DVD software provider 321 Studios suffered another legal setback Wednesday when a New York judge granted a preliminary injunction barring the company from manufacturing, distributing, or otherwise trafficking in software that allows users to copy DVDs. U.S. District Judge Richard Owen, in case 1:03-cv-08970-RO, sided with Paramount Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox Film in ordering 321 Studios to stop distributing products that violate the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Motion Picture Association of America says in a statement praising the court decision.

Representatives from 321 Studios, Paramount Pictures, Twentieth Century Fox Film, and the U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York could not immediately be reached for comment Thursday. 321 Studios uses the freely available decryption technology DeCSS (De-Content Scrambling System) in its software, which allows users to access movies on DVDs that are protected by the CSS encryption technology.

so they've banned it from being sold with the deCSS - so what?

heaven forbid anyone from downloading it off kazaa, soulseek, winmx, bit torrent, dc++, mIRC etc etc...

what doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

They should just repackage their product without the deCSS and sell it like everyone else does..i.e. Roxio Media Creator, Nero Recode, Pinnacle's stuff, etc.

true... and perhaps make room for deCSS plugins..

Which is exactly what they have done. There is one major problem with 321's latest move though... they are terribly misleading their customers.

Roxia MC - clearly states it will not copy "protected" DVDs
Nero Recode - states the same thing
Pinnacle - states the same thing

321 on the other hand is still presnting their product the same as they always have (implying that it will copy any movie), and have not altered their decription about what it can and cant do like the many other programs do. Those other programs you mention also have more functionaltiy that just dvd-backup, while it is DVD X Copy's sole feature, so.... for the most part, it is a worthless program w/o deCSS, until they add more functionality.

While I personally never purchased dvdxcopy, I was a fan of 321 for fighting for our rights... but now, with their latest move, all I see is greed from a company that is duping their customers into thinking their program will do something it will not.

Who would want to DVD X Copy? DVD Shrink (www.dvdshrink.org) is a MUCH better program and it's free.
