Kazaa Lite shut down

Advertisement (Why?)
The Kazaa Lite K++ project has been shut down by Sharman Networks on grounds of copyright infringement.

The project, which had been set up to block spy and ad ware within the Kazaa Media Desktop Program has achieved notoriety within the P2P world through its simplistic approach and success in reverse engineering the Kazaa application.

However, the program infringed on the copyright of Sharman Networks, the company that now own and program the Kazaa Media Desktop application, after the purchase of the code and copyright in 2002. The FastTrack (Kazaa) network is financed through advertising systems, which Kazaa Lite K++ does not include, and so was seen as a threat by the owners.

Sharman have threatened legal action, and ordered that the offending content be removed from the official Kazaa Lite sites, including http://www.kazaalite.tk/ which now contains no reference to the existance of the application.

I'm kind of suprised it went on as long as it did.

yea, i used to like kazaa before everyone adn their mother used it, i remember back when you could search on the kazaa page for files and get http downloads i liked that it was fast and i could use a dl manager, im sure though someone else will make another p2p program

idiots! don't they realise by shutting down Kazaa its going to lose the majority of its users. reason people moved to Kazaa Lite was because of it blocking the stupid spycrap!
#3.1 xStainDx on 06 Dec 2003 - 21:23
you do realize not everyone who uses kazaa (the uninformed user) doesn not use Kazaa lite.
#3.2 raekwon on 07 Dec 2003 - 06:16
K-Lite will continue to work. development has just stopped.
#3.3 carstereos on 07 Dec 2003 - 07:30
Only if people support supernode in thier KazaaLite. Read post 17.2
#3.4 darksoul on 07 Dec 2003 - 15:39
so your saying all of the people who are basically stealing bandwidth because they don't look at the adds or have the othersoftware (read: spyware) that pays for the service will not log on? For some reason i think that was the whole point of this move.

Not necessarily -- all it takes to Sharman Netowrks is to make the FT network incompatible, right?

Or am I missing something?

It's not like people are going to transition back to KaZaA.
#4.1 roadwarrior on 07 Dec 2003 - 01:51
Yeah, but at least the people on K-Lite won't be using up resources on their networks anymore without seeing the ads, etc. That is still better for their bottom line.

Who says no one will still be using KaZaA Lite? I still have a copy of the installation file, and plan to keep using it.
#4.3 mark03 on 07 Dec 2003 - 11:52
yup, i kept my installation file too long live k-lite
#4.4 READY2FIGHT on 12 Aug 2004 - 05:43
Hello, does anyone still have a kazaa lite installation file? If you do would you please email me with it or information on how to get it. No questions asked, and all help is greatly appreciated. CONGONOW@AOL.COM

Kazaa Lite will live on. Maybe on a different name, maybe by different programmers, but it will live.

I would be using DC++ right now, but unfortunately finding stuff is hard with that.

I use Earthstation V at the moment, though obviously it doesn't have anywhere near as much as as kazaa does. I've never actually used Kazaa. It's always been some form of Kazaalite. Grokster used to be ok. But not only is it loaded with spyware now, but it sometimes corrupts XP.
#5.3 Jugalator on 07 Dec 2003 - 17:24
I'm up/downloading at 200 KB/sec with BitTorrent. :-)

Hrm, I seem to find what im looking for, Just need to search arround try http://www.hublist.org or try getting different public hub list, look for a hub name of intrest, yes its a little harder then kazaa (lite) but as anyone who does "underground" file sharing its known that times have changed, and it will get harder but don't loose faith. Just make the adjustments needed. Together we will always be one step ahed of big corps. now as for K-lite I am keeping My installer lets hope the shermon network doesnt change anything that will make k-lite unusable
#6 hotrod on 06 Dec 2003 - 21:30
Kazaa lite will still be all over the net for peeps to download and i doubt there were any major changes coming for KL in the near future so oh well.....
Honestly I hate using anyting on the Kazaa network, there are SO many bs files out there that idiots name wrong, contain virus, etc.. think i'll stick to bittorrent..

Kazaa has sucked since day one. Why anyone uses it anymore is beyond me.
Bittorrent is the only efficient fast way of downloading your files. It's just hard to find older stuff on Trackers.
#9.1 GSDragoon on 06 Dec 2003 - 21:44

#9.2 Rivers on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:06

Bit torrent is THE best
#9.3 GSDragoon on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:59
The good thing about torrent is that I prevents leeching. You have to share in order to download.
#9.4 TGD on 07 Dec 2003 - 00:52
When Kazaa came out, people were asking why anyone would use Napster. Whenever a newer, more effective P2P comes out, people are going to say it's better than the old one. Just because BT is "better" than Kazaa doesn't change the fact that, in it's day, Kazaa was (and still is) popular, and many people like(d) it.

