boy the 3.8s were short lived
#2 acidbrnd on 05 Nov 2003 - 18:41
That's how it is going to be from here on. ATI has promised There customers a new set of Cats 12 times a year now. So figure every month they are going to have a new set ready for you with fixes and improvments. Personally I rather like this from ATI. Not only are the Drivers WHQL certified but they are also NOT BETA's which is how nVidia gets by without having to release WHQL drivers all the time.

COOL

ATI Drivers rule, with more releases I am expecting them to just get better and better!

NVIDIA better do somthing ATI drivers seem to be better everytime they are released whilst NVIDIAs drivers seem to be poorer everytime they are released and they are not that frequent either

If ATI offer a trade in i'm gonna give my card in (not really)

The 52.16 Nvidia drivers offered a nice improvement in most games
#5.3 rob.derosa on 05 Nov 2003 - 23:34
Didn't they sacrifice graphics to get the performance increases?
#5.4 Wildcard on 06 Nov 2003 - 01:19
Not that I can tell
#5.5 ANova on 06 Nov 2003 - 07:38
They created a compiler that converts the dx9 code into their own code which the NV3x was developed around.

Is there a Control panel with these drivers we should be downloading? On their web site it seems it has all been merged into one big 25 meg file while the Neowin download is opnly 7.5
#6.1 Arkayz on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:31
The 25 meg version on the ATI web site has the driver, control panel, and capture driver all in one file. The ones above are separate downloads.

Stil can't play Call of Duty Did anyone have success getting CoD working on the 3.9's? 3.7 works, 3.8 and 3.9 won't for me :/
#7.1 grimreaper on 05 Nov 2003 - 19:42
does ur monitor go black when playin CoD? mine does, man, so annoying.
#7.2 carpediem on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:07
Yes, it goes black and I can hear the sound on the first "car level" (3rd or something)
#7.3 sodapop on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:10
Mine too. I'm sooo pissed that this is the first game I have had trouble with, With an ATI card.

Can't even play a friggin game...
#7.4 Zatko55 on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:12
If COD hangs on your ATI card, disable Fast Write in ati menu and your bios.
#7.5 DaCypher on 05 Nov 2003 - 22:54
Oops, was thinking of different game...
#7.6 Ki||er on 05 Nov 2003 - 23:50
Works fine with me using the 3.8s on a 9800 all in wonder
#7.7 stncttr908 on 05 Nov 2003 - 23:53
Play the car ride level in safe mode, and then the rest should be alright. That's what I had to do. I can deal with minor bugs such as antialiasing not functioning or the occasional crash to the desktop, things which are common in many other games, but losing the monitor signal entirely is a bunch of bull****. If someone doesn't look into this issue in a relatively quick fashion, whether it be the game developers, Activision, or ATI, I'm going to be very dissatisfied.
#7.8 ClintEastman on 06 Nov 2003 - 11:12
Had the same problem, switching off Fast Write did the trick.....
#8 perochan on 05 Nov 2003 - 19:44

#10.1 nullie on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:42
HL engined based games run great here (nearly solid 100fps).
#10.2 bangbang023 on 05 Nov 2003 - 21:20
its a known issue though. many people are having poor performance issues
#10.3 RoboStac on 06 Nov 2003 - 14:18
ati_npatch 0

No idea what it does, but it changes my fps to 100 solid, compared to the 30-100 it fluctates with it on.
#11 seethru on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:39
hmm I didn't even think about fast write...I just downgraded to 3.7 from 3.8 and it worked better for me....I'll have to try that if it starts to happen again on these.
#12 [Dan] on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:47
The driver is dated 30th September, is that correct?
#13 chorpeac on 05 Nov 2003 - 20:51
I cant wait to get my 9800 Pro. I have been waiting for this beast for a while now!!! I have to check the mail again.

since 3.8, my the gfx on the system have had a very weird effect. Upon boot, everything graphically takes a long time to load up, the start bar, my icons, right-click context menus. At least I got past this by simpling changing from 60hz to 70hz, and then back to 60hz (I have an lcd)
#14.1 tylerctyler on 05 Nov 2003 - 22:44
Same here. Took me forever to get everything to work the way its supposed to. Be sure to follow directions in the driver readme file exactly. According to ATI's website, its a problem with the SMARTGART feature not working properly. Call of Duty runs "alright" for me . . . until I die. At that point the screen goes black and i have to reboot.

#17.1 Krankerz on 06 Nov 2003 - 14:41
Did you uninstall completely using the uninstaller tool provided by ATi, and then upgrade?
#18 no-sweat on 06 Nov 2003 - 03:48

After installing these drivers I lost the ability to run the resolution 1280x960 - anyone have any idea why? uggh.. and don't tell me to use 1280x1024 because 1280x960 is better because its 1.25 ratio vs 1.33... better aspect ratio... I went back to cat 3.8 and but the resolution was still gone ...uggh.. I have DDC disabled too .. any ideas.. grr
