Thanks Razor_D for the heads up

It appears Microsoft have either been lapse with server security of they're preparing public access to the Technical Refresh of Office 2003 for those who aren't Beta testers. Below are the links to every part of the Technical Refresh available to all 600,000 that have the Beta 2 kit installed.

View: View Office 2003 Information

"The system was built to expand but not necessarily to be secure," said Herbert Schorr, executive director of the Information Sciences Institute. The fundamental information to make the whole thing work, for example, still lives on just 12 so-called root servers. "It can be brought down. You have to be technically proficient, but there are enough people who can do it," Schorr said.

Schorr said the most likely miscreant won't be a spike-haired hacker. More likely, it will be "blocks of office buildings in a foreign capital somewhere," he said.

600000 x 135megs == 77 Terabyte.

Plus traffic for all the other packs.
#1.1 creamhackered on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:18
Poor MS
#1.2 Tom Servo on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:38
If everyone would also get Visio, you could more than double that about. Then also add all the users that got Office via warez sites.

I don't want to see the transfer bill.
#1.3 Xeon™ on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:51
hahah. this is what the 20th time in the last 6-7 months that these kinds of downloads are availible on public servers? Oh well, as soon as MS see's this.. they'll take it down if it wasnt intentional
#1.4 Jason on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:57
It is intentional, all beta 2 users will get the refresh.
#1.5 Tom Servo on 23 Jun 2003 - 17:43
It was the same with the MSDN ISOs, I'm aware of tons of non-MSDN subscribers that downloaded it. Heh.
#1.6 JaggedFlame on 24 Jun 2003 - 04:01
I'm not so sure that one was intentional, though.
#2 acrophile on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:29

#3 Jason on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:29
I love the refresh all my bugs are fixed, found minor ones but this build is great.

Anyone with beta 2 installed rebuild your icon cache after install the refresh with tweakUi to get all the new ICONS.

The refresh adds Visio 2003, this program looks great !!
#4 xit on 23 Jun 2003 - 15:49

Call me strange for even thinking this, but are any of these full version or do I need the full Office 2003 Beta CDs?
#6.1 Unforgiven on 23 Jun 2003 - 16:14
You need Beta 2 CDs to install Technical Refresh - these are patches
#6.2 I8PP on 23 Jun 2003 - 16:15
Office 2003 beta 2 must be installed in order to install the tech refresh patches

#11 j2000wall on 23 Jun 2003 - 16:25

#15 gosh on 23 Jun 2003 - 17:22

Also, paul thorugh on his website www.wininformant.com predicted ms might make the refresh update public http://wininformant.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=39347

Urrm

Sorry to sound like a party pooper here but isnt this 'Warez', neowin are basically taking advantage of a security hole at beta place by providing direct links.

Is this another case of neowin's double standards then? I mention this because when i posted a link in the comments section a few weeks back to Windows Messenger 5.0 it got removed.... yet neowin freely post up security exploits that allow files that are only supposed to be available to beta testers to be downloaded. No "they may be preparing to launch it publically" does not save you, if they WANTED everyone to have it they would say so.
#19.1 creamhackered on 23 Jun 2003 - 18:21
It's not a security hole, these links are designed to be announced very shortly for the 600,000 others that are going to be downloading Office 2003 Refresh and for those who have MSDN accounts. If you have a problem with us obtaining the links and sharing them with the community then that's your deal. Office 2003 B2 onwards is public, therefore any copies of it or files hosted on Microsoft's public servers are public.

QUOTE
when i posted a link in the comments section a few weeks back to Windows Messenger 5.0 it got removed....

Microsoft requested that we remove the links. Right or wrong we still upheld their request even if you didn't!

We'll do the same here, but these still are publically accessible. Hardly protected in BetaPlace.
#19.3 RobertH on 23 Jun 2003 - 19:23
That i missed somehow, so now at least now i get that. Been nice if someone had told me why it got removed like at the time though

As for creamhackered, you say its not a seceuity hole.. so why did you say "Microsoft have either been lapse with server security...". Says to me your not sure eitherway.

