Hotmail has updated its public servers to the Next-Gen Hotmail as planned. This means MSN Premium can rely on Hotmails backend for some of its various services.

There are no changes from the Hotmail described in MSNs own preview or the one we demo'd ourselves. Expect MSN Premium within the month :)

Sniper Boomslang 2100 @ envynews
“Fast forward to the second half of 2003. Lake Bluff, Ill.-based BFG Technologies, Inc. announces that the Boomslang is back...for real this time. You know BFG as the folks who produce the Asylum line of NVIDIA- based video cards. As a company that prides itself on making products for the gamer, bringing back the Boomslang seemed like a logical expansion of its product line. Dubbed the Sniper Boomslang 2100, the latest revision of this mouse is geared for the gamer who demands absolute precision, especially in first-person shooter titles."

NextBase MDV1 Small Form Factor DVD Player Review @Tweaknews.net
"Not only was the player physically robust, but its feature list would go toe to toe with any normal DVD player on the market. As stated earlier, the visual and audio quality were flawless and you would never tell the difference when compared to the bigger alternative."

HardwareHell: DFI Lanparty 865PE Review
"Following on from the Direct X 9.0 3DMark 03, I used my personal favourite test: Aquamark 3. Although the games based on the engine were not very successful, I think that the benchmark is very impressive. Happily I can say that both boards got the exact same score in this test! Good work from the DFI Lanparty. "

Here is a change that wasn't notice:

User with a email @msn.com (like me), we now have more option...

What I mean is back then, I didn't had the "Change Password" option, or the "Secret Question" or the "My Profile" option... There was one on sign in, but after that, like for my profile, I needed to pass through msn messenger...

For changing my password, I had to use the "I forgot my password" so I was able to change my password
#8 newsgeek on 01 Dec 2003 - 21:46
This must've been why I was having trouble logging in earlier.

I thought there was a calendar feature....does it not appear if you have the free e-mail account?
#16.1 vetMr magoo on 01 Dec 2003 - 22:18
you have to pay $$$$ for it.
#16.2 Greenstein on 01 Dec 2003 - 23:56
Can you believe that?!?!?!?!?
#16.3 Avenger on 02 Dec 2003 - 05:32
MSN Calendar was converted to MSN IA (people who subscribe to MSN as an ISP) users only a few months ago. It wasn't a widely used feature so it was decided to change it to pay users only. For some reason, once MSN did that, the userbase for MSN Calendar increased too.
#16.4 ben_b on 03 Dec 2003 - 15:09
It is a payed feature and for those of you that do pay and don't see it, rumors are its not quite ready yet it will be out soon
#17 sclar on 01 Dec 2003 - 22:15

Doesn't work very well using Mozilla Firebird... Looks weird!
(2 replies) #26 Samoa on 01 Dec 2003 - 23:25
Really nice, I like it.

btw, stop using Mozilla and Firbird, and Opera, they suck. IE rulez!!!
#26.1 PeterHammer on 02 Dec 2003 - 00:04
Actually I was pretty impressed that this version works well with Mozilla 1.5. The only glitches I noticed were the mouse cursors. (I hate how IE uses the non-standard cursor as opposed to the regular pointer CSS style. It supports both!) They even took care to make it work with non IE browsers (eg It uses alert messages as opposed to the spiffy IE Web Dialogs when presenting confirmation dialogs.) On the look and feel side, they are identical. Side by side, mozilla and IE render the page identically.

All in all - nice work. (Though I was surprised to note that the code is not XHTML compliant. For that matter, Hotmail does not even specify a DocType. Interesting given all their propaganda about its importance on MSDN)
#26.2 stezo2k on 02 Dec 2003 - 00:11
Samoa, that was lamest comment on this subject, not much wrong with opera/firebird, quite a lot wrong with IE, especially security issues
#27 A-Parsa on 01 Dec 2003 - 23:28

Hotmail is still working out all the bells and whisles. So please wait patiently. By tomorrow, all of you will be able to access the MSN Hotmail server without a problem. . BTW, I like it too!

