A new processor driver is now available. This driver supports processor performance control via the processor objects defined in the ACPI 2.0 specification.

The benchmark updates tell us the following story, here compared with rival Xeons from Intel:

SPECint®_rate2000 2P Servers
Opteron 248 33.1 (109%)
Opteron 246 30.5 (100%)
Xeon 3.2 GHz (1 MB L3) 28.3 (93%)
Xeon 3.06 GHz (1 MB L3) 27.4 (90%)

The use of PC3200 memory gives, Opteron a further boost:

SPECfp®_rate2000 2P Servers
Opteron 248 31.6 (106%)
Opteron 246 29.9 (100%)
Xeon 3.2 GHz (1 MB L3) 21.1 (71%)
Xeon 3.06 GHz (1 MB L3) 20.8 (70%)

Xeon is not even in the same league, and its scaling is poor against Opteron.

SPECweb®99_ssl 2P Servers
Opteron 248 2240 (112%)
Opteron 246 2000 (100%)
Xeon 3.2 GHz (1 MB L3) 1440 (72%)
Xeon 3.06 GHz (1 MB L3) 1382 (69%)

SPECjbb®2000 Performance 1P Servers
Opteron 248 38222 (109%)
Opteron 246 35115 (100%)

Another solid Opteron showing. I couldn't find any recent submissions for Xeon, for some reason.

SPECjbb®2000 Performance 2P Servers
Opteron 248 64427 (106%)
Xeon 3.2 GHz (1 MB L3) 61096 (100%)
Opteron 246 60865 (100%)
Xeon 3.06 GHz (1 MB L3) 57653 (95%)

Xeon is now showing respectable performance, but it's still not good enough to overcome Opteron.

SPECjbb®2000 Performance 4P Servers
Opteron 848 113473 (105%)
Opteron 846 107786 (100%)
Xeon 2.8 GHz (2 MB L3) 94405 (88%)

Whats really cool is that Windows XP users will be able to upgrade to Windows XP 64-Bit edition for free in the form of a service pack!

EDIT: What I wrote above is a seperate issue, this news item is just a driver, not the actual service pack (which is still in Alpha I think)

What I don't understand is how ANYONE reading that would get the impression that it had anything to do with 64-bit support. This does nothing but add support for some new power saving features of the processor.

That article doesnt have much to do with 64-Bit support I admit but what I said is still relevant considering the topic of the news story.

I'm sure Athlon 64 owners (or perspecitive owners) would like to know about the 64 Bit upgrade to XP.

EDIT: Besides if you read what I wrote properly I didnt at any stage say that this "DRIVER" turns XP into 64-Bit edition.

The x86-64 os it just that an os! it is total seperate and as far as a I know it will not be a free upgrade nor will it be in the form of an service pack It has its own name (windows xp for 64 bit extended processors) or something like that

Think of it this way its in the same category as the itanuim IA64 xp os is it didnt come as a service pack to all the itanium owners

Do you really thing they could cram all the stuff to make a 64bit os in a service pack No were Ive read is it going to be a service pack upgrade i heard everywere that its a totaly new os read your news and get it straight

If I could I would scan the article for you (I might even do that when I get home).

Perhaps MS realises that people who have bought XP shouldnt have to pay for a 64 Bit version of what they already have. It makes sense to me.

MS is making a special version of Windos XP for 64bit extensions. You WILL have to buy it and it will not be offered as a free service pack. However for Windows 2003 Server there will be support for 64bit extensions in sp1.

Please provide a link to a reliable source for this info, if you can (and no, /. is not a reliable source). Until you do, you are talking out your A$$.

That is really cool that a service pack can be made to add 64bit enhancement just like that.
Quote this comment #3.1 Posted by roadwarrior on 18 Nov 2003 - 01:20
This has nothing to do with adding 64-bit enhancement to Windows XP, it simply adds support for some power saving features of the new processor.

Like I said above, I didnt say that this driver turns 32-Bit Windows XP in 64-Bit, all I did was mention a service pack that is apparently going to be made available (as stated by a popular magaziene that I collect)

I didn't know CPU is treated as external peripherals that needs drivers to work right...
Quote this comment #4.1 Posted by Stingray on 18 Nov 2003 - 01:22
It´s "just" software taking advantage of hardware special features. It´s also what drivers do.
Quote this comment #4.2 Posted by roadwarrior on 18 Nov 2003 - 01:44
Yep, the CPU shows up in Device Manager, therefore it has a driver. It has, IIRC, since Windows NT 4 (but not in the Win9x series).

It has nothing to do with 64-bit anything, read it first.
Quote this comment #5.1 Posted by Jelly2003 on 18 Nov 2003 - 03:21
For the last time, I DID read it first, I was just sharing some knowledge which I thought other people would appreciate. Perhaps YOU should read what I wrote first, I made no mention of this Driver turning XP into 64-Bit edition.

Perhaps YOU should note the time that his message was posted. It was BEFORE you started your rant about how you didn't say it had anything to do with 64-bit support (which you did). You are making yourself look like an idiot.

Where did it go? 1.1.0.0 is gone and now it's got a package that says v5.2.3790.4 which contains the v1.0.9.0 driver. Am I missing something here?

Well it's back up again. Their webmaster must be drunk...
