Even developers who are 100 percent committed to the Microsoft platform are complaining that its inherent weaknesses are killing them.

There's a love-in coming to California next week, but it won't be grooving along in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district. Instead, it'll be headquartered in a boxy convention center in downtown Los Angeles. The event will be Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference, where thousands of programmers who create Windows applications and drivers will schmooze, share tips and learn what changes the software company is planning for its next major Windows operating system release. That, of course, will be "Longhorn," which will ship sometime in 2005 or 2006.

Attendees are expecting to receive a CD-ROM containing an early, prebeta release of the graphical operating system, plus previews of new SQL Server and Visual Studio technology and other stuff. But love is a complex emotion, and there are signs that the ties that bind Microsoft and its developer community are undergoing strain. Even developers who are 100 percent committed to the Microsoft platform are complaining that its inherent weaknesses are killing them—and the enterprises that use the applications the developers create.

You guys didn't understand my point which is understandable since it wasn't very direct. I am a typical Windows user...always have been but Apple has actually made me wonder if what they have might be better. After reading about how awesome the Ipod is (I don't have one) and how cool OS X is and how it's built on linux and then using Itunes on Windows and seeing how cool it is, it seems they have some really great stuff to offer. If MS doesn't get their act together and make Longhorn an awesome OS I bet others will come to the same conclusion. Actually I have never owned a Mac. First computer was an IBM PC XT with 2 floppies and no hard drive. Current computer assembled by myself with Asus MB & AMD processor in Thermaltake aluminum case.

Gotta go!

FreeBSD

Right. FreeBSD which is closer to linux than Unix.

Gee, I wonder how long it will take for this to make its way to the internet? LOL

Prolly being packed as we speak

Don't worry about pirating the build. Microsoft will make it available online to one and all in November for a small fee, I'm told, and ship it to Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) Universal customers in December

It would make sense, as most Linux distros are multi-CDROM. Of course you do get a hell of a lot more out of a Linux distro!

But, I think that they will release on CD-ROM. Just like thier installs defaulted to lower VGA resolutions and only 256 color for a LONG time to maintain maximum compatability....

Any word when beta nominations will begin?

I love apple, but the whole thing with microsoft was the fact that every year they had a new os, now that they are taking there time over the next one and apple have started chucking them out people are moaning at microsoft for taking there time.

why cant we all just get along, if you hate microsoft DON'T BLODY USE A PC

Actually they've been criticized for not having one every year
#5.2 JaggedFlame on 25 Oct 2003 - 04:31
They've been criticized way more for releasing a new OS every two years and "forcing" people to upgrade.
#5.3 eangulus on 25 Oct 2003 - 10:09
If you are complaining that Microsoft was releasing an OS every year, then how can you like Apple?

They have released 4 Major Updates (including the initial OSX release) in UNDER 4 years.
#5.4 aent on 25 Oct 2003 - 18:08
What kind of comment is that?
If you don't like microsoft, feel free to use a PC, just don't use microsoft products on it, I use Linux without any microsoft products and it runs better then it ever did when it ran windows on it...
I still recommend PCs to people, but I don't recommend using microsoft products on one as it just degrades performance...
#6 Fozzieb on 25 Oct 2003 - 11:20
i was no complaining about anyone, i was just saying first microsoft released evey other year now apple are releasing every 6 months, no one complained about apple but they did about microsoft,

enough is enough, if it was not for microsoft and apple we would all be stuck in the dark ages

It was only the other week when Microsoft announced development on further OS be put on hold and now we have them then they announce Longhorn is back on track again...

So was this a ploy to get people talking and Longhorn and all saying no no no.... they can not put this on hold and then announce it's back on track again.... MS you are the man when it comes to scare mongering....
