Microsoft. Love em or hate em, they market themselves and their products extremely well - if they didn't, you'd not know, or care about Longhorn. Longhorn. It's 3 years from release, yet the mania for all new releases is as intense as Beatlemania was at it's peak. 64-bit processors. Once the territory of only the server, it's now building momentum (after the false start by Intel's crippled pacer of a processor called Itanium) in an exponential explosion catalysed by AMD's Athlon and Athlon FX 64-bit superstars.

Testing of the latest generation of Microsoft's Windows Longhorn Professional 64-bit for AMD build 4051 (yes, the PDC 64-bit release) is yours for the asking - BUT - this release is ONLY for those of you who chose to ride the ragged edge of raw computing muscle, the Ferrari of processors, the Athlon and AlthonFX 64-bit processor clan. Some of us with the effervescent Opteron may also wish to indulge, whilst those of you who are quietly pasturising your Itaniums, don't worry, we won't tell anyone on you...

GSpot is a tool that can tell you exactly which codecs are needed to play a certain video file. This is very helpful when you have troubles playing a video file.
You can choose between the two different XviD decoders via the startmenu shortcuts that will be created during the installation. When you have problems with the current active one, then switching to the other one usually solves your problems.
DirectVobSub is a tool for displaying subtitles. Your subtitle file should have the same filename as your video file (for example Movie.avi and Movie.sub) and should be in the same folder as your video file. Then the subtitles will automatically be displayed in most players. FourCC Code Changer is a program for changing the FourCC code of a video file. The FourCC code is used to identify which codec should be used to decode the file. This tool is for expert users only. Matrix Mixer can be used to amplify the sound of a video file. It also can mix stereo sound to multiple channels (useful for 4.1 or higher speaker sets). Morgan Multimedia Stream Switcher can be used to switch between two audio streams in a video file that has two audio streams. These types of video files are not very common. BSplayer also has this functionality built-in. So if you use BSplayer, you don't need to install this.
DivX Anti-Freeze is not compatible with Windows Movie Maker. So don't install it if you use Movie Maker. It's not possible to install both the Ligos and the Elecard MPEG-2 decoders at the same time, because that would result in neither of them working. So you can only install one of them.

Just FYI Voodoo, no use linking to the screenshots directly, winbeta.org redirects it back to their home page to stop people from leeching.

#2.3 FISKER_Q on 01 Dec 2003 - 00:32

Anyone know if the theme in screenshot 2? Is that a default theme or something from StyleXP or the like?
#5.1 Hatez on 29 Nov 2003 - 11:08
It's longhorn's default called "Slate", and I believe there's some ports floating about.
(5 replies) #6 dougkinzinger on 29 Nov 2003 - 11:05
That's great, but what's "Lonhorn"
#6.1 kairon on 29 Nov 2003 - 14:22

