For the first time in several years, Apple looks poised to refresh its famous logo. One of the world's most recognizable corporate symbols -- the Apple logo -- is about to get a silvery chrome finish. The logo's shape remains unchanged -- an apple with a bite taken out of the right side. The effect is a lot like the chrome female robots of Hajime Sorayama. At least, that's the best guess of Apple watchers, who spotted the new logo in the latest test version of Apple's OS X operating system. It is not clear whether Apple will adopt the new silver logo for product design, as well as marketing and packaging, or simply restrict it to the new software.
Whatever Apple decides to do, the new logo got a hearty endorsement from Rob Janoff, the graphic designer who created Apple's original, rainbow-striped logo. "It freshens it up," Janoff said of the new color scheme. "It's great to take an image and keep revising it and making it better. I'm totally into it." Janoff acknowledged an outcry might be heard from Apple purists. He noted there were complaints in 1998 when Apple's CEO Steve Jobs ordered Janoff's rainbow-striped logo to be replaced with a monochrome version on the PowerBook G3, the first Mac to get the new logo. "I'd rather they updated it than dumped it," he said. Janoff said when he first presented the Apple logo to Steve Jobs in 1976, he showed a range of alternative monochrome designs. One of them was metallic silver and bore a striking resemblance to the new chrome logo.

people buy macs? could have fooled me
Yeah.. funny that isn't it. I guess someone must be buying those Apple computers because the company is still going? They certainly don't give them away so I guess people MUST be buying them!!
Obviously you are easily fooled?
Sheesh.
Note: I saw this logo on an iMac box about 2 weeks ago so it was on the box before in the OS.
They got to 7.2% last quarter, and should be even more this coming one

Yeah that was only in the US (where most of the mac users are). And that too in the laptop segment.
An orange?
The last time that I can think of that Apple made a major change in the logo was around 1999 when they dropped the rainbow colors from it.
I have geniuinely always tried to stay quite neutral, and when I post something I like to think there is justification and experience behind it - i'd wager that probably 90% of the Windows users coming in here to flame the Mac users have never even used a Macintosh - or have gone up to one, seen the single button mouse and said "OMG - how ghey is that.." and wondered off.
You know, if you want to just use Windows or just use a Mac then thats fine - go ahead. In the end you are just going to lose out by being so narrow minded - having experience of multiple systems really can have huge benefits. I'm familiar with various types of UNIX, Linux, all versions of Windows, and now MacOSX. Aside from being useful day to day, it also makes you employable in the computing world if that is your chosen career path.
MacOSX is a pretty enlightening experience - its like using Linux, only they now got a superb GUI that works so well, and hardware integration that behaves. I can't get enough of it. But I also still use Windows XP which I don't think i'll ever be able to leave behind.
Ho hum. Rant over.

Take a look at the large mac sites and still tell me Apple doesn't sell.If you still say Apple isn't popular then maybe you are just trying to justify yourself purchasing a PC, I don't know.
Well, I'm glad I got that off my chest. I'm sure lots of mac users can agree here.

Ok, I`m ussaly to lazy to post here and I just skim the comments and read the news but you just steped over the line. It`s a computer not something worth attacking another mans antomy. Also, have you ever used a Mac for over 10 mins. I also had the same mentality as you untill I vetured over to the Mac section and my local CompUsa to see what all the hype was about. I was amazed by it, We (me and the sales man) ran this singal G4 with 256 of ram through the ringer; We had 25 video playing in seqence, had Photoshop and Illistartor open and running varius fillter then, then we put the computer to sleep by a wave of a fingure at the bottom of the moniter; then started it back up agian and ever video started right back up were we left it. The only bad thing I have to say about Apple is their price but that I`ll get over in time.

To get back on topic, I like the chrome finnish. I wouldn't call it a redesign of the logo though... It's just a different way to render it, like the various Aqua variants of it.
AshMan: This isn't a Windows site. Where did you get that idea from?
[EDIT] wow, the "Apple, Cut Out the Brushed Metal" petition has a total of 751 Total Signatures up to date... I don't think that the brushed metal is that bad...[/EDIT]
"This is clearly a reference to the Fall, when Adam and Eve were tempted with an apple by the serpent. It is now Apple Computers offering us temptation, thereby aligning themselves with the forces of darkness.
AHAHHAHAHA!
