DELL and Hewlett-Packard have agreed to load Sun Microsystems' version of Java on their new PCs.

It's a significant boost to Java, which Sun developed as an environment that can run programs regardless of the underlying operating system.
In the past, most PCs shipped with Microsoft's version, which was built into Windows. Sun claimed the Microsoft version of Java was altered to ensure that it did not threaten the software giant's operating system monopoly.

Sun and Microsoft have been squabbling for years over the technology, including Sun's ongoing private antitrust lawsuit. In December 2002, a US federal judge ordered Microsoft include Sun's Java in Windows. The software giant is appealing.

Sun is now assured that Dell and HP computers will have the most up-to-date Sun-sanctioned version of the software without having to download it directly from Sun.

Both companies are expected to start shipping PCs with Sun's version later this year. Financial details were not disclosed.

AdBlock
"AdBlock allows the user to specify a number of filters, which removes unwanted images based on their address. Filters are specified using the wildcard character (*) or regular expressions. Thus, it's possible to control in some detail what is displayed. Upon loading a page, AdBlock will scan through it and remove or hide the elements that matches the filters entered by the user. It doesn't prevent content from being downloaded, merely from being displayed. It's capable of removing both images and Flash animations."

The fact that it still downloads them makes ya feel a little less guilty :)

Autoscroll

"AutoScroll is an addon for Firebird that emulates the autoscrolling functionality of Internet Explorer. For those unfamiliar with this, when you middle click on a page (typically by clicking a mouse wheel button) you can then move the mouse up and down to have the page scroll by you without further mouse movements."

An invaluable feature.

LiveHTTPHeaders

"This developer oriented extension is to add information about the HTTP headers. More information on the project homepage."

Not invaluable, but a cool and useful tool for web gurus.

Popup ALT Attribute

"This extension displays the alt property of images as a tooltip, like Internet Explorer and Netscape 4.x does. "

Mycroft

"This is a very powerful collection of extensions that allow you to add search engines to the Search bar in Firebird. To install a new search engine, go to the Download page and enter the Site Name (e.g. altavista, dictionary, etc.) and press Search. A list of matches should appear. Click on the one you want and that search engine should now be added to the list of available search engines in the Firebird Search bar!"

This is just super- a collection of adins that add extra search options to the search box in the top right.

User Agent Switcher

"This extension adds a menu to switch the user agent of the browser. It is designed to provide functionality similar to the "Browser Identification" feature of Opera."

Very very useful, allowing you to view sites deemed good enough only for IE :D.

Web Developer

"The Web Developer extension for Mozilla Firebird adds a menu and a toolbar to the browser with various web developer tools." (ed - view his site for the full list- there are loads of things.)

One of my favorite tools, enabling a plethora of extra Web Developer functions.

lol just think of hearing a news like this, "Warez scene is to include Sun's Java in to it's releaze of Windows XP Corp" do you think it will stop people from getting warez soft?

This is bull. Sun make me sick, MS shouldn't have to be forced to include it, they should be made to remove their own JVM and offer it for download, that way the consumer decides because as it is Sun now have a monopoly on it. Pathetic.

Microsoft didn't get sued and forced to stop the development of their VM just because it wasn't made by SUN. There are many alternative Java VMs out there, and SUN doesn't care one bit, in fact they certify the ones that are shown to be compliant. First, Microsoft used the "Pure Java" logo, that is part of the SUN Java certification process. That logo is able to be used for certified Java VM that truely are pure Java. Would you be crying if SUN used Microsoft's Windows Media logos that are allowed to be used for applications that fully support Windows Media, when it doesn't truely support Windows Media and had no permision to do so? Secondly, Microsoft added Windows-only extensions to their Java VM. This had the potential of poluting the Java market with Windows-only Java programs. That totally goes against Java's "Write once, run anywhere" sentiment. This was a direct attack against SUN. Would you cry if SUN started releasing a Windows Media encoder that encoded the files in such a way that you can only play the movies/audio files on a SUN Solaris operating system? How about if they used the Windows Media logo without permision on top of it to make unsuspecting users think they are making 'normal'/compatible Windows Media files? Microsoft broke the law, and how someone getting punished for breaking the law makes you sick is beyond me.

No, they didn't. They broke their contract, and lost their license for it. The End. Microsoft being forced to include Java has nothing to do with breaking the law, Sun sued them because they are worried Java will lose market share because Windows ships with the .NET Framework. There is NO reason why Microsoft should be required to include Java in windows. I don't see Winamp trying to force Microsoft to ship their software with Windows just because Windows ships with WMP. Imagine if Microsoft had to ship all the 3rd party products that compete with bult-in Windows features.

P.S the Microsoft Java VM is 100x better than Sun's.

Sun has to be the crybaby of the 21st century.

Also they can drop the platform independence bit already, this is pretty much an urban myth about it due to JVM quality being different across the board.
#3.1 SanGreal on 15 Jun 2003 - 20:10
It's not platform independant, it is a platform.

I hate Sun's Java crap....it sucks so bad....
#5 Rathamon on 15 Jun 2003 - 21:35
this article isnt discussing whether its included in the OS , its saying the OEMs are choosing the distribute SUNs java , which is a good thing.
How do sun have a "monopoly" here? They developed java , surely they are allowed to distrubute it , this isnt even remotely a monopoly , java has competition and its called .Net

All you people are retarded and biased. HP and Dell are including the product. Hardware vendors! This has nothing to do with MS and Sun. Nobody on this website seems to even understand how Java works. And its not all about Sun, there are hundreds of companies that belong to the Java community and blah blah blah its not like anyone cares about non-ms products on this site anyway so I'm stopping.

So what if it's hardware vendors? Doesn't it still affect Microsoft and Sun?

It might not always be about Sun and Microsoft. But the article brought it up, so it is a legitimate issue. Sounds like you're a troll for bashing people actually talking about the article's content.
#8.3 SanGreal on 16 Jun 2003 - 08:13
You're retarded and biased. NOONE said the article focuses on the Microsoft/Sun legal battle. One person commented on the legal battle (which is mentioned in the article), and a branch of the discussion extended in that direction. But I guess I shouldn't expect such intellectual superiority to understand such a difficult concept!

Eh? Please explain it to us oh knowledgable one!

What does that have to do with anything. This deal/article deals specifically with Sun and the promotion of their (proprietary) platform. You did read the article, didn't you?

How many of you tards have ever actually USED java in your life?
#10.1 SanGreal on 17 Jun 2003 - 00:30
Yeah, because theres no way peoples complaints can be legitimate! Get a clue, most people have used Java, and many people are forced to learn the language as part of a CS degree.
#10.2 antareus on 17 Jun 2003 - 01:32
Yes, I've used it some at a previous job for a browser applet and some server side stuff. I hope this qualifies for the great Rathamon's judgment.

Luckily my CS program featured C++ the whole time for core classes.

Why does Sun's Java kill EVERY single java applet that i use on the web???
Sun's Java is bloated and it SUCKS

Yup, you should have to prove that you actually know anything (anything will do) about Java before you post here. MSJVM lovers are just making fools of themselves, and the funny thing is - you don't even know it! HA!

Java rocks. (minus applets)
