Ratified and Wi-Fi-Certified, the Wireless-G Lineup Includes The Only First-Party Solution for Wireless Xbox Gaming

Microsoft Corp. today unveiled Wireless-G, an innovative Wi-Fi®-certified 802.11g wireless networking solution. Utilizing powerful security technologies, the new lineup of wireless networking products enables consumers to simply share a broadband Internet connection, information files, printers and more between all the computers in the home — at up to five times the speed of a typical 802.11b wireless network.

The new products introduced today are Microsoft® Wireless Base Station MN-700, a router with an integrated 802.11g wireless access point and four-point Ethernet switch; Wireless Notebook Adapter MN-720, which adds a notebook computer to the wireless network; Wireless PCI Adapter MN-730, which adds a desktop computer to the network; Wireless Notebook Kit MN-820, with everything users need to create a wireless network for a desktop and notebook; and Xbox® Wireless Adapter MN-740, the only comprehensive, first-party solution for high- performance Xbox gaming without the hassle of wires.

"Wi-Fi is an exploding technology with adoption growing at a rapid pace," said Todd Greenberg, product manager for Microsoft Broadband Networking. "Microsoft Wireless-G products feature standards- based technology to ensure compatibility; an enhanced, proprietary Setup Wizard for easy network setup; and premier security out of the box, making it easy for consumers to join this trend."

Why would Microsoft even release a 54Mbit connection for the X-Box when they don't encourage Linux. I'd like to know what game is going to need more than 11Mbps (802.11b) for connecting to a 1.5Mbit cable/DSL modem.

And this has what to do with Linux ?

umm linux has nothing to do with xbox, and xbox needs a relatively fast connection, and the faster the less bottleneck, yes it only takes 10mbit connection for xbox, but when you have wireless and have more then just an xbox on it, you have bottlenecking and need the extra bandwidth

nice.. this could be good for me to share my connection with my xbox after I move to my new place.

"Microsoft Corp. today unveiled Wireless-G, an innovative Wi-Fi®-certified 802.11g wireless networking solution"

Innovative huh? Considering there are already a ton of 802.11g wireless routers and cards, there's absolutely nothing innovative about this. Got to love these marketing teams.

i think they mean innovative becuase their broadband hardware is so easy to use and their software is easy and smart. 802.11g itself is innovative especially to the typical home user. New technolgy+easy to use = innovative for the normal broadband user

It's nice to seem MS "innovating" something that Apple championed 802.11g aka Airport Extreme.

Except Apple's was nonstandard at release, much like the other g hardware of the time (and like b hardware that jumped the gun, including the original Airport). MS waited for ratification to ensure compatability.