it sucks. i cant open different emails in new windows
(2 replies) #34 mikey1001 on 02 Dec 2003 - 01:16
I think it's an improvement, especially this:
"You are currently using 1.3 MB of your 10.0 MB of available storage."
I had to always watch to keep it under the two megs but now they upped to ten for free, so I'm fine with that!
#34.1 bleepjay on 02 Dec 2003 - 02:02
I still only have 2. Are you a paying member of hotmail or msn?
#35 philmcneal on 02 Dec 2003 - 01:44
sweet 8 megs more space
#36 [Thrice] on 02 Dec 2003 - 02:08

#37 kirk26 on 02 Dec 2003 - 02:19
Not much different in terms of appearence, but a little better.
#38 Quick Reply on 02 Dec 2003 - 02:20
has anyone tried using their bug reporting form? it's ridiculous... It lists every single OS including commodore and amiga (yer... i think im going to visit hotmail on one of those) and every single browser including Opera and Mosiac, but No Firebird/Mozilla.

Here's the bug report on Bug Reporting I sent:
QUOTE
Bug Reporter Form-

This form doesn't provide an accurate bug report...

Browser- doesn't have myIE2, Avant Browser, Mozilla, Mozilla Firebird, Links/Lynx or Arachne.

Operating System- Apart from not having OS X, it lists some OSs that don't have internet capabilities- Amiga & Commodore (DOS *CAN* have internet, although it is extremely unlikely)

Kind of problem- The choices here are very limited, there should be an "other" selection

ISP- Hotmail isn't limited to US residents, where is "Other" or "Non-US" options, Telstra hardly falls under "Local ISP"

Java- Don't you mean Javascript? Java and Javascript arn't the same (And technically many will have it off, because Windows XP SP1a ships without Java)

Error Recieved- If we got one of these error messages, why would we need to send a bug report?? Obviously something else happened or we didn't recieve an error message, how about "Other" or "Not Applicable" options too?

people with an attitude like yours are the cause of worms like blaster, sql slammer, and other problems on the internet...

WHAT???
#41 Jason Roberts on 02 Dec 2003 - 05:05
Looks nice! Very easy to browse around. The site is ok. No problems. I've even tried running it on Mozilla Firebird but no problems as well.
#42 Hum on 02 Dec 2003 - 05:08
The new Hotmail is confusing, harder to use, and just plain sucks.
#43 DsnBehind on 02 Dec 2003 - 06:02
The new look sucks, but the home page (after signing in) is now less of a giant ad.
#44 obake on 02 Dec 2003 - 06:28
Did anybody else have the problem of Hotmail deleting all of their e-mails?

Fortunately, I had them backed up on my comp (thanks to Thunderbird), but I'm still pretty pissed.

****ing a-holes.
#45 dotto on 02 Dec 2003 - 06:48
Looks nice, but it's hardly revolutionary
#46 Chick on 02 Dec 2003 - 06:54
The ability to view your Hotmail from Outlook XP is gone!

I belive the problem is a new address for Hotmail.

Anyone found a work around yet?
#47 iron2000 on 02 Dec 2003 - 07:02
Just went in my Hotmail account and everything looked different.

Its nice!

where the fu*** is the calendar ....i'm a paid subscriber to MSN Software!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#48.1 aereux on 02 Dec 2003 - 08:09
calendar.msn.com
#48.2 BGuillaume on 02 Dec 2003 - 08:52
well they should have had a tab for MSN Software subscribers next to the Mail tab....like in demo. calendar.msn.com goes to the old website
#48.3 Avenger on 02 Dec 2003 - 15:11
"Change tabs to Home, Inbox, Compose, Calendar (when available) and Contacts." Note the "When available" refrence to Calendar. That explains the missing Tab.
#49 Khanivor on 02 Dec 2003 - 09:40
Well I like it, nothing amazing but it's nice to have something fresh to look at after all these years of the same screen. I also like the way you can import contacts.

