Dear Tester:
We are currently planning for the Windows Update V5 Preview Program. As a current Windows Update V4 beta user, we hope you will consider participating in this new program.

The vision for Windows Update V5 is to provide an efficient and effective means to keep all Microsoft products secure and up to date with the latest patches, starting with Windows, Office, SQL, and Exchange.

The key to an effective pre-release program is having customers participate who are willing and able to install, exercise, and provide feedback on the product in a timely manner. Please carefully consider your willingness and ability to follow through on these commitments.

If you are selected as a Windows Update V5 beta user, you will be required to:
· Use releases through BetaPlace, an authenticated Web site
· Submit bug reports online
· Participate in private beta newsgroups
· Complete periodic surveys hosted on BetaPlace to obtain your input on various issues

Your eligibility for the program is based on the information we obtain from your nomination survey and space availability in the program.

If you are interested in participating, please use your .NET Passport account and the special Guest Account below to access a nomination survey on . Please respond by Friday, September 12, 2003.

So does this mean that is going to be one stop in the future for OS patches and Office patches i wont have to go to 2 different update sites?

If so then they should change the name to Microsoft update instead of Windows update eh..er...yeah

Why was it called V4 beta? I thought that the current Windowsupdate was v4
Quote this comment #3.1 Posted by gameguy on 05 Sep 2003 - 04:35
that has confused me beyond words

Becuase it used the V4 engine but the patches themselves were/are beta/pre-release patches

Important notes:

Pre-release software is distributed for testing purposes only. Installing patches from the pre-release site will not necessarily keep your computer secure and up to date.

To keep your computer secure and up to date, please visit the current Windows Update site at http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com.

DO NOT join this beta just because you think you'll get better fixes sooner. they will leak anyway most likely.

sure they do. neowin's even posted links to some of them. xp has a kernel rollup package that (to the best of my knowledge) is still in beta stage.

no, its not beta, you can get it from Microsoft by calling them, there are no PRE-RELEASE Patches.

There are Released Patches.

And

Released Patches in which you need to call Microsoft for.

Patches do not undergo heavy regression testing, thats why SP's are much better.
