UPDATE: Half Life 2 Beta Leaks To All, Release Date Delays?

Advertisement (Why?)
Originally the source code leaked in a 32meg package last week. The leak spelt the beginning of an investigation into how this could have happened. The result? A flurry of forums across the internet all buzzing about the leak of code to one of the most anticipated games of all time. Most believe the leak of source code is a bad thing and yet the leak of a beta copy of the game isn't.

Today the Half Life 2 Beta leaked across the world onto the internet via IRC channels. The release by "anon" shows it's obvious that the hackers who managed to sucessfully steal source code of the game itself also stole the game itself and who knows what else.

Today there are reports that Half Life 2 has been put back to 2004 due to the source code leaks, although these reports haven't been officially denied by Valve or confirmed. This latest leak of the game itself is sure to hit Valve hard.

UPDATE: According to this article by CNN, Valve has pushed the release date by four months, to April 2004, for spending time to rewrite parts of the game.
Contrary to CNN's report, The Inquirer is reporting that Sources close to them say that the "holiday season" release date is still set in stone. Valve is going to issue a statement confirming all this soon.

HOLY SH**. These guys are getting agressive at leaking stuff.

I feel bad for the company. Today the game gets delayed because of source code leaks, then the full beta gets leaked to the internet.

Sadly I'm on a 56k Modem and a 350Mhz PC so I'm not sure that the game will run properly on my system.

Now if the Xbox underground can mod this beta onto the Xbox so I can test before release......

"Sadly I'm on a 56k Modem and a 350Mhz PC so I'm not sure that the game will run properly on my system."

If it's beta, it probably contains beta code for debugging, making it slower than the release, so it might not have been a good indicator anyway.
#1.6 RetardedDevil on 08 Oct 2003 - 13:13
This is starting to piss me off, First rumors of a beta game released were exposed as false and then code gets leaked over the internet? I just think Valve is bein lazy about the game. I mean so what if 13 million people have access to a third of the code that makes the game? It just means that the general public has more info on who is running what and how. Is that wrong? Hacking has always been a touchy subject especially when your talking to people with lots of power and the chance to lose it all by having their methods exposed by some curious 12 year old kid. It's unfair that they have to push the game release date to 2004 but what can we do about it? Absolutely nothing. So Valve No you do not have my support and when your game comes out, I wont buy it. I might steal it if indeed you did a good job on it, but from what I've seen its just as good as the original with hardly anything new.

Sanity, Literal Profanity!

Now with the beta out and the source can somebody please prog a "Shadowrun" game?
(1 reply) #4 Fubar on 07 Oct 2003 - 13:58
another leak ? jeez these guys need to know about security
#4.1 Jugalator on 08 Oct 2003 - 08:56
Was probably the same hackers, so they had the full game before we even knew they had the source code.
(2 replies) #5 memNOC on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:00
goddamit.. cant they wait like normal people instead of stealing the source and making Valve recode everything and waiting 6 months for the final?

*sometimes*, i hate piracy..
#5.1 WeeJames on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:48
Valve hardly have to recode everything.. i smell an excuse...
#5.2 insurektion on 08 Oct 2003 - 01:41

#6 nvme on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:00
this really sucks for valve and for all the players now we have to wait even longer to get the game

so much for april 2004. if they wait that long, it doesn't only require a code change, but a completely new story and set of maps.
#8.1 Jugalator on 08 Oct 2003 - 08:58
They were probably far from a release anyway (i.e. before the leaks). I think we'd see this delay regardless what.
#8.2 jivemastert on 09 Oct 2003 - 06:25
lol, they gotta change the whole game? wtf are you smoking? it will be the same game, story, and probably the same code. just cause something is leaked doesnt mean it they gotta change it.

well from you above statements and the ranting on these boards it clearly shows you have no clue what a hacker is.

keep on beliveing what hollywood says about hackers.

gabe was a complete moron for trusting a microsoft product for security.
#11.6 macster on 08 Oct 2003 - 15:21
Lets just say i have some knowledge of buffer overruns and lots of other stuff myself

I wonder who you think can get into gabe computer, install key loggers without them knowing about it or feeling anything (considering that ppl at valve making games are probably not noobs at computers ) and download gigabytes of data without them noticing it. Well unless the ppl are Valve are really idiots

Script kiddie or real "hacker" as you call it, they still hack ppl's computer and make trouble

#14 insurektion on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:30
im going to download this first chance i get i wish valve would just release HL2 already and not worry about the fact they screwed up with security. i mean i know its the hackers fault for taking it but seriously why cant valve just release the freakin game so i can play online. oh well beta away for me.
#15 insurektion on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:32
im going to purchase this gae no matter what but soon=better.
#16 Jon on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:33
I hate to be hideously pedantic, but they are IRC Channels, not 'rooms' (one of my pet hates )

This is prolly nothing stranger than lots of WinXP exploits being found, if enough ppl want (to break) something, they'll find away.
(1 reply) #17 Ash on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:44
Yeah but its not the full beta tho, its just like 5 maps from e3 aint it? From the screen of the archive it seems it only 5 maps from e3. Mayve valve might wanna consider throwing an official-unofficial beta demo out there.
#17.1 RetardedDevil on 08 Oct 2003 - 13:18
Valve cant give out a demo cuz they say they lost 1/3 their code, which in my opion means they never near finishing for christmas so all they have now is the demo movies which they had a month ago.

