Neowin has taken an exclusive look at the new Hotmail which is due to launch within the month.

The interface is very similar to the existing Hotmail which most users use today. The major improvements from the beginning are spam reduction. The interface looks as close to Microsoft Outlook Web Access as you can get. Right clicking on folders doesn't produce the same result as Outlook Web Access but the general interface is identical. If you use Hotmail on the go and like to keep it synced up with your POP3 account with Contacts & Email then this new Hotmail is for you. You can import contacts from Outlook 2000/XP/2003 and Outlook Express 6 allowing users to swap Business contacts with Personal contacts.

Overall the new interface seems spam driven with the ability to keep messages in your Inbox down to contacts only etc. The interface when tested internally seems a lot faster than the current interface but this could be due to the servers it's currently on. We've taken a few basic screenshots to show you the new features of what to expect from the upgrade. The upgrade will also enable certain features that MSN Premium depends upon. MSN Premium is due to be released by Early 2004 combined with the Next Generation Hotmail which should go live to public servers within the month.

anyway, we can get to preview it as well? any links?
Quote this comment #7.1 Posted by Avenger on 20 Nov 2003 - 02:12
No point in posting the link for everyone. It hasn't gone public yet, and as such will not allow everyone to login on it (unless you have connections). Only authorized users, and those users know who they are.

I don't expect the new hotmail to look/behave the same in alternative browsers such as Firebird (not only l33t net surfers use them, but also Internet Kiosks and Internet Cafe's where people need to check their hotmail on their travels), but I sure hope that all the features are useable in it.

I don't know if this is possible creamhackered since you use IE, but would you be able to provide some screenshots in non-ie rendered browsers? It'll be interesting to see the difference

I like what I see, and I bet Microsoft will too.

its bullsh*t how often it uses javascript.
eg, to view a message, it links to: javascript:G('/cgi-bin/getmsg?msg=MSG1069288599')

this is gonna annoy me severely because i normally open several messages in new windows, so i can just close the windows and delete all messages in the inbox that are spam.

this spam filter better work! i see there's an option to delete junk mail immediately

the "contacts" section is good too [not that i think i'll be using it]. you can have "favorite" contacts, and import contacts, "build contacts", and "search directories"

#9, i dont think it will work anywhere near as good in non-IE browsers. i dont have any other browser installed, so i cant test it either.

What I am worry about is that, MS might start cornering us to pay fee on that one

If your creative & bored enough, find it out yourself. Not that it'll do you any good. It's not public yet.

Most likely before November ends or early December. They've been promoting this for more then a month, you must not have been viewing Neowin daily.

One thing I one to point out is that Hotmail has been doing a really great job in fighting SPAM. So, I hope they will improve that as well
Quote this comment #17.1 Posted by Avenger on 20 Nov 2003 - 03:04
You must have missed the preview of the Spam options for the new Hotmail. Go view the entire preview again.
Quote this comment #17.2 Posted by Crackler on 20 Nov 2003 - 03:27
If its anything like the spam filters in MSN 9, then it will be great. i get a ton of spam and 99% of it goes to the junk mail folder, and i have the filter set to "light".

More M$ trash I'm getting sick of hotmail spam and M$ selling email address without the asking. I got one account that I just open and did not give it out to no one but went I checked it I had over 20 spam mail in it
Quote this comment #18.1 Posted by Avenger on 20 Nov 2003 - 03:08
Set your email filter to "Exclusive" and then see how much Junk Email you get. MSN doesn't sell your address. The media would go crazy if they actually did that. Spammers simply Spam every possible combination that might work and they got lucky. No surprise.

Quote this comment #18.4 Posted by cork1958 on 20 Nov 2003 - 11:35
It's been like that forever, spam wise, that is. I have had 2 accounts just for testing purposes and NEVER given out the address. There were days when I received over 50 spams!! Hotmail is far from being hot at all. One of the worst web based e-mails in existence. Will NEVER use it again.
Quote this comment #18.5 Posted by kal-ky on 20 Nov 2003 - 11:52
Yep it's one of the worst and to believe people actually pay for this **** (see below). Unbelievable.

QUOTE (#18.2)
Sounds like your the hotmail expert on this

Not difficult to figure out.

The easier your email address is, the easier it is for Spammers to figure it out as well. Something long and complicated is much less likely to get Spammed, if it's not posted all over the Net anyway.
Quote this comment #18.7 Posted by alero on 02 Dec 2003 - 03:31
Ironic that I've done the same thing for 6 months and haven't gotten any messages - from anybody... spammer or otherwise.

I think some of you have to read the reg pages better and actually see the options you have checked, etc...

I've done multiple tests for spam on hotmail (@hotmail, and @msn.com) and various other e-mail compaines to see if any of the above posts hold up and they dont I get no junk.

I guess I'm just lucky.

Yes, you can still compose in HTML, and use the rich text editor. It is under "Tools".

Quote this comment #23.1 Posted by michaelward82 on 20 Nov 2003 - 15:16
And they should offer 2GB of inbox space for the price you're paying...

You must be paying what, $0.00/month for that service!
Quote this comment #23.2 Posted by helloalexb on 02 Dec 2003 - 01:56
rofl, yeah altezza there are so many other services that offer more then 2mb of free e-mail if you have a problem with hotmail's free service.....

I like the new look, but I don't see any really exciting features. Yeah, the 2mb limit is a beotch considering lycos has 5mb and my school email has 10mb
Quote this comment #25.1 Posted by Avenger on 20 Nov 2003 - 17:37
Well, Lycos and your schools email don't have nearly as many users as Hotmail has to support so that explains why Hotmail is more strict on limits.
Quote this comment #25.2 Posted by PROGAME on 20 Nov 2003 - 21:03
mail.com is probably the 2nd biggest free email provider, and they provide 10mb

What's "Microsoft Outlook Web Access"?
Quote this comment #26.1 Posted by Avenger on 21 Nov 2003 - 15:40
[Assuming your serious] It's the web version of MS Outlook 2003 so Exchange Server 2003 users can view their mail remotely over the web without having to actually have Outlook 2003 installed.

I just moved to fastmail. 10 MB, IMAP, auto check on POP3 and even SSL. Why should anyone use Hotmail instead?
