Microsoft is planning to sell new software to cable TV companies in an effort to gain a stronger foothold in the industry.

The company's chairman and founder, Bill Gates, is expected to unveil the software at an annual US cable industry meeting on Monday.

The new package, called Microsoft TV Foundation, is designed to make it easier for cable customers to access videos and other services on demand.

"This is a big milestone for Microsoft TV," said Ed Graczyk, marketing director of the group's TV division.

"We're hoping this is an announcement that gets the industry excited."

This is not the first time Microsoft has tried to make an impact in cable TV.

It invested $5bn (£3bn) in AT&T Broadband in 1999 and was planning to install its software in AT&T's next-generation cable boxes.

The BSOD joke isn't funny anymore.

With 2000 and XP they are a very minor occurance (user dependant).

Well, I smell another Industry that M$ will be dominated by...

Ex:
In Gaming they were crushed by Sony
In Internet they are being crushed by AOL
In...

No need to continue :p

You have a point there.

But what you miss is that MS enters the market late but they are very stubborn, and they do not give up easily. They keep going till they get what they want. MSN forexample is doing far better, say, compared to two years ago. Sure you know the story about Netscape.

No, what he misses is that they are profitable in those areas.

Comming out next from Microsoft, cars. Except these cars are special, they stall on highways and the airbags blow at and random time. In all honesty though, i hope their venture into television goes well for them

than, they'll buy cable stations
