Is Redmond doing enough to push the technology?

Acer is locked in a struggle with Microsoft over the future of the Tablet PC.
The PC and electronics vendor is convinced that Microsoft is not doing all it can to push the technology.

Jim Wong, president of the Acer IT products business group, complained that the situation was "a mess". Acer has invested heavily in the Tablet PC market, selling a range of four models.

"We are disappointed in the market. We believe it will happen, but it will happen too late. We keep on challenging Microsoft," he said.

Wong believes that a lack of applications is the root of the problem, with application vendors having to wait for Microsoft to fully commit itself to the Tablet.

"Microsoft has to communicate with the channels and the users. Once people try it, they appreciate it," he said. But, he added, Microsoft must kick-start the process and get people trying out Tablets.

Sniper Boomslang 2100 @ envynews
“Fast forward to the second half of 2003. Lake Bluff, Ill.-based BFG Technologies, Inc. announces that the Boomslang is back...for real this time. You know BFG as the folks who produce the Asylum line of NVIDIA- based video cards. As a company that prides itself on making products for the gamer, bringing back the Boomslang seemed like a logical expansion of its product line. Dubbed the Sniper Boomslang 2100, the latest revision of this mouse is geared for the gamer who demands absolute precision, especially in first-person shooter titles."

NextBase MDV1 Small Form Factor DVD Player Review @Tweaknews.net
"Not only was the player physically robust, but its feature list would go toe to toe with any normal DVD player on the market. As stated earlier, the visual and audio quality were flawless and you would never tell the difference when compared to the bigger alternative."

HardwareHell: DFI Lanparty 865PE Review
"Following on from the Direct X 9.0 3DMark 03, I used my personal favourite test: Aquamark 3. Although the games based on the engine were not very successful, I think that the benchmark is very impressive. Happily I can say that both boards got the exact same score in this test! Good work from the DFI Lanparty. "

#2.1 darksoul on 01 Dec 2003 - 22:53
how much does it cost? i believe the real cost in tablet pcs comes with the display and pen technology, not the OS. But man you are damn cool for blindly hating MS. can you say BAAHH you ****ing sheep

If we're going to argue, let's not make personal attacks, ok?
#2.3 JaggedFlame on 02 Dec 2003 - 06:14
Personal attacks are inherent in a public medium like the Internet. Get used to it.

But not here at Neowin. We have rules, follow them.

i tried using one. and i love it.

shame sony don't make one. i did like the hp but i just don't buy hp stuff.
#3.1 MikeS2k on 02 Dec 2003 - 14:45
Why not? Because there's no "Sony" badge on it?
#3.2 AdamField on 05 Dec 2003 - 10:50
There are only actually 2 or 3 actual tablet manufacturers.

The HP TC1000, for example, is made by LG.

I had one for about 9 months and I loved the OS but I gad to get rid of it because the transmeta cpu was just so sloooooooooooooooooowww

I see there is new version out that has a 'real' CPU in it

The reason I'm not buying one is that none have a 3d accelereator... almost all have integrated graphics. Since Longhorn will basically requier a 3D acclerator (D3D will be the drawing engine), it would be a waste of an investment.

Give me a tablet pc and 3d accelerator.... i'm buying. I don't see any other reason not to buy one.

MMMMMMMM....... Onenote

Well, the compaq one comes with a nvidia chip...

Besides, who doesn't get new machines every 3 years or so? LH is still that far out.
#4.2 stewright on 02 Dec 2003 - 09:22
That's an insane reason not to buy a tablet pc in my mind.

For one as SomeDork says the likelyhood of you still using that machine in 3 or so years time when LH comes out is quite low and anyway you can always run LH in a lower spec mode if you wish, all the hardware acceleration is going to do is drain your batteries in no time at all.

Maybe Acer should look at all of the other reasons as to why tablets failed over the years? Weight and power and bulk in a machine that's as pricy as a good speed notebook? Or maybe people can typically type faster than they write these days so a lack of a keyboard is a huge problem?

I use a Sony Vaio (Z1A) and I'd be lost without the keyboard. While I thought the touch screen/stylus was really neat on Tablet XP, it's just simply not a replacement for a keyboard (and if Acer's have a keyboard then that's great but I recall that they don't) not to mention that the Tablets are often underpowered, compared to regular notebook. If they released a full blown notebook (running the Tablet XP mod) with a touch screen as an additional feature, then it would be great but a tablet on it's own can't survive, especially since they're as pricy as a full notebook. Besides, when was the last time you heard HP or IBM complain that their funky designs didn't sell well, because MS didn't release enough applications? Tablet XP runs normal XP apps - it's not like the PocketPC/Windows CE bit...

And OneNote works pretty freakin' well with XP-Pro so I doubt that's a reason to change machines

Well all the Acers (as far as I know and can see from their site) are convertible tablets having a keyboard readily available. The original tablet from acer when it came out was small and underpowered, I agree. They then brought out an updated version with the new centrino processor so it got a massive power boost.

Now they have the C300 Series (1.7GHz and higher centrino), which I think should satisfy your need for a fully blown notebook.

When I saw resolution I thought it was literally the resolution of the tablet pcs. I can't find one with a resolution above 1024x768. I don't think I can work at that resolution anymore. Oh well, next time I will RTFA before I draw conclusions.
