have never had a problem with any Seagate or other brand drive that I personally have bought that were brand new. Ive got alot of drives that were owned by other people that just ended up being door stops or paperweights.

The irony for me is that I have never had these kinds of issues with Seagate, or their support. Actually, I've never had to contact Seagate Support because their drives have consistently performed better than expected. Rather, I've experienced some of this same crap with Western Digital. With regards to WD's tech support though, I've had nothing but very positive experiences. I've had issues with WD's drives, but at least their support has been great. Hard drives are immensely delicate and complicated components.. I'm honestly not surprised when one fails. It's very difficult to mass produce this exceedingly sensitive device and get it right 100% of the time.

I have a 2,5GB seagate drive from 1997 on my old P233MMX, still works today flawlessly

I have 2x Seagate 40GB HDs in my computer with no problems
