Microsoft and Google: Partners or rivals?

Wall Street is not the only one wooing Google. Microsoft is as well.

Google, the high-flying Web search company, recently began holding meetings with bankers in preparation for its highly anticipated initial public offering. At the same time, it was still engaged in meetings of another kind: exploring a partnership or even a merger with Microsoft. According to company executives and others briefed on the discussions, Microsoft--desperate to capture a slice of the popular and ad-generating search business--approached Google within the last two months to discuss options, including the possibility of a takeover.

While the overture appears to have gained little traction--Google indicated that it preferred the initial offering route, the executives said--it demonstrates the enormous importance that Google represents as both a competitive threat to Microsoft and as Silicon Valley's latest hope for a new financial boom. Though seemingly spurned, Microsoft may still be interested in pursuing Google at a later date, according to an executive briefed on the discussions. Both Google and Microsoft executives refused to comment.

Now that you have set the desired cabin altitude, simply turn on the bleed air and the cabin will begin to go to that alitude if you are higher than that. Twiddle the very lower-left knob with no label to get there faster or slower. Then climb above 12,500 or so and turn off the bleed air, or set a cabin altitude above 12,500... you will slowly black out! This is a serious occurence in the real airplane that you must avoid if you want to live. NOTE: You must be flying an airplane that HAS a pressurization differential in the SYSTEMS screen in Plane-Maker for this effect to occurr.
Otherwise, X-Plane assumes that the designer simply did not include the pressurization systems in the aircraft, adn the pressurization system is assumed to
be automated.

Trim speed is now controllable in Plane-Maker controls screen... enter the trim speed in ratio to default.

In Plane-Maker engine screen tab 3, set the exhaust ratio now... 1.0 for default, and more or less per plane to get the exhaust trails perfect for each particular craft!

New artificial stability option: Joystick simply sets pitch and roll. Easy!
Just move the stick to set the desired hovering attitude. Set up the constants in Plane-Maker Artificial Stability screen

What a terrifying thought - Microsoft owning Google.

#4 dsteele_7 on 31 Oct 2003 - 17:11
the second microsoft would take over google either A) the web would cry and commit suicide or B) it would be soooo shot full of security holes and bugs it would just be oo instaed of GooGLE.

I don't understand the ignorance being spewed here. This kind of thing is rather common. Did it kill MAC when MS bought a large share of it? No, i would say it is a key factor in MAC still being around. As takeovers go being taken over by MS is painless.
#6.1 PseudoRandomDragon on 31 Oct 2003 - 17:25
Except for the fact that if I want to use one of the most comprehensive search tools, I will have to use Microsoft. They own enough.
#6.2 GSDragoon on 31 Oct 2003 - 20:13
The only reason you say that is because you hate Microsoft. So, even if Microsoft has a good product, you won't like it because you hate them and NOT the product. There's no common sence in that way of thinking.
#6.3 werejag on 31 Oct 2003 - 20:34
im still waiting for Microsoft to make a good product. hate is not the issue one bit just becuase you think microsoft can do no wrong, doesnt me they have done so

I use Windows 98SE. All I am saying is no one company should be able to partake in so many markets. That is why I use Windows the Operating System, but no search engine by Microsoft.

They didn't say it was going to happen, they just said that it is a possiblity, so don't cry and complain just yet. If Google becomes a part of microsoft, im going to have to add yet another site on my block list. I doubt this will happen though, Microsoft has a bad rep of merging with a company, stealing ideas and then throwing them away.
#7.1 darksoul on 31 Oct 2003 - 17:27
The bad rep is when they partner with a company not merge with them
#7.2 PseudoRandomDragon on 31 Oct 2003 - 17:28
Partner, merge, whatever.

Sometimes good thing can come from things like this. Take FrontPage for example. It was a usable product before MS bought the company that made it, and now look at FrontPage 2003.....a major improvment and it's ten times more popular then it was before. All from MS buying the company and continuing it's work.
#7.4 werejag on 31 Oct 2003 - 20:30
people still use frontpage?

