I concur, that is the reason why I stopped using MSN Mesenger 6.1 and switched to Windows Messenger. I could care less with all the fancy emotions, display pictures, and crap. But for people who have a life. I think we can make some good use of our times instead of laughing our ass off at some funny emotion or display picture. And plus, IM programs are made to...IM?

I'd guess this is a new updated build for 5.0. The original Windows Messenger 5.0 was released sometime last August or ealier .

I also think it's silly microsoft keeps working on two IM applications: MSN Messenger and Windows Messenger. Why not just group the two development teams together and get ONE really good app (Microsoft Messenger .. hehe) that does it all. Seriously: the features on these two apps are allready -almost- the same.

can you see companys using MSN Messenger 6.x with all the games and stuff? NO!

So that's where Windows Messenger comes in, also Windows Messenger supports Exchange IM and SIP Servers
#7.2 ultimaweapon on 12 Mar 2004 - 14:03
Windows messenger is just so much nicer and less bumfy

My friend, if you like to screw around with MSN Messenger 6.1, then have fun. I don't see the point of that clunky playschool style interface when it's all about an IM program. Unless you're one of those people that don't have a life and add users that you find at match.com. Just leave Windows Messenger alone and go play for hours on end with MSN Messenger 6.1. Have fun wasting your time.

Seriously...Windows Messenger has a much cleaner interface.

The reason there are two Messenger clients has to do with driving users to MSN. A new computer user with Windows XP is more apt to use the included Windows Messenger before bothering to download another. Over time though, as the user notices that friends/contacts are using MSN Messenger -- noticing by the number of features that aren't compatible between the two applications -- the user will most likely decide to download and install the MSN client. Once a user is "hooked" on MSN Messenger, there is a greater likelihood that a subscription to MSN itself will be a choice said user might make.

Didn't you say this all before once?
#10.2 jesterzwild on 12 Mar 2004 - 13:57
Not that I recall, though it's entirely possible I have sometime, somewhere. However, I was providing an explanaition to a question from earlier in the comments.

Anyhow, what's your point? Not like anything said around here hasn't been said before.

OK, could someone help me out here please. What is the difference between the various versions of Messaging applications that MS supply?

I have Windows XP Pro, and I have Windows Messanger v4.7.3000. I've used MSN Messenger 6 in the past, but the two versions always seem to get into a fight over which one is going to work and be logged in.

If I install this version 5 will it overwrite v4.7, or will my desktop become a battlefield for two competing versions yet again? (I know I can uninstall the v4.7, but if this is supposed to be a true new version, shouldn't it just overwrite it?)

Also, any clues as to why this isn't offered as an update in Windows Update??? (I am on the WUv5 beta, so that might explain it maybe?)

Please help!?!?!?

When MSN and Windows Messengers get into their fights over who is going to work, I just end process the Windows Messenger, then go to c:program fileswindows messneger and rename msmsgs.exe to amsmsgs.exe so they won't fight over control. That is my work around and it works good for me.

** Note the directory and file names may be off since I am at work and we dont have messengers installed here.... My memory isnt the best.

Louis..