Has anyone found out a way to import your hotmail contacts into office 2k3?
#50 BGuillaume on 02 Dec 2003 - 09:43
you need Outlook Connector. A tool that's gonna be part of MSN Premium package in like a month. Also if you are a MSN 8 subcriber you can already use Intellisync for MSN , even though....problem of compatibility have often been reported
#51 Riggs on 02 Dec 2003 - 11:53
I like it because it's not so cluttered now. Still, I don't use it all that much due to the fact that I can check my hotmail in OE.
#52 BGuillaume on 02 Dec 2003 - 12:12
Well you'll soon have to pay to check your email thru a client. Here whar was n Neowin few weeks ago:

MSN Hotmail Extra Storage is changing this winter. MSN are opening new subscription based services for those wanting extra storage for their Hotmail accounts. 4 New options have been revealed for MSN Hotmail customers. The MSN Hotmail Extra Storage 10MB, 25MB, 50MB and 100MB. Each subscription is anual and contains the ability to send larger attachments, access to the Hotmail mailbox via Outlook or Outlook Express, exemption from the account expiration policy, and 30 MB of MSN Groups storage. Each subscription also comes with its relevant amount of Hotmail space.

The prices of each service are layed out below:

MSN Hotmail Extra Storage 10MB = yearly subscription of $19.95 plus tax
MSN Hotmail Extra Storage 25MB = yearly subscription of $29.95 plus tax
MSN Hotmail Extra Storage 50MB = yearly subscription of $39.95 plus tax
MSN Hotmail Extra Storage 100MB = yearly subscription of $59.95 plus tax

Update:
MSN9 subscribers will get 25MB of Extra Storage and will be able to send up to 10MB attachments. Also, access to hotmail via Outlook/Outlook Express is likely to be blocked if you're not a subscriber.

Me likes! Is faster
(2 replies) #54 fiz on 02 Dec 2003 - 13:06
Nice new look, but I can only open one message at the same time!!!
#54.1 nathanintu on 02 Dec 2003 - 13:20
Hotmail Navigation in your Hotmail options

Hotmail’s Today, Mail, Calendar (when available) and Contacts tabs help you understand where to go for particular tasks or information. If you prefer, you may change to the tabs used in previous versions.

This might help you
#54.2 miketong on 03 Dec 2003 - 06:07
You can only open one email because the links have been changed from standard a href links to javascript links. I've made a script that will convert these links back to regular old links so you can open emails in a new window. If you don't know how to create a bookmarklet from the script below look here:

Bookmarklet site

or email me.

javascript: (function(){a = document.getElementsByTagName('A');for (i=0; i< a.length; i++) {if (a[i].href.substr(0,13) == 'javascript:G(' ){a[i].href = a[i].href.substring(14,a[i].href.length - 2);}}})()

Just one click once the page has loaded and all the links will be automatically converted. Still wish MS would fix this but this is a good work around.
(1 reply) #55 nathanintu on 02 Dec 2003 - 13:23
The flash movie shows POP mail, is that only for paid subscribers?
#55.1 Avenger on 02 Dec 2003 - 14:58
Of course. POP3 options are currently only for paid subscribers.
#56 BGuillaume on 02 Dec 2003 - 13:42
Thanks for the Calendar infos. Well the flash movie also showed the Calendar tabs which is for subscribers so they might as well show the pop button...I just posted an old Neowin info, doesnt mean it's gonna be like that but well...
(1 reply) #57 Compkid2005 on 02 Dec 2003 - 23:53
New Calendar is online! You have to access it at calendar.msn.com until they add the tab in hotmail.
#57.1 oqwarrior on 03 Dec 2003 - 14:34
Thanks for the info. Hopefully they'll add the tab soon, because every time you click out of Calendar, you can no longer access it unless you go back to calendar.msn.com.
#58 speedy_kevin on 03 Dec 2003 - 18:49
I needed to search all the buttons again :p

And no I won't stop using Opera (Do not turn this into another 'wich browser is the best' crap)
#59 helloalexb on 03 Dec 2003 - 20:32
:sigh: and now no delete button on the bottom of every e-mail....and was change really needed?
#60 oqwarrior on 03 Dec 2003 - 21:18
Looks like they have enabled the Calendar tab for subscribers/testers.