#7.8 Avenger on 01 Nov 2003 - 00:02
Oh gee, that's original. Come up with something a little more creative next time. As opposed to your typical and predictable MS bashing.

Of course people use FrontPage. Paul Thurrott for example, uses FP 2003. Just because you don't use it, doesn't mean everyone else doesn't. FP 2003 is a great program.

i thought MS was working on his own search engine....now MS just needs to buy Google, annihilate it and propose his own search engine instead...
(3 replies) #11 bangbang023 on 31 Oct 2003 - 18:21
You know, even if they do purchase it, they may just leave it alone and place like one banner ad on the main site. Microsoft isn't stupid. They know why people go to google. Simple, few ads, and great results. They wouldn't change that winnning equation.

microsft tends to just takeover not knowing why things are popular and then ruin it

Uhh that doesn't make any sense. Why would they bother taking over something if they didn't know it's popular beforehand? They know what's popular and that's when they get interested. Duh.

i really dont think google would sell out to microsoft. they are doing so well alone. and since adsense, they should not be short of revenues and if they go public, they can be pretty big...
#13 whistlerxp on 31 Oct 2003 - 22:13
If Microsoft bought Google they would probably keep it the same, maybe link with msn... MSN Google™ ARGGHHHHHHH!!!
#14 eilegz on 31 Oct 2003 - 23:45
well this sound like the days that microsoft was trying to buy or get netscape but since they couldnt they use dirty trick and u see no one use netscape basically is dead even aol cant do anything about it, now the same would happen with google i guess

microsoft will never change sad but its true
#15 sodapop on 01 Nov 2003 - 00:11
Google is popular because it's a simple, non-cluttered site.

Although lately I can't seem to find jack crap when I search for something on there.
#16 wildduck on 01 Nov 2003 - 00:12
just read in the newspaper that Google has decieded not to sell
#17 Jelly2003 on 01 Nov 2003 - 01:03
if MS took over Google it would become a big bulky web search mega site that only runs on IE

EDIT: Great news that they aren't sellign to MS too!

Sometimes the argument isn't as simple as "you hate microsoft". I've been working in I.T. for over 6 years and I follow very closely the movements of Microsoft (hence I read neowin quite a bit ). The "Microsoft way" has always been pretty easy for me - I like the admin tools and I like WinXP because it's the easiest OS for our users. What does matter to me is the way Microsoft takes over whatever it wants and uses it for it's own purpose.

For those of you who have forgotten, IE2/3 shipped with MSN - the Microsoft Network - because MS didn't realise the potential of the Internet! Well if they couldn't get everyone to use MSN because they used the Internet, why not just claim the net? They've done IIS, web clustering and storage, IE 4, 5 and 6, numerous variations on internet/programming standards (i.e. JScript), created .net for seamless net integration on various levels, and they've got Hotmail - the most widely used web based email app. It's no surprise that aquiring Google is in their roadmap - they just need a [decent] search engine (ever used MSN search? pff).

All that said, they've made a massive difference to the Internet community (nobody will deny that) but they're constantly looking to make money from their work - like any business - and that's where the issue is. We don't want google to be pay for, or I suspect, MS branded (for the "MS haters" ). [Am I the only one who dislikes the hotmail/msn bloated UI?]. Hotmail charges for more space. Will MSgoogle charge for some of their services? Who knows.

There is no way that Google would even sell to Microsoft considering they are just getting ready to do an IPO worth 15 billion. Merge Perhaps but they wouldn't give Microsoft enough stock to allow them to even think of a takeover bid
#21.1 YaddaMe on 02 Nov 2003 - 03:13
Why not? That $15billion is just the est company value.... they are only selling 10-15% of the company, which would be around $2billion in cash generated for the company. Instead of going public, that 10-15% could just as well be sold to MS, & still have complete control of their product.

Just remember days of Hotmail guys, and the days of MSN Hotmail.
MS f**ked Hotmail up and made it to spam heaven.
#22.1 darksoul on 03 Nov 2003 - 15:22
no, it's popularity made it spam heaven.
