Microsoft is prepping Windows XP Service Pack 2 to be released into beta testing within a week, sources said.

Service Pack 2, or SP2, expected to be delivered in finished form during the first half of 2004, is considered a significant Windows update because it offers enhanced security features and rolls up all the security patches and updates that have been released since the last service pack shipped in September 2002.

Sources familiar with the Service Pack 2 beta said the update offers Internet Connection Firewall (ICF) turned on by default, better patch detection and management features, changes in the way e-mail attachments are handled and support for the Security Configuration Wizard, planned for the first Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 due in the second half of next year, partners said.

Microsoft has, for instance, made it possible for users to configure and manage the firewall using the Group Policy features of Active Directory, so that, for instance, an administrator can turn on the ICF for laptops used remotely and turn it off when they used within the office, sources said.

That way, a company can have multiple configurations for different user scenarios and manage it from one location.

In addition, the update includes changes to the remote procedure call (RPC) to limit the amount of damage that can be done by a hacker. By narrowing the set of permissions and privileges to the user level, virus and worm writers would be restricted.

"By building AIM directly into Love.com, online daters will be able to communicate with a large, active community of people in real time, adding additional elements of interaction, emotion and personality to the world of online dating," it said.

The Love.com launch does not represent the company's first effort in the personals space, as it previously operated a service called Love@AOL, and currently uses listings from Match.com, with which it also shares revenue.

One source familiar with the project said online personals service Spring Street Networks will build the service's infrastructure while AIM collects profiles created by its users.

Representatives from AOL and Spring Street declined to comment on the partnership.

What?!? SP1 was a well tested, stable update for XP... SP2 will be the most comprehensive SP Microsoft have ever released.

And people will install and test it, if only to make sure that stupid arguments such as yours arn't worth the time taken to post a response.

bluebsh, your English wasn't much better....!!!

Installing betas of service packs is very stupid IMO, and I'd guess most people who spend all day working with computers would agree! The last thing I'd want when I got home was to be bug testing MS software for free. Each to their own though

I do not see what is wrong with it. My sentence was grammatically correct and was coherent.

Don't assume English is a everyones first language thats all

I think jumping on peoples spelling and grammar on neowin is getting really anal in general, I've had people have a go at me for saying 'your' instead of 'you're'. Seriously, if you think I care about details like that on a forum then you're mislead, I'm here for content not method of delivery.

This is an IT site. If you want to complain, then complain about technical inaccuracy not spelling and typos. You'll find a lot of crap advice goes unchecked because either no one knows better, or the people who do are too busy (or post on arstech-thingy more )

Bah, ye olde "type properly" argument. Typos are one thing, but if I were king of the world - and God willing, one day I will be - then effort toward capital letters, punctuation and paragraphs would recieve great reward.

At the same time however, those subjects found flaming each other will have punctuation surgically inserted into them... 'nuff said.

</minor Internet gripe>

You'd guess wrong then. I spend all day working on computers and one thing I know is that without people testing service packs (and other software), nowhere near the number of bugs would be found as are found with beta testers. Or were you simply referring to people outside the beta test installing the update? In that case, you have a point. People in general shouldn't install beta software (or .0 releases for that matter), but people that actually know the risks and are willing to take those risks in exchange for a better product have little reason not to.

The reason people instal betas is to test them. If people didn't test betas, there would be no point in betas - and all your software would be buggy as hell.

Does this clear things up for everyone?

Listen the more people that test it and bug report the more that gets fixed!!! what do u want? do u want buggy software? or do u want stability? I choose stability i'll be testing this service pack so that i can make sure it is stable and help out

Many feet can stamp on many bugs, one foot can stamp on but a few at a time. setup up a separte box and install the service pack on it or you could run two copies of WinXP side by side

I'm surprised no one has pointed out that MS should have put this in beta about six months ago for RTM by the end of the year...going close to two years between SP's, which is probably within a couple months of what this will turn out to be, is quite an oversight on MS's part.

The good news is that SP betas are usually quite boringly stable, so one could actually use it daily as a main install.

Dumb question here, but why do so many people get all fired up about FINALLY being able to get SP2? I mean, what, in particular, is so cool about getting a rollup of all the updates you've already been installing since who knows when? Always thought about that on any rollup updates. Always got them, but still wondered?

MS should be adding more features to XP with the Service Pack. Apple has added many improvements to OSX - although for a $$$$ - over the last 2 years. Apple at least has done some cool stuff with Panther.

MS still has XP around and nothing. Nada. Other than SP1 and DX and WMplayer updates. We have to wait for Longhorn. Or we could get the Plus pack which is pure crap.
Quote this comment #19.1 Posted by roadwarrior on 12 Dec 2003 - 17:28
Service packs are for bug fixes, not new features. Once in a while, new features have been added along with service packs, but that is the exception, not the rule. As for Apple, their 10.1, 10.2, and 10.3 releases are NOT equivalent to Microsoft's service packs, they are equivalent to the difference between Windows 2000 and XP. Apple's "service packs" are the intermediate releases, such as 10.2.8 and 10.3.1, which are in fact free updates.
