This update provides support for Wireless Protected Access, a new standards-based wireless security solution developed by the Wi-Fi Alliance. WPA is intended to replace the existing Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) standard, offering much more robust methods of encryption and authentication and resulting in a new level of protection for customers taking advantage of the wireless features of Windows XP. Sounds like the fix to one of my major problems with WPA encryption within WinXP, finding the connection disconnects (for whatever reason), then you have to reconnect manually. Hopefully from now on, that won't have to be the case!

I had the same problem until I fooled around with the settings. There was one particular check box that had to be either checked or unchecked and after I did that, I never got disconnected again.

Sorry that I don't remember the setting, but the patch should cure the connection ills.

Good catch!

As an FYI this is shaping up to be a critical patch for anyone who wants to use WPA. For me, it appears to have cleared up all oddities with using WPA over WEP, at least in the last few hours I've tested. Usually I've been getting random disconnects and problems within a few minutes (when using WEP the connection was fine, as a comparison).

Yes, this patch is dynamite. It fixed every WPA problem I've had with all adapters. I now have rock solid, persistent connections. And my connection speeds are now reporting higher and are confirmed as faster, even though I haven't changed the position of either the base station of receiving machine. Yay!

How is this different from Q815485? It was for WPA access too...

Think of it as this:

KB826942 replaces KB815485

That added Support to XP. This fixes bugs.