DOWN WITH CORPORATE AMERICA!!!!

It's now on CNN. This really bites.. Thanks to whom ever hacked and leaked this. I hope you rot and die.
#18.1 vetToxicfume on 07 Oct 2003 - 15:10
That article is about the source's source code leak, which happened a few days ago.
#19 thornz0 on 07 Oct 2003 - 14:57
how sad.
I think it bothers me more that the hackers probably dont care they ruined it for so many more than having to wait longer
(1 reply) #20 shark1 on 07 Oct 2003 - 15:03
I don't care really, leak or not, i will be buying the game anyway. This might also be valves own fault, they hyped so much the product for commercial purpose ($$$$) that they are now facing the other side of the coin

Maybe next time they can get a a good release date .... that would be a change for once in the gaming industry.

BTW, dev. from Doom3 should be carefull now who knows !

I find it extremely interesting that Neowin ALWAYS deletes threads on anything Warez, even asking what Warez is, but they allow a leaked, WAREZ version of Half Life's Source Code to be discussed....

What a laugh...
#25.1 Jstphish on 07 Oct 2003 - 15:39
Read the thread, you understand why ... as Timdorr posted, it's news on everyones webpage and we aren't posting anything that isn't anywhere else.
#25.2 vetToxicfume on 07 Oct 2003 - 15:44
You may discuss the source or not, thats up to you, but we don't allow posting of the actual source code itself, including it's download links. Hope that clears it up.

I have one already, prick. Whenver someone challenges or questions your rules, you don't like it and start the name calling...what a great staff *pfft*
#25.5 JaggedFlame on 07 Oct 2003 - 17:55
Leave, then. Who's holding a gun to your head?
#25.6 Jon on 07 Oct 2003 - 17:56
So by your logic because we arn't allowed to talk about hacking techniques, we arn't allowed to talk about viruse infections.
If you are so uncomfortable with the rules leave!!!
#25.7 Mr. Black on 07 Oct 2003 - 19:31
It's a free country, and my keyboard. If I don't feel something is right, I have the right to speak up, just like you do. I have a point to what i'm saying.

And I'm not leaving - i'll stay for the free cookies...
End of debate.
#25.8 Redmak on 07 Oct 2003 - 19:51
Ofcourse you're entitled to your oppinion.

It's not always easy to decide what and what not to allow. Not allowing every member on the forum to post leaked screenshots whenever they wish makes this decision easier.

We won't be surprised by some illegal thread on the forums this way. It gives us control over what is shown on Neowin

First of all, this website isn't the United States, and second of all, the site owners have the right to do whatever they want on their site, including banning people like you, me, or whoever they want.

Now since this warez crap doesn't affect anyone but Neowin, who might get in trouble for it, I fail to see why you're whining about it. It's not like it being on the site is somehow draining your life essence away. "Get a life" would be the appropriate thing to do.

A kick in the nuts for VALVe.
(1 reply) #29 TopMan on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:00
hahaha

First stealing the source via hacking (I red something about hacking into web mail account?) is the stupidiest thing that I ever heard. I think Valve are playing dumb. I do not believe it I am thinking I am enough experienced with computers to believe that someone will stole files via they way they said.

Also about the HL2 release delay. What happend with the people with the new kick-ass game systems? Are you proud now? No HL2 for now hahaha
Play HL1 on your systems!
#29.1 Hatez on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:32
They used an exploit access to root the box, copied the tree and downloaded everything...
#30 RangerLG on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:09
Is it just me or does there seem to be several errors on the screenshots. Makes me think this might be a planned leak to have another delay excuse. Doesn't matter to me, its just a game and will not change my life regardless of if/when it will be released.
#31 §imGuy on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:30
This is kind of sad, and I was going to really beg my parents to buy this for my Christmas present (and I was 100% sure they would). Oh well, gotta wait until my birthday or buy it with my own money.

Or even not buy this game at all

#32.1 Yakkob on 07 Oct 2003 - 21:17
I have to say I agree with Dokt on this one.

(I was going to download it)...

BUT

I have had the game on pre-order ever since you could pre-order.
I don't want to ruin the experience.

Booyah to Valve....
#33 MitchShrader on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:35
so large profits mean large risks.. and the main risk is losing your investment and reputation when you make a mistake. i'd say lack of security was a big mistake.. the people who sell Other games i'ma bet have tightened up security lately, you think? .. one thing i am pretty sure of, valve didn't fake this for ANY reason.. they look dumb and it costs em money.. (oh.. yeah, my hint to valve: drop price, get your game on the street ASAP, with a 'free upgrade' promise, cause waiting won't help ya.. longer ya wait, more its gonna hurt.. my 2 cents worth)
#34 KeR on 07 Oct 2003 - 16:42

I get home and find this post. If you don't believe ask mods/admins the IP.
