Thanks xStainDx. Although Linus Torvalds didn't meet a goal to release the upcoming 2.6 version of the Linux operating system in June, the Linux leader said a test version could come as soon as next week.

"I'm planning on starting the so-called 'pre-2.6' series early July, and that is kind of a beta series," Torvalds said Wednesday in an interview. He and Andrew Morton, the programmer who will maintain the 2.6 version, "are talking about starting a pre-2.6 series next week," Torvalds said.

"It will most likely take a few months after that for the real 2.6.0," he said. "And, as usual, the thing doesn't stop there. It usually takes at least half a year before vendors really switch over."

IBM executives said in June that the company expected products using the 2.6 kernel to be released in the first half of 2004. Previously, they had hoped for the second half of 2003.

Last October, Torvalds said he hoped to launch the 2.6 version by June. Now, he's more guarded.

"Schedules schmedules," Torvalds quipped. "I'm late, and I always am."

Linux, a Unix-like operating system collaboratively created by numerous programmers in the open-source movement, began as a hobby but now is used by numerous companies worldwide. IBM, for example, on Wednesday said financial services firm ING Canada bought an IBM z900 mainframe to run Linux applications. The system will be used to help process increasing amounts of insurance-claim transactions, the companies said.

Look at the changelogs on kernel.org. That is, if you don't grow old while reading them
#3.2 sengork on 03 Jul 2003 - 13:52
AGP 8x support being one of them

THere is no 2.6 OS, it is 2.6 Kernel.

Who said anything about a 2.6 OS?

Heheh, it's CNET news, they don't expect their readers (or writers) to know what a kernal is!
#4.4 configure on 04 Jul 2003 - 07:47
You mean kernel?
#4.5 NinjaOfLove on 04 Jul 2003 - 17:14
I'm glad someone pointed out the irony of that.

Updating Linux (esp. Redhat) to new Kernel releases is a bitch. The last time I tried doing it when I actually had Linux installed I crashed the machine so hard -- and I was using Redhat's own Update utility.

Agreed. Something always breaks, so don't be an early adopter.

kernel 2.6 will be a new quality for linux .....
#6.1 JaggedFlame on 03 Jul 2003 - 23:14
You don't like developers, yet you like open source?

What the hell is that supposed to mean?
#6.2 Goalie_CA on 04 Jul 2003 - 04:28
Uncle Fester "aka Balmer" ran around like a monkey sweating with arm pit stains yelling developpers! developpers! developpers! to microsoft employees at a pep rally.
#6.3 JaggedFlame on 04 Jul 2003 - 06:56
I know. I saw it.

It seems pretty irrelevant in the original post. So I reiterate, what the hell is that supposed to mean?

I dont understand, they already have loads of different distributions of linux whats this one all about ?
#7.1 Marshalus on 03 Jul 2003 - 17:27
The kernel is the core of the Linux operating system, just as Windows has a kernel. The difference being in Linux the kernel can be updated independently of the OS.

Example: you may be running RedHat 9.0, but you're still running the Linux 2.4 kernel. After 2.6 is released, you'll be able to upgrade to that to add new functionality to your OS (such as AGP 8x support) BUT you'll still be running RedHat 9.0.

It's one of the neat things about Linux.
#7.2 Sawyer12 on 03 Jul 2003 - 17:59
Ah i see
#7.3 nullie on 03 Jul 2003 - 23:59
Yeah, real neat.. gotta wait ages for the next kernel just for updated hardware support.

Well the fact that you can run RedHat 1.0 with the latest kernel and still be able to run the newest programs and software I think is kinda cool.
#8.1 Yvo on 04 Jul 2003 - 08:55
yes it is but totally not recommended
#9 slapnuts_ox on 05 Jul 2003 - 20:56
yea you can do that....as long as you resolve all dependancies ;-)
