Dear Windows Update Beta testers:

Microsoft would like to invite you to participate in the Windows Security Update beta program. Microsoft is considering developing a CD that will provide the critical security updates found on the Windows Update website for computers running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, Windows ME (Millennium Edition). This security update CD will be of special benefit to customers with slow internet connections and for those customers who typically do not visit the Microsoft website to download updates for their computers. For preliminary testing, we would like to ensure that the older machines, specifically those running Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition & Windows ME (Millennium Edition) installed, will be compatible with all of the critical security updates included on the CD. To accomplish this, we would appreciate your assistance in participating in our one time beta program.

Our goal is to have a well targeted group of testers willing to actively participate and provide useful feedback to our development team. Your feedback will be critical to the success of our product. If you are interested in participating, please use this special guest account below to access a nomination survey on http://www.BetaPlace.com.

Guest Beta ID: betaupdate

The Beta Nomination Survey will be available until Friday December 5th.

Why has this been posted on the frontpage including the guest ID when the e-mail says confidential and has already been removed from BPN?

How about some consistency!

I bet you will never get accepted if you're not in the Windows Update v4 Beta anyways (but I don't know if they will blacklist anyone who register with that guest ID and not supposed to get the ID)

I thought that they wernt going to support these older products anymore? They cut 95 off like 4 years ago, You'd think 98 would have followed. I guess cause of all the worms going around they're souping security up again but still...

I thought that just meant you couldn't call them and get tech support on those products anymore. A lot of people are still running 98, so not providing critical updates would be kind of stupid of them. You can still go to Windows Update with Windows 98 and download all of the existing updates, so why not make them available on CD also.

hotfixes are included in what microsoft calls "support". the reason 98 is supported and 95 isn't is because 95 has reached EOL (end of life) while 98 hasn't. win98 will reach EOL next year i think, and hopefully they'll make an exception for windows me and cancel it early

Neowin cuts off threads that don't deserve to be cut off in the forums, yet they post confidential information from Microsoft AND Beta Login ID's.

Tisk...

Exactly. It appears that iexbeta will be the one in trouble over this.

iexbeta might be in trouble for posting the guest id, but neowin's not helping at all by spreading it, they're just fanning the flames...

No, a member here posted a thread about his and was grilled for it which to me was absolutely stupid.

Funny thing is, a mod closed the thread and yet Admin posts it on main news.

To me, i see no reason why not to post it on main news, since it is a guest ID.

Also, you can bitch all you want about the information contained in the email should not be forwarded beyond the recipients mailbox. Now forwarding to me means email forwarding. Doesnt mean copying the text by other means.

And also, some people should just lighten up and get laid FFS.

Just like it says you could at least respect Microsoft on this one, but no one does now a days huh. If you were supposed to get the e-mail you would have otherwise stay out.

Sent this e-mail to Microsoft BetaPlace...

"Do you mind if the beta invitations are posted on news sites as long as they do not include any guest ids? By the way the Beta Test Windows Security Update CD for Win9X has been posted at http://board.iexbeta.com/ibf10/index.php?s=d85f901e22e93b5aa3d0976edb7fdf12&showtopic=34116 and http://www.neowin.net/comments.php?id=15413&category=main. Maybe a set of rules posted on the front page of the beta place is in need, that tells use everything we can and can't do."

...and got this responce....
