If AOL Time Warner and rival Microsoft agree to collaborate, instant messaging services could see a boom -- especially within businesses, analysts say. As part of last week's broad anti-trust litigation settlement, the two rivals agreed to discuss making their messaging systems work together. The talks would come after a long, bitter fight to make AOL open its system to instant messengers using competing services, such as Microsoft's MSN.

AOL is home to the majority of those who use instant messaging, which enables real-time chats online, and is the leading player in the arena. Urging AOL to open up Its rivals, including Microsoft's MSN and Yahoo, have been clamoring for AOL to open up its system so their users can communicate with those using AOL services ICQ and AIM. But AOL's efforts to let rivals' users communicate with those using its services has stalled and the company has cited security issues and market conditions among other issues.

During first stage of V5 beta, we will be concentrating on two major issues:
WU Web Site beta testing - including gross and detailed site functionality, site UI, and site text
  1. WU content Beta testing - all content delivered through the WU site (with the exception of Security Updates, there is another channel for those) will have a specific beta release/test period. This includes driver update content.
  2. After the initial beta period, the WU V5beta program will continue to be involved in Beta update testing of software and driver content prior to their RTW ('going live') on the v5 site.
  3. Platform - current plans for V5 Beta are that all beta testers will require a platform of windows 2000 SP2 and later, for a testing platform.
  4. No one in either WU Beta or Office Beta groups have been enrolled in the V5 beta program, yet.
Neowin Note: This is probably the reason for the previous questionnaire on betaplace asking "Which Operating systems do you want to see on Windows Update" so if you haven't completed the questionnaire yet now might be a good time to do so.

I agree. This doesn't mean anything.

Uhh, it sure does, when AOL's past history has been simply blocking off all external access to their networks.

Remember when MSN Messenger was made to "hack" into AOL IM network.
It was even on the news (BBC UK)!

now it's all different...

I dont think that they should do this... in my eyes, I use AOL for random people i dont really know and just to meet new people, and MSN Messenger for people I actually know face-to-face in my town to arrange stuff.

Why link them together?!
#3.1 Zeni on 05 Jun 2003 - 17:04
Exactly what I do, I use AIM for people from IRC I've met online over the years, and MSN for personal friends, I don't think you should be able to cross message as such, but rather just give the option to use both services under whichever program you prefer. ( Which is why I use Gaim.... I can't stand Trillian. )

would be cool to have any client you want work with any and all the services, would save time and plus you could get a decent im app out of it

Have you seen Trillin Pro?
#4.2 Timan on 04 Jun 2003 - 23:09
I said decent yea not a big fan of trillian just felt cheap for some reason, its prob cause of its skinning engine
#4.3 antareus on 05 Jun 2003 - 01:15
Haha, I hear that, I'm working on my own, open source client.

Despite my hatred towards Microsoft products, I hope that this will work so I can contact those who use only MSN Messenger or Yahoo. Also, how do I merge my ICQ and AIM accounts?
#5.1 JaggedFlame on 05 Jun 2003 - 00:00
You hold feelings of hate towards software products? Pathetic.
#6 JustinSaneLBS on 04 Jun 2003 - 22:59
I'm actually looking forward to this. I'm using AIM right now because all my friends use it. But, if this works out, I'm going to MSN
#7 Nidonocu on 04 Jun 2003 - 23:53
If it does happen, Trillian are going to have to do something specail to keep people using their client. Though I would cause Pro is just so darn cool.

Well I hope when they say AOL, they mean ICQ too, cuz alot of people I know use ICQ instead of MSN and AOL, well not really "instead", more like thats all there was at one time and they haven't switched to any thing else, lol, and I have to try and convince them to get MSN Messenger too. ICQ probably has more users than MSN and AOL put together anyways.
#8.1 Avenger on 05 Jun 2003 - 02:41
Umm, did you miss the part where it said "ICQ and AIM" in the 2nd to last paragraph? Check it out.
#8.2 net-cruizer on 05 Jun 2003 - 03:40
Oops, didn't notice. Thanx for gettin me to look. I did think that it would include both though, seeing is that any other messenger that connects to AOL has both AOL and ICQ together. Well thats cool, hopefully it does happen.
#9 jivemastert on 05 Jun 2003 - 04:27
blah, now maybe msnm and aim can join together and crash more than they already do. on the other hand... two wrongs might make a right?
#10 Ibrim on 05 Jun 2003 - 05:38
Done before. The early versions of msn messenger used to connect to aim. (msn messenger 1.0)

Sounds like Microsoft wants to consider reversing a very old decision to cut out aol, it made when msn messenger 2.0 was first released.

#11.1 antareus on 05 Jun 2003 - 13:26
Okay, how about the fact it has nonnative GUI?
#11.2 Zeni on 05 Jun 2003 - 17:06
If you're worried about that crap use Trillian, personally if it works and includes all it's parts features, and does it efficiently, then I don't worry about looks. Gaim > Trillian.
#11.3 antareus on 05 Jun 2003 - 22:38
Nonnative, as in not-matching the Windows GUI.

Trillian doesn't either with its subpar skins. And I'm not going to pay for an IM client.
#11.4 Zeni on 06 Jun 2003 - 00:32
Trillian has plenty of halfway decent looking skins for matching, but overall they're more of a hinderence than a help. If it's that important to you make your own. O_o
