Thanks to Riccardo for posting this

Although the Windows Update 4 beta is still in progress, Microsoft is preparing for the beta of its next generation Windows Update, version 5. The vision for Windows Update V5 is to provide an efficient and effective means to keep all Microsoft products secure and up to date with the latest patches, starting with Windows, Office, SQL, and Exchange.

Testers of the current Windows Update 4 beta should be automatically accepted onto the Windows Update 5 beta due to start before the end of the year. Those who test Windows Update 5 will also be testing the Service Pack 2 of Windows XP. Windows XP SP2 is set to include Windows Update 5 as part of ensuring systems are kept up to date and secure. There is no specific date for Windows XP SP2 Beta but it's expected to debut sometime in december.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com

the beta has its own special site, not that one.. it has content on it the live site doesnt have
#3 JoGro123 on 05 Nov 2003 - 21:29
It's an updated version 4 (version 4.1 if you will). There isn't too much new, most of it is actually new content.
#4 MrW on 05 Nov 2003 - 21:44
There isn't too much new except that you will be able to scan and get updates for all Microsoft products with Windows Update v5. The plan is to have one central location you go to for all your Microsoft updating needs.

Has anyone gotten a confirmation email stating their acceptance into the V5 Beta program? I have filled out two Nominations surveys on BetaPlace and haven't heard a thing. And yes, I am a V4 beta tester. Thanks in advance.

I just got confirmation from Lin that I am enrolled in version 5. With rest assured, I was told to be more patient
I believe that if you applied for it as an existing v4 beta testers, you will be automatically enrolled. Not email confirmation yet, but you sure are in their database.

One question about SP2: How will SP2 testers be able to install patches that's not included in SP2 into their systems?
#7.1 y_notm on 05 Nov 2003 - 23:41
are you suggesting there will be post-SP2 patches before SP2 has gone gold?

you do realize every fix between SP1 and SP2 will be in SP2, don't you?
#7.2 agressiv on 06 Nov 2003 - 02:43
Microsoft sets a cut-off date for what will be included in any service pack. At that point, no other updates other than bugfixes for the service pack itself will be included. So, yes, XP pre-SP3 hotfixes will be available long before SP2 ever comes out.
#7.3 y_notm on 06 Nov 2003 - 21:39
most pre-SP3 fixes will require SP2 though, just as most pre-SP2 updates require SP1

Awesome. Hey, that's me!
#9 defcon7 on 06 Nov 2003 - 03:02
Why is this awesome exactly? I downloaded the first release of XP SP2 and it was just awful... I hope this version is going to be a great deal more stable. Otherwise, you're going to see some very angry posts from some very angry testers.

i'm in the beta for v4 and i think they put all the office beta testers into the beta as well, since v5 will roll office update into windows update basically. this article says that the beta won't start till around the end of this year, so no rush really, when it comes it comes, but it will be exiciting to have a one stop shop for everything.
