While there are hardly any widely available applications or content that require more than about 100 – 200GB of storage space, LaCie, a leading producer of innovative and breakthrough storage products, thinks there is a market for 1TB storage solutions nowadays. LaCie recently revealed its Bigger Disk storage solutions based on a number of HDDs with 7200rpm motors, 10ms seek time and 8MB cache buffers, delivering unbelievable 1TB of storage space in total. The external hard drive comes in stylish and compact 5.25” form-factor with FireWire 400, FireWire 800, USB 2.0 and power connectors. The Bigger Disk is easy to use, as it becomes fully-functional right after plugging to a computer.

The LaCie Bigger Disk features an on/off button, but also offers a unique automatic startup, shutdown and hibernation option to reduce excess noise and save energy. Ideal for audio users looking for a noise-free work environment, the Bigger Disk features an ultra quiet operating mode. Engineered out of aluminum and ZAMAC; this metal alloy dissipates heat from the drive and prolongs drive performance. The Bigger Disk is primarily designed as a cost-effective solution for digital video or other kinds of media storage. The solution may surely be used as a very big storage for a small workgroup. A peculiarity that restricts LaCie Bigger Disk from being deployed in mission-critical applications is the absence of RAID function, something that is crucially required by enterprises.

Main features of Advanced WMA Workshop:

- Handy User's Interface
Easy-to-use Explorer-like interface allows you easily navigate throug audio files on our computer and perform all actions just by one mouse click even for unproficient user.
- Batch Conversion Support
In case of mass conversion you can use inbuilt Batch Conversion engine to increase perfomance. You just need to add files you want to convert to Batch Queue and ress "Process tasks" button! You can easily change conversion settings(output format, it's settings, ID3 Tag information) of tasks in Batch Queue, after you add them.

- Best Audio Codecs Support
Our digital audio converter uses most modern and fast audio codecs, it internally supports WMA 9 format: WMA 9 with constant bitrate, quality based WMA 9 format with variable bitrate, two-pass bitrate based WMA 9 format with variable bitrate and WMA 9 Lossless format, which allows you to store your digital audio with best qualty. For MP3 encoding it uses fast LAME encoder 3.93, for OGG encoding it uses latest Vorbis SDK updates.
- ID3 Tag v2 Support
Program supports ID3 Tag v2, you can easily transfer all most useful tag fields from one format to another, edit these fields in audio files (multiple files tag edition is also supported).

wow
#4 ProfessorX on 14 Jan 2004 - 05:11
should be more than that

The problems with this is that if it breaks, you loose 1TB of data rather than 120GB of data or so

edit: This should be SATA or SCSI and having multiple disks in the one device would be a better solution

actually, the this device is firewire800, which by my rekoning is about 200mbps faster theoretical throughput than the current fastest SATA.
#5.3 danbalsh on 14 Jan 2004 - 10:39
Just be careful not to hook it up to MacOS 10.3 lol

Only j/k i'm a Mac user
#5.4 bluebsh on 14 Jan 2004 - 12:23
you mean the firewire problem mac has been haveing?
#5.5 tHeDoSe on 14 Jan 2004 - 19:52
there's a firmware issue

hmm, internal versions in a RAID array, mmmmmmmmmmm 2TB RAID 0

I agree with QuickReply.

Better to get, for example, four Maxtor Plus II or WDC Caviar 250GB SATA drives in a RAID 5 configuration on a RocketRAID 1640 4-Channel SATA RAID 5 Controller. This setup would cost $1000.00 or less at ZipZoomFly.

This kind of setup is not only much faster than a single 1 terrabyte external USB or Firewire drive, but your files are automatically protected. I believe DrOmango could get a satisfying amount of pornos on a 1 terrabyte RAID 5 setup without worrying about losing them.

[Edit]

After posting to this thread, I went to the website of a new SATA controller OEM, RAIDCore, to check on their progress in getting out their product which, according to Tom's Hardware, beats the pants off of everyone else's controllers. I came across this quote from one of their pages:

QUOTE
The RC4000 Series controllers coupled with high-capacity Maxtor MaXLine SATA drives feature the industry's best price/performance available today. Tested with eight 250GB MaXLine SATA drives totaling 2 terabytes (TB), the combination performed RAID 5 reads at 392 Mb/s, more than twice the speed of the nearest competitor RAID controller. With 16 MaXLine drives, the combination is capable of RAID 5 reads at 836 Mb/s and, in addition to this leadership performance, outstanding capacity expansion up to 32 drives is achievable with four 8-channel RC4852 controllers.

So there you go, DrOmango: you can now store up to 8 terrabytes of pornos and read them off the disks at nearly 1GB/second!

Let me add that for those of you who have a hard time wrapping your brain around the concept of 8 terrabytes, this is 8 million megabytes or roughly 65,536,000,000,000 bits of data or enough space to store approximately 1,600,000 high quality MP3s!

Try putting that in your iPod!

How many drives are in this thing. I'm sure its not 1 Drive.
#8.1 soloredd on 14 Jan 2004 - 09:11
It says it's based on a number of HDD drives with 7200rpm and 8mb buffer. This kind of spells doom to me, although I don't know the exact workings of a hard drive, I'm pretty sure having 10 100GB hard drives isn't as safe as having 1 1TB drive.

Can anybody answer that, by the way? Is having an extremely high number of platters better or worse in terms of functionality and future problems?

PC for the price of a Mac

There is a company named go-l.com that makes several changes/tweaks to the default install of windows and sells overclocked p4's with 2TB of disk storage.

Think 3.8GHz P4 EE, W 2MB l2 cache and 950MHz FSB
ATI Radeon™ 9800
4GB of RAM
Front Panel LCD Status Display
2 Terabyte @ 7200RPM/ 8MB Buffer (cooled)
802.11g

They probably make the fastest desktop system you can buy.

sells overclocked p4's

I thought intel would not allow any 3rd party manufacturer to sell systems where the CPU had been over clocaked. Against ther policy or seomthing because it has the possibility to shorten the life of the chip.
#10 Kashida on 14 Jan 2004 - 14:39
Yeah if go-l was fake why would maximum pc do a spread on them??
#11 grimreaper on 14 Jan 2004 - 15:44
wow u can store a lot of P0rn on a 1TB drive
#12 NeoSoft on 14 Jan 2004 - 16:02
#13 computerchan on 14 Jan 2004 - 16:53
other than as a backup device I don't think there's good use for this giant moster

(storing porns would be a waste)
#14 gliscameria on 14 Jan 2004 - 18:09
it's nice of them to be smart enough to inlcude it with all of those features! Of course what musician with $$$ for a 1200$ hard drive wouldn't have a seperate sound room to begin with....(speaking of the noise complaint)
#15 sandpaper on 14 Jan 2004 - 19:49
It would be a good thing for doing feature video editing. That eats up alot of space.
#16 Eldoen on 14 Jan 2004 - 23:18
probably be cheaper to do this with Rebyte

what the &*^$ is a TB, is that 1000 GBs? that's rediculous for consumer-use
#17.1 Yakuzing on 15 Jan 2004 - 15:11
lol with that price normal consumers is not going to buy it.

But if you are a w4r3z g0d you can easily take up 1 TB space, EASILY
