Dear Windows Update V5 Beta testers:

We are rapidly closing in on the release of Windows Update Version 5 Release Candidate 1. Starting with Windows Update V5 RC1, testing will not be limited to Windows XP Service Pack 2. The finalized list of Windows operating systems for Windows Update V5 RC1 testing will be included in the announcement once RC1 testing begins.

The permanent URL for the Windows Update V5 RC1 website will be http://test.v5.windowsupdate.microsoft.com. This is a CHANGE from earlier when we reported that the URL would change again before Windows Update V5 RC1 became available for testing. To limit the inconvenience to our Beta testing community, the URL will NOT be changed for RC1.

All Windows XP SP2 Beta builds beginning with Windows XP SP2 Build 2082 through Windows XP SP2 RC1 will use this Windows Update URL. For Beta testers using other Windows operating systems, the URL will be modified by the setup process made available with the official release of Windows Update V5 RC1.

Thank you very much!
Windows Update Team

“The Tablet PC is now coming of age with new hardware on the market and an updated version of the operating system due this year,” said Paul Randle, Tablet PC product manager at Microsoft UK. “But to help customers get real value from the Tablet PC it’s essential that software applications reach the market. Microsoft is committed to working with ISVs to make sure this happens.”

The Tablet PC was launched worldwide in November 2002 with HP, Toshiba, Fujitsu-Siemens, Acer and RM launching models in the UK. Since then the market has grown with other PC manufacturers launching models, including new entrant to the EMEA marketplace, Motion Computing. In October 2003 Microsoft launched the Office System software range, which includes advanced support for the Tablet PC.

are they incorporating the update of all microsoft products in this version, or is it just limited to the Windows OS?

It includes more than just Windows, however exact content once it's finished hasn't totally been hashed out yet.
