Ratcheting up the rhetoric in the war on unsolicited "spam" e-mail, Network Associates Inc. said Friday that it was declaring the U.S. Independence Day holiday "Independence from Spam Day" and will give out free copies of its McAfee SpamKiller product online and in retail stores on July 4.
The first 1,776 visitors to www.mcafee.com will receive a free copy of SpamKiller on the holiday. Network Associates will also distribute free copies of the software to the first 20 visitors to each of 922 OfficeMax Inc. retail outlets in the U.S., the company said.
The announcement was part of a coordinated marketing effort by Network Associates that included the release of a survey showing the frequency of spam management edging out other popular leisure activities such as exercise, reading to children, and sex.
In June, Network Associates surveyed more than 1,500 online participants and found that around half spend more than 40 minutes a week deleting spam, according to a statement.
Pornography topped the list of spam e-mail topics, with mortgage refinancing, credit counseling and sexual enhancement products being other popular themes, the company said.

Rick Finkelstein, president and chief operating officer of Universal Pictures, said he did not expect this episode to significantly alter the studio's marketing procedures. "We are constantly evaluating our internal security measures, and we are always seeing areas where we can improve our security," he said. "This will have a significance, but we don't want to blow it out of proportion."
Gonzalez entered his guilty plea to United States Magistrate Judge Gabriel Gorenstein. He is scheduled to be sentenced September 26.
An insurance underwriter, Gonzalez told the judge that he knew what he was doing was wrong. Asked by reporters afterward whether he liked the movie, Gonzalez said: "I haven't even watched it."

Symantec, why don't you do the same......
Spam does actually cost me MONEY; my ISP’s (Etisalat, U.A.E.) POP3 account is pretty much useless cause of the amount of waste I get in it. My Eudora 5.2 filters managed to cut it down by about 65%.
Sad part is my ISP doesn’t even have any Spam filters, with no attachment encryption features as well [Plug: GMX.net with Eudora 5.2
Eudora 6 (Beta) has some ADVANCE Spam detection tools, let’s hope they work
Makes me wonder if big time private/government funded ISPs can’t provide these features, then we’re left at the mercy of private software solution providers, not to mention firms like Microsoft
We need to go after Spammers on a "D-day” level attack scale