Not everyone can download torrents. My ISP caps me as soon as they see me download a torrent. Even if its legit they don't like the uploading done.

There is a certain irony in a company that distributes software that 99% of the time is used to infringe copyrighted songs or movies, being so concerned with people infringing THEIR copyright!

#13.3 PatrynXX on 07 Dec 2003 - 15:08
WinMX is just horrible. nothing ever downloads from there. In one week I got one song. ESV is a little better, though some of their builds are a pain.
#13.4 redFX on 08 Dec 2003 - 13:37
WinMX has gotten bad. Its always full. You can rarely download anything.
#14 isus on 06 Dec 2003 - 21:49
interesting to see how a p2p client that is used 99.9% to break a copyright, uses a copyright infringement law to stop klite.

i wonder how much this will affect ft... maybe they will drop enough for kazaa to realize how stupid they are and either let the klite team back, or maybe ft as a whole will disappear. i'm hoping ft disappears, it has sucked forever.
#15 slang123 on 06 Dec 2003 - 21:54
Anyway, the latest kazaa lite is all i need. It fixed and added everything i wanted so no big deal
Unless they somehow block it :s

#16.1 i like chips on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:01
bull****, bittorrent does not always give you "fast downloads" .... i've downloaded many a things using bittorrent and half the time i can barely hit 10k/sec.....i blame this on the leechers who cap their upload speeds. greedy ****ers.
#16.2 ubugmetoo on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:04
I always get atleast 20k unless the torrent is about dead.
#16.3 stezo2k on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:09
ive always got around the 40kbs mark, sometimes even more on turbobt
#16.4 obake on 06 Dec 2003 - 22:59
I usually get less than 10kb/s. Any advice on how to speed it up?
#16.5 Octol on 06 Dec 2003 - 23:09
From the Merriam-Webster Dictionary: Torrent

Main Entry: tor·rent
Pronunciation: 'tor-&nt, 'tär-&nt
Function: noun
1 : a tumultuous outpouring : RUSH
2 : a violent stream of a liquid (as water or lava)
3 : a channel of a mountain stream

10kb/s is a torrent?
#16.6 i like chips on 07 Dec 2003 - 00:10
it's funny how many pr0n sites show up when you google the word "torrent"
#16.7 noll3095 on 07 Dec 2003 - 01:06
What? How do you guys get such low speeds? I hit my cap almost all the time at 400kB/s, a slow one is 200kB/s.
#16.8 i like chips on 07 Dec 2003 - 01:47
it's weird, the more popular a torrent the slower download speeds I get. really odd :/
#16.9 Zubby on 07 Dec 2003 - 04:30
This is for OBake.

Bittorrent as you know monitors your upload and download at the tracker(host). Hence if your not uploading you get a slow speed. If you are using TheShadows Client (best in my opinion) there is a light on the top right. If this is stuck at yellow there are issues. If you have a firewall/router etc etc etc blocking ports you will need to forward the ports it uses (6881-6999) to your machine. Things should work alot better then ;D

What I haven't figured out with torrents is if there's a way to search for available files, or if there are libraries of stuff somewhere or what... I've used it before, with varying success, but only with the occasional posted link here & there.
#16.11 VikingStorm on 07 Dec 2003 - 15:07

Upload as fast as you can, and get files that has a lot of sources, like 500+ counting both seeds and downloaders. I always got 50 KB/sec when downloading via ADSL that way. That was how fast my ADSL connection allowed.

Now I'm sitting on a 10 Mbps connection and regularly get at least over 100 KB/sec.

Eh, then those leechers can't download either, since the dl speed depends on the ul speed. I know leechers are stupid, but I doubt they're *that* stupid.

search "kazaa lite" in google and at the bottom you get this:

It will take forever to rid the net of Kazaa Lite. I think the programs should release the source code to others and let the users start making the hacked versions. We could keep the updates posted to a message board about 'new' versions. I laugh in the face of Kazaa. KLite rules!

On http://www.slyck.com/news.php?story=339
Slyck.com the story says the the developers of Kazaa Lite helped Sharman out tremendously by disabling the supernode function. Very few users who run this client are acting as supernodes. A decentralized P2P network with all clients and no supernodes cannot exist.

So everybody on KazaaLite needs to enable supernode or KazaaLite will disappear... under Options, Kazaa Lite K++ Options, Advanced, uncheck 'Do not function as a Supernode.'

You're an idiot then. One day, maybe not today or tomorrow or six months from now, you will get burned from some kind of virus or trojan or bad **** and stay away from those warez sites. Bad internet browsing habits are the biggest reason you will have security problems, assuming you already have a firewall, AV, and regularly update Windows.
