Microsoft has lost its status as the world's second-largest corporation to drug maker Pfizer due to slowing sales growth that caused it to miss out on this year's stock-market rally.

Pfizer's market value (stock price times number of outstanding shares) has jumped to $284.6 billion, up 17.9 percent in 2003.

Chief Executive Officer Henry McKinnell kept the company's sales growing faster than the pharmaceutical industry's average by snapping up rights to new products and buying rivals.

Microsoft's market value has held around $279.9 billion. Both Microsoft and Pfizer trail General Electric, with a $307.1 billion value.

Microsoft slipped from its No. 2 perch as computer-related shares soared. An index of computer companies in the Standard & Poor's 500 Index has climbed 23 percent this year, while shares of Microsoft have gained just 0.9 percent, the sixth-worst-performing stock among the 83 members of the technology index.

The keyboard is significantly smaller than that of the original Treo. The keys have a dome shape to them intended to make typing with thumbs easier. It has an integrated digital camera and will be able to send pictures via wireless e-mail. It will also play MP3 music files. The only thing we see missing is Bluetooth, and that can easily be added in a later model if the market demands it.

It will run Palm OS 5.2 and will come in versions for both GSM and CDMA wireless phone networks. On the CDMA side, you can expect Sprint PCS to be a major carrier--as it has carried the Treo 300 for some time and has a history with Handspring.

last year Pfizer bought Pharmacia and thus, doubled in size. I would suggest that if Microsoft bought Oracle, they would regain that 2nd place spot in market cap.

In other words... this is incomplete reporting of the news.

Just because you can put an asterix by any stat doesn't mean you are required to.

So Pfizer's second-largest corporation title doesnt count because they bought someone out?

And, as far as incomplete news... did you miss where it stated "snapping up rights to new products and buying rivals."?