I dont have a problem with it no, i wasnt trying to have ago at neowin but sometimes the rulez on these matters seem VERY misty. Actually I want to know where you get the information from about them releasing it publically very shortley? I think thats an asumption because the files are there - They most likley have moved them to that server to allow for the HUGE demand the 15,000 users placed on the server the otherday. Considering that mess with 15,000 users are u trying to say they are now ready for 600,000 in less than 2 days? hmmm.

Sorry if one of u may have taken it slightly personally btw because its was not meant to be.

The files are for MSDN download, the lapse in security is the fact they're not protected . This is intentional as by the end of this week, latest at the beginning of next - Microsoft will release these same links publically to it's 600,000 Beta 2 customers
(1 reply) #20 DrOmango on 23 Jun 2003 - 17:58

#20.1 Nightwind_Hawk on 23 Jun 2003 - 18:26

#21 StuRReaL on 23 Jun 2003 - 18:17

#22 Nightwind_Hawk on 23 Jun 2003 - 18:24

#23 fdiaz2day on 23 Jun 2003 - 19:17

People...this is intentional...come on...gee suz...get it and use it...
#28 wd40 on 24 Jun 2003 - 03:20
I think they put it on the ms download servers because betaplace was having so many issues and they wanted to get it out to everyone to use.
#29 antomello on 24 Jun 2003 - 07:50
Can someone help me which version of beta 2 can I apply the technical refresh on ?

I have the 5207 and the installation declare : " The expected version of the product was not found on your system " . thank you. ciao .
#30 sherpard on 24 Jun 2003 - 11:41
me too i had that message, and one thing, how come in office 2003 theres frontpagE? i checked all the difff editions on the microsoft office beta website and none stated there was frontpage included, or is it replaced with publisher? but i seem to find both like the same.hmm i dont know.
Thanks everyone
(1 reply) #31 xit on 24 Jun 2003 - 11:43
You can't install the refresh if your on 5207. You need the 4329 build or whatever it was (i cant remember the exact build )
#31.1 Avenger on 24 Jun 2003 - 17:58
Build 4920 was the Beta 2 build. I'm sure all the peeps who can't update from 5207 are really annoyed.
#32 allen2404 on 24 Jun 2003 - 13:49
I don't think it's on public servers to increase speed. When I downloaded the update for Onenote on Betaplace, I was downloading it at 1 MB/s. When I download it now, it's hitting around 400 KB/s.
I know these are both fast, but why would they put it on public servers if Betaplace was faster?
(1 reply) #33 dotnetjunkie on 24 Jun 2003 - 14:34
I'm getting much faster speeds than that!
I downloaded nearly all of them at a blazing 3,55 MB (yes megabyte) per sec...
And that's from Europe...
#33.1 allen2404 on 24 Jun 2003 - 15:25
Is that from the public server or Betaplace? ...Or are you trying to brag about your speed?
(1 reply) #34 heywooood on 24 Jun 2003 - 14:36
So no-one is having troubles installing this on the official MSDN version of beta 2?
I install it fine, but when I go to run the new versions it tells me my CD key is invalid and asks for a new one. The real MSDN cd-key doesn't work though. Are there new keys for the refresh?
#34.1 Avenger on 24 Jun 2003 - 18:03
There are a few people who are having the same problem with the Keys as well, in the groups. I'm not sure what the exact cause is.
#35 Yvo on 24 Jun 2003 - 19:35
Possibility of slip streaming beta2???
#36 BeeJay on 24 Jun 2003 - 20:34
I think this update uninstalled Microsoft Access, what the heck? I had it installed as part of BETA 2. Doh!
#37 pearls0612 on 24 Jun 2003 - 20:34
Ugh - The Business Contact Manager *patch* for Outlook 2003 appears to constantly cause a pop up dialog prompting the user to allow access to yer address book - say adios to BCM for me...

Neowin had to remove at MS request?
why keeping it quiet?
#44.1 pearls0612 on 08 Jul 2003 - 15:32
Microsoft has the downloads posted for general consumption. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en
and search for 'Beta Technical Refresh' - you'll get the whole list.