Presenting Longhorn 64-bit. 64 ugly bits.
#10.1 jagedEdge on 29 Nov 2003 - 12:56
Eh, the Windows zealots are probably gonna come in and say "That's a freakin' placeholder you dumbass!".
#10.2 Mav Phoenix on 29 Nov 2003 - 20:24
You don't have to be a zealot to understand that it is in fact a placeholder...
#11 oDD on 29 Nov 2003 - 13:01
OMG its Windows!
#12 Ifoow on 29 Nov 2003 - 13:28
Eww it's just like windows XP with an ugly skin
#13 kairon on 29 Nov 2003 - 14:22
So are you all happy to see it now that you see it looks just like any 32-bit longhorn?
(4 replies) #14 Morphie on 29 Nov 2003 - 14:35
It actually looks like M$'s failed attempt @ copying OSX's brushed metal UI components. I love it when they try to make UI's. They always need a good skinning. It's worse than their OSX WMP UI. It is going to be funny in 3 years when they release an OS that should have come out this year.
#14.1 Spectre on 29 Nov 2003 - 15:39
what the hell are you talking about? this doesn't look anything like brushed metal. if anything, it looks like some parts of luna have been replaced by early concepts of a new theme for the tier 1 experience of longhorn (by the grey server scheme, anyway). but i guess microsoft could shower you apple fanboys in gold and you would still say it's ****, so there's no point in me trying to convince you, is there.
#14.2 net-cruizer on 29 Nov 2003 - 17:04
lol, it doesn't look anything like Crapple. I'm sure if MS wanted a brushed look, they'd be able to make an awsome one.
Personally, I think that Longhorn vs looks horrible though.
Plex was nice though. But default Luna and Metallic are the best ever.
#14.3 bogd on 30 Nov 2003 - 12:40
actually, any Windows user who has been on an Apple computer for more than 5 minutes can see the similarities between the Longhorn "placeholder silver look," and Mac OS X Panther's Finder and iApps. All it is, is brushed metal without the brush. Launch iTunes for Windows and you'll see it, and if you can't, then you're blind.
#14.4 Miran on 30 Nov 2003 - 20:58
I wonder where Apple stole the brushed metal look from? lol.. probably xerox PARC.
#15 markjensen on 29 Nov 2003 - 16:29
Ummm... I think there is an awful lot being read into these. They are screenshots fercryinoutloud!
#16 VikingStorm on 29 Nov 2003 - 17:36
Actually the screenshots themselves are so unnewsworthy... they don't really prove anything to tell you the truth.
#17 hao2lian on 29 Nov 2003 - 17:51
Ahhhh, brushed.
#18 myie2_user on 29 Nov 2003 - 17:54
I hope the look changes, I am not fan of that that "circus" looking star...
#19 slapnuts_ox on 29 Nov 2003 - 21:31
i think longhorn looks ugly as anything but it is only an alpha so i expect it to look bad. im sure by the time MS is done it will look a lot better.....hopefully this time though it won't look like MS hired fisher price to design the final look.
#20 Beast_4thHM on 29 Nov 2003 - 22:09
wow... I dont believe the neowinians dunno that there supposed to be a diffrent GUI
one thats is not yet released
(6 replies) #21 JoGro123 on 29 Nov 2003 - 22:52
I love how the screenshots show the 64 bit edition of a current development, designed to showcase that the operating system can run on a variety of platforms and all you guys talk about is the skin. This isn't even a main lab build meaning it doesn't even have any of the new user interface elements involved.
#21.1 Beast_4thHM on 29 Nov 2003 - 23:20
Thats EXACTLY what I'm thinking.
#21.2 Spectre on 30 Nov 2003 - 00:00
MS bashers carefully evaluate each post for negative things to flame about. when screenshots of unfinished visual styles are posted, they flame it as ugly and that it can never beat OSX. when MS does, in fact, release material of a kick ass UI (some blurry aero videos were posted a while ago) they flame it because apple had a hardware accelerated UI first and because graphics aren't important when there are so many security holes (it's not like there aren't many security holes in osx or linux, but that is a different issue). no matter what MS does, fanboys will ALWAYS find a way to flame it to hell. it's depressing, especially when this website is called neowin.
#21.3 markjensen on 30 Nov 2003 - 00:45
Well, I think that (in general) this is a pretty well-balanced site. It's called Neowin, but it runs Apache & phpnuke on Linux. There are articles about the various OSes out there.

On the other hand, there are the fringes from both sides that blindly defend their OS of choice and use personal attacks (which are never appropriate).

Treat it like Playboy. Read the articles, look at the pretty pics, and enjoy.
#21.4 Buttseh on 30 Nov 2003 - 10:26
phpnuke? Erm... No. It runs off of VirtuaNews as far as I can tell. http://virtuanews.co.uk
#21.5 markjensen on 30 Nov 2003 - 12:21
Oops! My bad. I don't much care for phpnuke. It look very amateurish..
#21.6 Buttseh on 30 Nov 2003 - 15:11
Yah, I've never really cared for phpnuke, far too overdone IMo
#22 shift on 30 Nov 2003 - 02:43
